Hello everyone, I'm Arata Tomori, an internal medicine and dermatologist. Today I'd like to talk about affordable foaming face washes.
In my videos, I always talk about how you shouldn't rub your skin harshly during cleansing, right? So for cleansing too, I recommend applying cleansing oil to your face, adding water to emulsify it, and then washing it off—or using milk cleansers or balms in a way that involves gently pressing rather than scrubbing.
When skin experiences friction, it causes inflammation, which can lead to post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, and the irritation from friction can also worsen conditions like psoriasis. So friction is absolutely something to avoid.
A common question I get is, "So doctor, how should I wash my face?" Starting around two years ago, the no-friction trend finally arrived. Before that, I used to say, "Use a face-washing net to create fluffy lather before washing." But now, foaming cleansers that come out already as foam have appeared, allowing you to wash without friction using fluffy foam, without needing to lather it yourself with a net.
However, these foam cleansers used to cost around 2,000-3,000 yen. Recently, though, many affordable foam cleansers have come onto the market, often containing various beneficial ingredients. So I went to a drugstore and looked at various affordable options, and today I want to introduce three that I thought were really good. Please watch until the end.
The first one is this: Panna Pompa AHA Morning Face Soap. It has a cute panda logo that caught my eye, so I took a closer look. I'd like to draw attention to this one specifically for those with severe acne.
This foam cleanser has a non-comedogenic formula. Non-comedogenic formulas are designed for people prone to acne—meaning it doesn't contain ingredients that could cause breakouts. So if you currently have significant acne symptoms, I recommend choosing products labeled as non-comedogenic. For those with a lot of acne, popping pimples can be an issue, so I recommend foam cleansers in general, but this one being tested as non-comedogenic makes it even better.
On top of being non-comedogenic tested, it also contains AHA (a fruit acid), specifically glycolic acid, which has a peeling effect. Acne tends to form when the stratum corneum thickens, trapping sebum in the pores and preventing it from being released, leading to inflammation. So using a non-comedogenic formula that prevents the buildup of sebum that causes acne, combined with a peeling effect that thins the stratum corneum slightly, makes perfect sense.
Additionally, since it's a foam, as I mentioned earlier, you can wash gently even if you currently have acne, reducing the risk of popping pimples and causing dents or unevenness. So this product is one I'd recommend for those currently struggling significantly with acne, or those in the throes of puberty with oily, unstable skin that easily breaks out.
Next is this one: Tonyu (Soy Milk) Medicated Pure White Foam Cleanser. This soy isoflavone series includes products with retinol that I quite like, such as their eye cream, but I was really drawn to this foam cleanser too.
This one also says "prevents rough skin & acne," so you might think it's also for acne-prone skin, and indeed it is. I'd like people prone to acne or currently struggling with acne to pay attention to this one, but what's different from the previous product is that it contains dipotassium glycyrrhizinate, an anti-inflammatory ingredient. This helps not just with acne but also with skin irritation from things like wearing masks.
Another difference is that this one uses an amino acid-based cleansing agent, making it milder in cleansing power compared to the AHA foam cleanser from Panna Pompa. So rather than being for those in the peak of puberty with very oily, acne-covered skin, this is more suited for what you might call "adult acne"—those who occasionally experience dryness but also get acne from things like wearing masks during this season, with some areas being dry while also being prone to skin irritation beyond just acne. The anti-inflammatory glycyrrhizic acid combined with the mild amino acid-based cleanser washes gently, making this a noteworthy option in that sense.
Of course, since it comes out as foam, it's friction-free as well, so I'd recommend this cleanser to those dealing with adult acne or mask-related acne rather than teenage acne.
The third one is this: Sobarisu Facial Moisture. Some of you might notice this is just a refill pack. That's right—when I was looking around, I found that the original bottle was sold out everywhere. The other two products I tested were genuinely fluffy foam, but for this one, I could only get the refill since the original container wasn't available, so I can't confirm the foam's texture. But I'll set that aside because what drew my attention to this product was really its ingredients.
While the previous two were more geared toward acne, oily skin, or shine control, this one I'd recommend for those dealing with dryness, dullness caused by dryness, or rough skin texture due to dryness.
The cleansing agent here is also amino acid-based and gentle, similar to the soy isoflavone product mentioned earlier, but it additionally contains hyaluronic acid and ceramides. Of course, since it's a cleanser, these ingredients don't stay on your skin indefinitely, but their presence likely means more moisture is retained compared to a regular cleanser.
And on top of that, the refill was only about 300 yen!
As for who should use foam cleansers—well, of course, I'd like everyone to use them. But especially for those with acne, or those with rough or dry skin, scrubbing harshly causes friction, which further promotes dryness. So if you're someone who thinks, "I haven't found a good foam cleanser, but I do get dry skin," you can affordably try a foam cleanser that's also less likely to cause dryness.
Since I couldn't get the original bottle, I couldn't confirm the fluffiness of the foam, so I apologize for that, but trusting that it will indeed be fluffy, I introduced this one based solely on its ingredients.
When I went to a drugstore near my home, I found so many foam cleansers available. This makes me really happy because I've been saying for over 10 years now that there are three things you should absolutely avoid: friction, dryness, and sun damage. Seeing that drugstores now offer friction-free foam cleansers tailored to different skin types makes me genuinely delighted.
So I encourage everyone to avoid these three things—friction, dryness, and sun damage. Since friction applies to both cleansing and face washing, please be mindful of that. There are many foam cleansers out there now, so I hope you'll choose one that suits your skin type.
