Hello everyone! This is Arata Tomori. Today, Nobori-kun wants to know about pores. As is often mentioned in the comments too, both men and women wonder which facial wash is ultimately best for pore care, so I wanted to cover that topic. So honestly, which is better - the sebaceous plug breakdown type or enzyme cleansing that you often introduce, sensei? Good question. The sebaceous plug breakdown technology refers to a cleansing ingredient called Tris that Kao owns, which dissolves sebaceous plugs from the inside. For example, the famous Biore product has "sebaceous plug breakdown technology" written on it, and Est also has products with this. This one is a gel cleanser - there's foam type and gel type, and also things like the black-packaged Sofina iP product for pore-specific care - these all work by breaking down and dissolving plugs from the inside. The other one Nobori-kun mentioned is enzyme cleansing. The most famous one is probably Suisai, and there's also one I introduced before called "Otona no," and there's a regular version too. Products like Obagi's vitamin and enzyme cleanser also fall into this enzyme cleansing category. These two approaches seem to be the main ones targeting pores and sebaceous plugs among cleansers, so today I want to explain which type of person should use enzyme cleansing versus sebaceous plug breakdown type. First, what exactly is a sebaceous plug? It's what forms when sebum and protein tangle together inside the pore. What's the protein? It's actually our skin cells. Our skin cells undergo something called turnover - as they mature, they gradually move upward, and eventually become the stratum corneum and flake off as dead skin. The sebaceous plug forms when these keratin cells mix with sebum. This tends to layer up like a mille-feuille and harden, which is why it's difficult to remove with normal cleansing. It's said to be common around the nose, between the eyebrows, and on the chin. So you know how you clean out sebaceous plugs thoroughly - how long do you think it takes before they form again? For sebaceous plugs? One day. Even if you remove them completely, it's said that about 80% return within 24 hours. Especially people with excess sebum really need to take proper care of their sebaceous plugs. What happens when plugs get clogged is the most dreaded thing - acne. Also blackheads/pore darkening. So caring for and thoroughly removing them is the most necessary thing. So now, which of these two is better? The sebaceous plug breakdown technology contains an ingredient called Tris, but the actual ingredient is tromethamine. Tromethamine was originally a pH adjuster used to change the pH of cosmetics - it wasn't really thought of as something that would target sebaceous plugs. But when a researcher tried adding it, the plugs dissolved, and now Kao uses it as their sebaceous plug breakdown technology. As I mentioned, a sebaceous plug has protein and hardened sebum forming layers, so there's a kind of protein wall. Tromethamine loosens this protein wall, and then dissolves the sebum afterward. As the sebum melts away, it dissolves from the inside in a soft, fluffy way. That's why it's called "plug breakdown" technology. Since it only targets the plug itself, if you want to clean out the inside of the pore specifically, this is a great point to focus on. Now, what is enzyme cleansing? Generally it contains either protease, lipase, or both. Actually, I brought one that contains both protease and lipase - both Suisai and Obagi have this. Protease is an enzyme that breaks down protein, and lipase is an enzyme that breaks down sebum. Think of "breaking down" as scraping away from the surface. Since protease targets protein, it removes the dead skin cells sitting on the surface, and the foam penetrates deep into the pore to dissolve the protein at the upper part of the plug. Lipase, on the other hand, dissolves the sebum on the skin's surface as well as the sebum at the upper part of the plug. So while plug breakdown technology dissolves things from the inside with a fizzy effect, enzyme cleansing is more like scraping away from the top, cleaning up built-up sebum and thickened stratum corneum. Since it helps prevent clogging and also cares for the keratin on the skin's surface, I think enzyme cleansing is overwhelmingly better for people who experience roughness or are prone to acne. However, there are various types of enzymes. Do you know why enzymes come in powder form? Because once dissolved in water, they activate immediately, so if you don't apply them to your skin right away, their effectiveness weakens. So it's kept in powder form almost like it's sleeping. That's why you need to mix it with water, work up a lather, and apply it to your skin the moment you've foamed it - otherwise the enzyme's activity drops and it won't work properly. Suisai is probably the most famous one, and Suisai is a brand by Kanebo. Do you know what Kanebo used to make in the past? Kanebo... I think of textiles/fibers. That's right, a textile company! Their technology for silk-coating powder is extremely advanced. So they silk-coat each individual enzyme powder particle. Because of this coating, it doesn't easily react with water and doesn't activate prematurely. On the outside of this silk coating, they attach various other ingredients - like charcoal, hyaluronic acid, and moisturizing components. I don't think Obagi does silk coating, but they also prevent premature activation somehow, and Obagi's formula is vitamin C-based. Both are wonderful products, so it really comes down to which one you'd prefer to use. So to summarize: both are good for activating/cleaning, but if you're more prone to acne or concerned about rough skin texture, enzyme cleansing is definitely better. Also, if you don't necessarily get acne but have specific concerns like blackheads only around your nose, or little white bumps, plug breakdown technology is overwhelmingly better. If you're concerned about adult pore issues, I'd recommend gel cleansers using plug breakdown technology over enzyme cleansing. Both are good for pores, but it's better to use them according to your needs. If you have excess sebum, are prone to acne, have rough texture, and oily shine, go with enzyme cleansing. If you're also concerned about oil but have specific issues like localized blackheads or dullness around the pores, plug breakdown technology would be better. I hope you'll think about which applies to you and take care of your pores accordingly. So, did that answer your question? Yes, that answered it. Thank you. Pores really are an eternal struggle, aren't they? That's true. In the end, it comes down to daily habits, doesn't it? Exactly. For sebaceous plugs, washing with enzyme cleansers, using peeling-type products that soften the keratin, and using plug breakdown technology to remove ones that have already formed - all of these approaches are important. But you don't need to obsess over completely removing them; making them less noticeable is enough. Cleaning up the keratin, and also moisturizing to add water content to balance out sebum production - moisturizing is also very important. I hope you'll use these methods in combination. Today we covered the topic of pores. If there's anything else you're curious about, please write in the comments and I'll explain it in more detail. So please leave your comments! Thank you very much for watching today. Thank you very much.
