Hello everyone. I'm Dr. Chia, a physician specializing in internal medicine and dermatology. Today I'd like to talk about immune function. With the spread of COVID-19, we constantly hear things like "boost your immunity to avoid infection" or "strengthen your immune system to prevent severe illness." I myself have been frequently interviewed about what people can do to improve their immunity. Online, you'll find countless immune-boosting foods, supplements, and even quasi-mystical remedies being promoted. From a medical perspective, I'd like to address the misconceptions and misunderstandings surrounding the concept of "immunity" that are widespread in our society, so please watch until the end.
First of all, did you know that the idea of "boosting" or "raising" your immunity is actually incorrect? Immunity is fundamentally a defense mechanism built into our bodies. When a virus enters the body, the immune system works to neutralize it. You might think, "the stronger, the better," but this is a significant misconception.
You've probably heard of hay fever (allergic rhinitis) and rheumatoid arthritis. These conditions are actually caused by an overactive immune system. Hay fever, for example, occurs when the immune system is so strong that it attacks harmless pollen, causing symptoms like itchy eyes. Rheumatoid arthritis occurs when the immune system goes haywire and attacks the body's own tissues — affecting the joints, causing finger deformities, or affecting the skin in conditions like scleroderma, where the skin becomes hardened. These are collectively known as autoimmune diseases — conditions caused by an overactive, runaway immune response.
Interestingly, this same immune overreaction is believed to play a role in severe COVID-19. Why do people die from COVID-19? Many assume it's simply because the pneumonia destroys the lungs, making it impossible to breathe. While that is part of the picture, it alone is rarely enough to cause death. In COVID-19, the virus triggers an immune response that generates fever and inflammation to eliminate the pathogen. However, when this inflammatory response becomes excessive — a condition known as a "cytokine storm" or "cytokine release syndrome" — it causes widespread inflammation throughout the body, beyond just the lungs, leading to multi-organ failure and death.
This is why, in addition to antivirals like favipiravir (Avigan), which suppress viral replication, another treatment under investigation is tocilizumab (Actemra), a biological agent that suppresses cytokines. Clinical trials are currently underway. This clearly illustrates that an immune system that is too strong is just as dangerous as one that is too weak. Balance is the key.
Generally speaking, products claiming to "boost immunity" are based on faulty premises. And while some may argue they are about "balancing" rather than "boosting" immunity, the truth is that no specific food or supplement has been proven to enhance immunity against a particular infectious disease.
So how do we maintain immune balance? The answer is remarkably simple: eat a balanced diet, exercise moderately, and get adequate sleep. That's it. Not very exciting, I know — and it won't sell products — but that is genuinely all there is to it.
In terms of diet, foods like natto (fermented soybeans), yogurt, and broccoli can all be part of a balanced diet. However, eating only one of these is counterproductive. For example, eating only vegetables in the name of immune health can lead to protein deficiency, impairing immune function. Conversely, eating only protein can lead to vitamin and fiber deficiencies, disrupting the gut environment — which plays a critical role in immune regulation. Variety and moderation are essential.
Body weight also matters. Being underweight weakens immunity, but so does being overweight. Obesity causes a state of chronic low-grade inflammation, which keeps the immune system perpetually occupied — leaving it less capable of responding effectively when a new pathogen arrives.
When it comes to exercise, "moderate" does not mean running 5 to 10 kilometers every day. Light daily activity such as a short walk — enough to improve circulation and mildly stimulate appetite — is sufficient. Intense workouts or long-distance running are not necessary.
Regarding sleep, I have a great deal of important information to share on this topic, so I will cover it in detail in the next video.
To summarize: immune function is about balance, not strength. Eating specific foods will not make your immune system stronger. The only method proven to enhance immunity against a specific disease is vaccination. For instance, if a COVID-19 vaccine becomes available, it would enhance immunity specifically against COVID-19 without causing the immune system to overreact. Some people may be skeptical of vaccines, but vaccination is truly the only scientifically validated way to build targeted immunity against a specific disease. Please make sure to get vaccinated.
Once again: no single food or supplement can normalize your immune function. Don't be misled by "immune-boosting" claims. Focus on a balanced diet, moderate exercise, and sufficient sleep. Don't waste money or let yourself be misguided by unsubstantiated information.
One final point: it is scientifically established that anxiety and stress can suppress immune function. Constantly consuming negative news and fear-inducing online content can disrupt your immune balance. Try to limit your exposure to such content and maintain a positive outlook.
Rather than thinking about "boosting" immunity, shift your mindset to "regulating" it. Looking for foods or supplements that help reduce inflammation in the body is a more accurate and productive approach to supporting immune balance.
This channel is dedicated to sharing accurate, evidence-based information about health and wellness. If you found this helpful, please consider subscribing. Keep smiling — it helps regulate your immune system too. See you in the next video. Thank you for watching.
