Hello everyone, this is Arata Tomori. Today, I want to take a deep dive into Kanebo's new lotion, which is set to be released on January 16th, and I'm already looking forward to it. It was announced last year, but there was quite a buzz on social media, with many people saying "please do a deep dive on this," so I wanted to explore it a bit more. To put it simply, what makes this so amazing is that the incredibly popular vernix cream has been turned into a lotion. That alone is impressive, but there's actually an even deeper level of amazingness to it. Today's video is for anyone wondering what kind of lotion will be released this spring, or anyone who wants to feel moisture from the depths of their skin. When you think of Kanebo, the hugely popular vernix cream (Cream in Lei) comes to mind, right? It was renewed in the latter half of 2025, and I've done a deep dive into what vernix actually is, so please check that out. But to summarize briefly: when a baby is in the womb, it's surrounded by amniotic fluid. When it comes out, the environment is dry, so to protect the baby, it's born covered in an oily substance called vernix. Vernix is exactly what protects our skin from dryness, and Kanebo has researched and refined vernix's components to create this formulation. Vernix is quite sticky. Rather than dissolving in water, it's more suited to being made into a cream, which is why it's been offered as a cream until now. But since Japanese people love lotions, the researchers apparently had been thinking, ever since they created the vernix cream, about whether they could turn vernix into a lotion to deliver moisture that way. That said, the vernix cream contains ingredients like macadamia nut fatty acid phytosteryl and fatty acid C10-40 cholesteryl, which have high water-retaining properties. But since these are essentially oils, they couldn't really be mixed into a lotion. However, Kanebo has long excelled in emulsification technology, and they're very skilled at turning oil into liquid form. This time, they took what's called the vernix complex, the base of the vernix cream, and applied pressure by flowing large oil particles from both ends. This creates finer particles, but since a lot of oil is added, it tends to become somewhat heavy. So apparently they repeated this process many times, changing the flow speed and pressure levels in stages, and through these varying conditions, they managed to dissolve it into a lotion. But have you ever noticed how lotion tends to feel dry after some time passes? When Kanebo's researchers investigated this, they found that skin has raised areas called skin ridges and grooves called skin furrows. Having these clearly defined is what creates fine skin texture. When you apply lotion, it briefly sits in both the ridges and furrows, but since water flows from high points to low points, it doesn't stay on the ridges. So it feels moisturized at first, but then it starts to feel dry over time. So, to prevent the water from flowing down from the ridges into the furrows, they developed a formulation designed to make the lotion thicker, so to speak, so that it stays in place rather than flowing away. After applying the lotion, it creates something like a thin veil, similar to a pack, so that even when you make facial expressions, the film follows and adheres to your skin. Since it also contains the oil components of vernix mentioned earlier, it holds in water while protecting it, creating an image of a lotion that constantly wraps the skin in both water and a protective oil film. Just hearing that is impressive, right? It's a lotion that wraps you in water, but its greatest strength lies in boosting the skin's energy. You might wonder what "skin energy" even means, but here's the thing: epidermal cells are born from the basal layer, and through turnover, they gradually grow and become stratum corneum cells before eventually flaking off. This process of being born from the basal layer and growing through turnover requires energy. As for how this energy is produced, each cell contains something called mitochondria, which function like little energy-producing factories. They produce something called ATP, but of course, energy production requires raw materials. That's where a substance called carnitine comes in. Carnitine allows mitochondria to produce ATP, and this is actually the basis behind claims like "taking carnitine helps you lose weight" or "boosts your metabolism." Mitochondria producing energy is what raises metabolism and leads to weight loss, but in the skin, carnitine entering the mitochondria leads to properly activated turnover. Now, we don't actually consume carnitine as a nutrient ourselves, right? But turnover happens normally anyway. Why is that? Well, according to a paper published in 2000, it was discovered that epidermal cells actually produce carnitine on their own. How do they produce carnitine? Through a process called autophagy, where unnecessary substances are broken down and then reused to create something new. For example, when unnecessary amino acids are broken down, carnitine is produced, and this carnitine becomes the source of ATP. It's essentially a recycling system. The human body really is amazing. However, autophagy tends to decline due to factors like inflammation, UV exposure, and aging. If we can activate autophagy, the body can produce its own carnitine, which boosts skin energy. When skin energy rises, turnover becomes more active. And when turnover becomes active, it leads to the production of intercellular lipids and natural moisturizing factors. From here, this is my own speculation, but when energy levels are high, I believe the skin becomes better at eliminating excess melanin. Boosting cellular energy likely increases skin's water content, but I also think it enhances transparency, since the skin may not need to absorb melanin unnecessarily. So through activated turnover, the skin becomes less prone to dryness, becomes capable of producing its own moisture, and may become less receptive to melanin buildup. To activate autophagy and boost the epidermis's energy metabolism, ingredients like eucalyptus leaf extract and peach leaf extract are included. And to further boost carnitine production itself, bladderwrack extract is also included. By energizing the cells themselves, the skin becomes capable of producing its own moisture, while also incorporating the vernix cream into the lotion. On top of that, a thin water film remains on the skin, allowing it to stay there. Because of this, the skin can continue producing its own moisture, resulting in a lotion that keeps the skin consistently hydrated. Isn't that incredible? It's technically a spring lotion, but January and February are still dry months, so I think anyone, regardless of skin type, needs to boost their skin's energy to produce their own moisture, while also wrapping the skin in water from the outside. This really feels like it could become an essential base product for everyone. So I think it can be used universally by anyone, but especially for those who feel like their skin stays dry no matter how much lotion they apply, or those who feel their skin looks dull or lacks vitality, I'd definitely recommend giving this a try. This research and formulation really shows just how amazing Kanebo is, so I'd encourage you to at least go check out the texture in person. So, what did you think? I'm looking forward to introducing many more wonderful cosmetics in 2026 as well, so if there are any items you're curious about, please feel free to leave a comment. Thank you so much for watching until the end. See you in the next video. Goodbye.
