Hello everyone, this is Arata Tomori.
The hot days keep continuing, don't they? It feels like your pores are still open, so you probably want to do some pore care. When it comes to pore care, peeling comes to mind. But there are so many types of peeling products that many of you are probably wondering what kind of peeling suits you best. Some may worry that overdoing it could lead to "cellophane skin," or wonder which one works best for pores. Since I think many of you have these kinds of concerns, today I want to dive deep into representative peeling ingredients and which type of peeling suits which kind of skin concern. So if you want to do pore care, or if you want to try peeling but don't know which one is right for you, please watch until the end.
The stratum corneum is made up of dead cells piled up at the very top of the epidermis. It normally turns over and sheds in about a 28-day cycle. However, when the stratum corneum doesn't shed properly due to UV exposure, dryness, inflammation from excess sebum, and various other factors, it becomes thicker. When that happens, people with excess sebum are more prone to acne, while others may experience dryness due to lack of moisture, or the skin may look rough and uneven. Peeling refers to the process of evenly thinning out this thickened stratum corneum.
The word "peeling" might sound scary because it implies "stripping off," but if the stratum corneum builds up too thick, the skin's ability to generate new cells declines. On the other hand, if it becomes too thin, it can lead to "cellophane skin." Since the stratum corneum is essential for the skin's barrier function, if that barrier weakens, various substances can penetrate and cause irritation. But if it's too thick, it can lead to clogged pores, acne, and rough texture. So neither too thick nor too thin — using a peeling product suited to your skin type to keep the stratum corneum evenly aligned is the key to beautiful skin.
By the way, summer is a season when the stratum corneum tends to thicken. As I mentioned, the stratum corneum plays a key role in barrier function — and that barrier isn't just against things like viruses, but also against UV rays. In the past, there weren't sunscreens like we have now, so the skin would naturally thicken the stratum corneum in summer as a form of protection. This year being especially hot, excess sebum is produced, leading to inflammation from that sebum. Also, exposure to air conditioning causes dryness, which in turn triggers inflammation and thickens the stratum corneum. For these reasons, the stratum corneum tends to thicken in various ways during summer, so doing some peeling is a good idea. Just be careful not to overdo it, and make sure to use an item suited to your skin type.
As for how to choose the right one, please select based on your own skin type.
For people with oily skin or those concerned about pores, I definitely recommend doing peeling. The stratum corneum exists not just on the surface but also inside the pores. Since pores are essentially small indentations in the skin, if the entrance area's stratum corneum thickens, sebum trying to come out gets blocked, narrowing the opening. This causes sebum to accumulate, forming clogged plugs that can oxidize and turn dark — which is why peeling is essential for these skin types.
For those with oily, shiny skin, the best peeling ingredient is salicylic acid. You may not be familiar with the term, but peeling ingredients generally fall into two types: AHA, mainly composed of fruit acids like glycolic acid, and BHA, mainly composed of salicylic acid. Salicylic acid, a type of BHA, is oil-soluble, meaning it can penetrate into the pores where sebum is present. This allows it to care for the skin's texture even deep within the pores, and it can penetrate the skin's surface effectively even when there's a lot of sebum. If you're troubled by blackheads, acne, or oily shine, look for products containing salicylic acid.
A representative product is the La Roche-Posay Peel Care Serum. It contains salicylic acid, which is great for those with oily, shiny skin, along with niacinamide and thermal water — a unique La Roche-Posay ingredient known for calming inflammation. Niacinamide itself helps control sebum production. So if you have acne or are concerned about pores, you should choose a product containing salicylic acid, ideally combined with something that also soothes inflammation. If you have excess sebum, acne-prone skin, or pore concerns, please try using peeling care items that contain salicylic acid.
On the other hand, for those who don't necessarily have oily skin but want to promote skin turnover and do some anti-aging care, glycolic acid is recommended. Glycolic acid has a smaller molecular size than salicylic acid, allowing it to penetrate deeper into the skin and more effectively promote turnover. For example, if you want smoother skin or refined texture, like with peeling soaps, glycolic acid has the advantage because it penetrates deeper and stimulates turnover more actively.
While glycolic acid works well for oily skin types, for sensitive skin, salicylic acid is better since its larger molecular size limits penetration. It might seem contradictory that both sensitive and oily skin types benefit from salicylic acid, but that's the case. If you have normal skin, aren't particularly sensitive, and want to refine your texture or add firmness, glycolic acid would be a better choice.
Besides these, there are other items recently gaining attention for their peeling-like effects. One that many of you are probably curious about is Takami's Peel Care Essence. It seems to be their 20th anniversary, with a limited-edition package currently available. I often get asked what's so good about Takami's Skin Peel. Unfortunately, it isn't actually a peeling product. Despite having "peel" in its name, it doesn't contain any typical peeling agents like glycolic or salicylic acid. So why has it gained such popularity? It's actually a blend of seven fruit acids — though technically, few of these actually exfoliate the stratum corneum.
Honestly, just looking at the ingredients, it's hard to tell what makes it effective. But Takami was acquired by the L'Oréal Group, and when L'Oréal's research team studied it thoroughly, they found that this seven-acid blend increases involucrin — a protein that strengthens cell membranes — thereby reinforcing the skin's stratum corneum. So rather than "peeling off" the stratum corneum, it seems to work by reshaping and flattening the cells to create smoother skin. Of course, L'Oréal is still continuing research on this, so there's likely much more to discover. Still, for those who already use it, I'd recommend thinking of it not as a peeling product but as something that refines each stratum corneum cell individually. It might not be ideal for very oily skin, but for those with acne-prone skin who want gentle exfoliation, especially if their skin is naturally thin with uneven texture and prone to stinging from regular peeling products, this could be a great option.
Another highly notable item this season is Sofina iP's Water Glow Peeling Foam Serum. This one contains neither salicylic acid nor glycolic acid, and it doesn't work by reshaping cells either — it's an actual peeling product. The key is that it uses a high concentration of carbonation. Not just any carbonation, but a high concentration that, when it penetrates the skin, shifts the pH toward a more acidic state. Normally, as the stratum corneum thickens, an enzyme responsible for breaking down cell adhesion works to naturally shed the old cells — but as we age, this enzyme's activity decreases. However, with high-concentration carbonation, this enzyme becomes active again, essentially restoring the skin's natural function. Interestingly, unlike other peeling agents that can thin the skin with continued use, this doesn't remove more than necessary — even if the enzyme becomes active, it only breaks down the stratum corneum that's actually ready to shed. So there's no risk of thinning your skin from overuse. It's great for dry, normal, and acne-prone skin alike, and since it also stimulates fibroblasts, it offers anti-aging benefits too — making it a truly versatile skincare item.
So today, I've organized some trending peeling-effective products by skin type and specific concerns. The key point with peeling is not to overdo it — using the right peeling product suited to your skin type, in moderation, is what matters most. I hope this helps you find what's right for you.
