I've been introducing lots of 2023 whitening skincare products, but today I want to introduce three of the latest whitening cosmetics you can buy at drugstores. Please watch until the end. Many of you probably want to start solid whitening care from this time of year, but it's not always easy to find time to go shopping. That's when drugstore cosmetics really come in handy. The products I'm introducing today are all excellent, featuring the latest research findings and solid penetration technology. **Product 1: Transino Medicated Melano Signal Essence** Many of you have probably seen Transino before, but it was actually renewed and upgraded in 2023. Transino's main ingredient is tranexamic acid, and it's a skincare brand made by Daiichi Sankyo Healthcare, a pharmaceutical company. This company actually developed tranexamic acid as a pharmaceutical drug for treating melasma, so they could be considered pioneers in tranexamic acid research. Transino also sells an oral medication for melasma treatment available at drugstores, as well as pharmaceutical products for spot treatment containing vitamin C and L-cysteine. It's a brand that addresses spots from both the inside and outside. This renewed essence, of course, still contains tranexamic acid. What's different from the previous version is that, having thoroughly researched tranexamic acid, they've made improvements to enhance its effectiveness, and they've also addressed causes of spots beyond just UV exposure. First, regarding penetration technology: tranexamic acid is a water-soluble ingredient, so when applied directly to skin, it has difficulty penetrating the stratum corneum due to obstacles like sebum. To solve this, they incorporated a special oil that dissolves in both water and oil—cyclohexanedicarboxylic acid bis-ethoxydiglycol. This ingredient dissolves both water-soluble and oil-soluble components, promoting penetration into the stratum corneum. Additionally, they've adopted technology to encapsulate tranexamic acid in nanocapsules. While it was previously capsulated, this nano-sizing has increased penetration by 1.3 times. This works because the tranexamic acid is contained within multi-layered liposomes, allowing it to gradually penetrate through the various layers of skin. This combination of special oil and liposome technology to enhance tranexamic acid's penetration is the first key point. Tranexamic acid works to block UV-induced inflammation and prevent skin irritation, but that's not all. Have you ever heard that stress can cause spots? This has been vaguely known, but Daiichi Sankyo Healthcare has actually researched and published this mechanism in academic papers. According to a 2019 dermatology journal article, when UV light hits the skin, it triggers a command to produce melanin, activating tyrosinase (a melanin precursor), which leads to spot formation. A substance called α-MSH promotes this tyrosinase activation, and it was discovered that α-MSH levels increase when stress increases. Various stresses from work, family, and daily life can increase α-MSH, which causes spots. So beyond just suppressing UV-induced inflammation, they needed to address stress-related spot causes too. That's why they added Kurara extract (Phellodendron amurense extract), which is known to suppress α-MSH. By combining tranexamic acid to boost whitening function while suppressing UV-induced inflammation, along with Kurara extract to address stress-related spot causes, this product approaches the problem from both internal and external angles. As for texture, it's like this: while it's an essence, it has a somewhat cream-like consistency. However, once applied, it absorbs smoothly with absolutely no stickiness. It seems suitable even for oily skin types, but interestingly, it also carries a tested claim that it "reduces the visibility of fine lines caused by dryness." Despite its smooth, non-sticky texture, it also provides solid moisturizing benefits. This makes it an excellent item that can simultaneously address dry fine lines around areas like the under-eyes (where spots are often a concern) while also preventing spots. **Product 2: Elixir Brightening Emulsion & Brightening Lotion** Next, let me introduce Elixir's Brightening Emulsion and Brightening Lotion. Elixir underwent a major renewal 3-4 months ago, incorporating Shiseido's latest research to achieve firmness improvement—I covered this in a previous video, so some of you may remember. Now, a whitening version has been added to this lineup. For detailed renewal information, please check my previous deep-dive video, but to summarize: Shiseido focused on the immune system, particularly the balance of macrophages. When this balance is disrupted, inflammation increases, leading to decreased collagen and elastin. Additionally, collagen constantly undergoes breakdown and regeneration, but when regenerated under inflammatory conditions, the resulting collagen quality isn't very good. To address this and ensure high-quality collagen production, they included the firming/moisturizing ingredient "M-Bouncer CP," composed of Sapindus mukorossi peel extract and glycerin. Another issue is that as we age, the stratum corneum thickens, making it harder for beneficial ingredients to penetrate. I mentioned this in relation to the soles of feet—when ubiquinone increases, the stratum corneum thickens and blocks penetration. To counter this, they included "Deep Moist EX,” made from melilot extract and glycerin, which helps suppress ubiquinone's effects. This technology for properly delivering collagen-boosting ingredients through the skin was a highlight of the renewal. This time, they've added Shiseido's signature whitening active ingredient, 4MSK. Beyond suppressing tyrosinase activity to prevent melanin formation, 4MSK also has a mild exfoliating effect on the stratum corneum, promoting skin turnover and encouraging melanin excretion. In other words, it's a Shiseido-style whitening active ingredient that addresses both melanin prevention and its removal. Furthermore, since skin inflammation from irritation can also compromise transparency, they've included dipotassium glycyrrhizate, an anti-inflammatory ingredient. This series was originally designed with "tsuyadama" (glowing, dewy skin) in mind—by refining skin texture in the stratum corneum and ensuring adequate moisture, light passes through more easily. In the epidermis, 4MSK suppresses melanin levels, allowing light to reach deeper. In the dermis, high-quality collagen ensures light reflects beautifully. By combining ingredients that address the stratum corneum, epidermis, and dermis respectively, this Brightening Lotion and Emulsion achieve that glowing, dewy transparency by utilizing how light enters and reflects within the skin. As I mentioned during the renewal, while the ingredients themselves remain unchanged, they've also introduced texture options ranging from light to rich. Elixir really is an impressive brand. And despite this, the price isn't too high, and with just a simple two-step lotion-and-emulsion routine, it's perfect for those who want to start whitening care but aren't sure where to begin, or who find using essences a bit of a hassle. Of course, it's available at drugstores too, making it excellent on that front as well. So, how did you find today's video? I introduced renewed versions of both Transino and Elixir.
