Hello everyone, I'm Arata Tomori Yuri. How do you choose your skincare products? Recently, ingredient analysis has become popular on YouTube and SNS. While I'm involved in this too, I often see posts like "this product has these beneficial ingredients" or "this popular product has no good ingredients" on social media. I'm sure many of you are choosing skincare based on this content, but there might actually be a big pitfall. So today, I want to explain why choosing skincare based solely on ingredient analysis is problematic. If you're currently selecting skincare products based on ingredient analysis, please watch until the end. Let me get right to it. The main issue with ingredient analysis is that when analyzing ingredients, people always look at the full ingredient list. There are cosmetics and quasi-drugs, and with quasi-drugs, information about what beneficial ingredients they contain is written at the very beginning. For example, for whitening products, you'll see beneficial ingredients like tranexamic acid, vitamin C derivatives, or chamomile extract. For anti-inflammatory products, you'll find ingredients like dipotassium glycyrrhizinate or panthenol. People think, "If these effective ingredients are listed, it must be safe," or even with regular cosmetics that aren't quasi-drugs, when they see niacinamide listed early, they think, "This product must have niacinamide's benefits." However, there are actually ingredients that can't be understood just from reading these lists. To understand this properly, we need to look at how cosmetics are actually made. Roughly speaking, there are two patterns: cosmetic companies developing their own unique ingredients through proprietary technology, or OEM companies that gather existing raw materials and manufacture products together with their partners. Neither is inherently better than the other - both can produce excellent products. However, cosmetics that are easier to analyze by ingredients are often those made through the OEM route. This is because OEM companies typically use existing, well-known ingredients like vitamin C, niacinamide, collagen, or hyaluronic acid - ingredients that are easy for consumers to understand. OEM companies have their own developed ingredients too, but they tend to include many ingredients that are familiar and understandable to the general public. This information is widely available in the market. For example, if I, Arata Tomori Yuri, wanted to create a serious brightening toner, here's what happens: I'd contact various OEM companies and explain my concept, what kind of product I want, and which ingredients I'd like included. They'd then say, "Let's include these and these ingredients." In that case, the ingredients tend to be quite recognizable. So with such cosmetics, ingredient analysis is easy. However, when a cosmetic company develops their own products, holds their own patents, and uses proprietary ingredients, the detailed information about those unique ingredients often doesn't come out unless you specifically investigate the company itself. It's quite tricky because ingredients can have the same name but completely different manufacturing processes and efficacy. For example, even if two people are both named Arata Tomori Yuri - whether it's Arata Tomori Yuri Nitta or Arata Tomori Yuri Nami - they're completely different people. Similarly, the same "hyaluronic acid" or "collagen" in different products can be very different in how they're made and their actual benefits. It's scary, isn't it? So by just looking at ingredient names, you can't discover a cosmetic product's true potential. I've brought two representative examples today. First is Fancl's Toiro series that launched in April - specifically the Vitalizing Drop. It contains niacinamide and dipotassium glycyrrhizinate as active ingredients. Some people say, "Niacinamide and dipotassium glycyrrhizinate are in drugstore products too, so this can't be that special." But besides those ingredients, there's actually something else - a component you absolutely won't find in other products. That's "Hydrolyzed Collagen Liquid 4." Hydrolyzed collagen is just collagen that's been broken down into smaller pieces, right? It's in lots of products, so people might think it's not special. But I'd say those people should apologize to Fancl. Why? Because if you look at my earlier video about "Does Collagen Really Matter?", Fancl has been researching collagen extensively for a long time. They've been explaining that collagen is essential for our bodies. Through their academic presentations and research, they've been modifying collagen quality and improving collagen absorption. Among collagen types, hydrolyzed collagen makes collagen more absorbable by the skin because molecular weight needs to be small. That's why it's called "hydrolyzed" - it's broken down into smaller pieces. But there are actually hundreds of types of hydrolyzed collagen, and they work very differently depending on their type. Fancl holds a patent specifically for this. Amino acids have what's called an amino acid sequence - they're arranged with glycine, guanine, and other sequences. Depending on where you cut the amino acid chain to create hydrolyzed collagen, absorption in the skin