Hello everyone. I'm Toshitoshi Yuri. Today I'd like to do a deep dive into Muji's new Brightening Series, which has received many requests from you all. I've noticed recently that Muji seems to be putting a lot of effort into skincare. Their Sensitive Skin Series from a while back also became quite popular, and with this new Brightening Series, I think they've really stepped up their game. Since it's been trending quite a bit on SNS, I went to a Muji store near me and found that only 4 of the items were in stock, with a beauty serum and gel cream sold out. The full line has 6 items total, but I only have 4 items on hand: toner, UV milk, sheet mask, and clay pack. So I'll focus on these 4 today.
First, let me explain the key active ingredient across the entire series: L-Ascorbic Acid 2-Glucoside, a water-soluble vitamin C derivative, serves as the base. This is considered very gentle on the skin among vitamin C derivatives, and is often used by skincare manufacturers specializing in sensitive skin products. So while the whitening effect isn't particularly strong, if you find that vitamin C causes irritation, this is actually a great option for you.
As a supporting ingredient, they've included Chamomile Extract. When you hear "Chamomile Extract," you might think of Kamylla ET, which is used as an official whitening ingredient by certain brands. However, Chamomile Extract and Chamomile ET are quite different. Chamomile ET is a refined extract that reduces inflammation and prevents melasma formation. Chamomile Extract can be expected to have similar anti-inflammatory properties, so by combining these two, it creates a gradual brightening effect. Ceramides are properly included in every product, so the moisturizing effect should be quite high while brightening. Overall, it seems to be designed with sensitive skin in mind.
Let's start by looking at the toner. As I mentioned, the active ingredient is Vitamin C 2-Glucoside. The base ingredients are water and glycerin, giving it a slightly thick texture when applied to the skin. It's not sticky, but it does feel smooth. However, it's not overly slippery. I thought the glycerin content might be stronger. There's a slight film-forming sensation, but without much greasiness. Since glycerin is the primary base providing moisture, combined with ceramides and amino acids, it enhances the skin's barrier function. However, a slight stickiness does appear after some time, so personal preference may vary.
Next is the Brightening UV Milk. What's interesting is that even as a milk, it contains SPF 41 and PA+++ sunscreen. The active ingredients remain Vitamin C derivative, ceramides, and amino acids, but it also contains glycerin as a primary ingredient and squalane and lighter oils as supplementary ingredients. It feels like a creamy milk, though I thought it might be heavier. When spread, it's surprisingly light. While some people find glycerin darkens pores, squalane is an oil that resists oxidation and is less likely to cause breakouts, making it great for those who want lightweight moisturization without heaviness.
What's interesting is that this is non-chemical sunscreen. It contains only titanium dioxide without chemical UV absorbers, yet achieves SPF 41 and PA+++, which is impressive. However, there's a catch. Since it's a milk, you spread it all over, and while it's high quality as a milk, it's not a standalone sunscreen solution. Non-chemical sunscreens have the advantage of maintaining their scattering power over time. I think it's better to combine chemical and physical filters, so the ideal approach is to apply this as part of your skincare routine, then layer a proper sunscreen with both chemical and physical filters on top. So while it's excellent as a skincare milk, I wouldn't recommend relying on it alone for complete sun protection.
Also, I don't have it on hand right now, but there's also a beauty serum. It contains Vitamin C derivative and Chamomile Extract, which should further enhance brightness. What's interesting is that it focuses heavily on absorption, so serums typically contain alcohol to help penetration. However, this is alcohol-free, making it even better for sensitive skin. The Vitamin C derivative itself is designed to be safe for sensitive skin.
Truthfully, the toner and milk alone provide quite substantial moisture. So the gel likely contains Vitamin C derivative and ceramides, providing oil while maintaining a gel texture for those wanting a lighter feel. For lighter use, I'd suggest: toner, serum, gel mask. For more hydration, I'd suggest: toner, serum, then milk.
What I particularly liked was this: the clay pack. It contains Vitamin C derivative and targets pores. It's actually rare to find a clay pack with these qualities. It contains kaolin, a clay extract that gently absorbs pore impurities. Combined with Vitamin C derivative, Chamomile Extract, and multiple amino acids—alanine, arginine, glycine, sodium glutamate, serine, and proline—it provides both pore care and active ingredients. For those concerned about pores but preferring gentle rather than aggressive treatment, this is perfect.
There's also a sheet mask containing Vitamin C derivative and amino acids. However, sheet masks can compromise barrier function with frequent use in sensitive skin. While normal skin types can use them daily, sensitive skin can suffer from prolonged moisture exposure. If you want a mask but need something gentler, clay packs are better. Since this brightens and targets pores, I think it's the best option in the series. It absorbs sebum well, and after rinsing, skin feels soft while pores are thoroughly cleaned—a very satisfying product.
If asked what to buy first or what I'd recommend most, I'd say this series is excellent. For those with sensitive skin who experience irritation from vitamin C but worry about not addressing skin concerns, the gentle vitamin C here is reassuring. With good moisturizing properties, it's suitable for dry skin types. Depending on combinations, it could work for oily male skin or men starting skincare routines. I think Muji really delivered here.
So, that concludes my deep dive into Muji's Brightening Series, which you've all requested. I think these are excellent products. Next time I visit, I want to purchase the items that were sold out—the serum and gel mask—to review their textures and properties. Thank you all for watching to the end today! If you enjoyed this video, please give it a thumbs up and subscribe to the channel. I'll see you in the next video. Thank you for watching!