and body is completely different. This has been discovered through research. So Fancl analyzed how to maximize absorption and found that if you cut at specific points where glycine is located to create tripeptides, it's more absorbable. But here's the interesting part - it doesn't work if it's all glycine tripeptides. They discovered that including a specific ratio improves skin absorption, so they use this hydrolyzed collagen liquid. It's not just generic hydrolyzed collagen - they've specifically modified the quality. When you ask what "quality" means in this context, as we age and get exposed to UV rays, collagen becomes stiff and breaks down easily, which is why our skin loses firmness. So Fancl uses hydrolyzed collagen that's specifically designed to restore collagen quality - making stiff, damaged collagen soft and elastic again. They cut the collagen at the glycine point to create tripeptides, research the right ratio, and include it based on that science. Without knowing this, you'd think, "Oh, it's just niacinamide, dipotassium glycyrrhizinate, and random collagen - so it's like regular drugstore products." But that's not the case. By including this specialized hydrolyzed collagen from their unique collagen research, they can transform the quality of stiff collagen into soft, elastic collagen, creating that bouncy, firm appearance. You'd never discover this without digging deeper than just looking at ingredients, right? There's another example: DEW's Tan Tan Conc Drop. Some people really criticize this product, and when I see that, I think, "I'm sorry, Yoshida." Why? Because DEW is made by Shiseido, which has been extensively researching hyaluronic acid. The person leading this hyaluronic acid research is researcher Yoshida - someone I consider almost a god of hyaluronic acid research. Hyaluronic acid exists in both the epidermis and dermis, and for a long time, we didn't understand how it's generated or how it breaks down. But Yoshida's research group discovered exactly how it's generated and how it breaks down. Once they understood this, they could figure out how to increase it and how to prevent its breakdown - knowledge they incorporated into DEW's unique formula. But if you just look at it on the surface, you might think, "Oh, it just has hyaluronic acid and other ingredients - it's meaningless." If you don't know about Yoshida's research, you might indeed think that. So what exactly is involved? Yoshida's group discovered that NAG - a natural substance - is necessary to promote hyaluronic acid production in the epidermis. For dermal synthesis, they found that Aquacerin 120 is needed, and to inhibit hyaluronic acid breakdown in the dermis, they discovered that caramus grass extract is necessary. Actually, we still don't fully understand how epidermal breakdown works - that research is ongoing. But we currently understand how to promote epidermal production, and in the dermis, we understand both synthesis promotion and breakdown inhibition. So the product contains natural NAG, Aquacerin 120, and caramus grass extract. In the full ingredient list, natural NAG is listed as N-acetylglucosamine, which promotes dermal synthesis. Caramus grass extract appears as such in the ingredients. As for Aquacerin 120, it's actually a complex of methyl serine, N-acetylglucosamine, and glycerin. When you look at each ingredient individually, none of them seem remarkable. But by combining these three using their proprietary technology in their unique formula, they create Aquacerin 120, which promotes dermal synthesis. Without understanding this, you'd think it's just a regular cream. That's why, as I've been saying, if you only look at ingredients, you'll absolutely never discover the true nature of these products. Looking at Fancl's Toiro, they change collagen quality - since collagen is the foundation of dermal firmness, this creates that bouncy texture. With DEW, they promote hyaluronic acid production in the epidermis and dermis while preventing dermal hyaluronic acid breakdown, resulting in plump, hydrated skin. If you don't understand this, you'll never really get it. Of course, analyzing ingredients and choosing products with recognized beneficial ingredients is important. But cosmetics aren't just about ingredients - the proprietary technology, unique formulation methods, and how these affect your skin are also crucial. Since these factors can't be determined just from looking at ingredients, I'd caution against selecting products based solely on ingredient analysis. Incidentally, research data about these ingredients isn't revealed in the product description because of various business reasons. You'll usually find this information on company press releases or research presentation pages. If you're interested, try visiting the company's press release section or research pages - you might discover what's really in these products. I try to explain not just ingredients but also manufacturing methods and proprietary technology on my channel, so please subscribe. So what did you think? I got pretty passionate today! But cosmetics really aren't just about ingredients - the research and development hidden behind the scenes are what truly matter. I hope you'll check into these aspects.
