Hello everyone, this is Arata Tomori. Today, even though it hasn't been released yet, I want to talk about Curel's new deep barrier serum that's been buzzing in the sensitive skin community, and why this serum is causing such a stir. The reason this not-yet-released serum is generating so much talk on social media is because it contains a new ingredient called GABOAM. Not only people with sensitive skin, but also those interested in anti-aging care, or those who experience a tingling sensation on their skin even without visible irritation, should pay attention to this. If you want anti-aging care but also experience tingling, please watch until the end. Before talking about this GABOAM ingredient, let me explain why tingling and itching occur in the first place. The skin's surface has a barrier function, and when it breaks down, stimuli get in and cause tingling—that's the common understanding, and it's certainly not wrong. Factors that weaken barrier function include decreased ceramide, a type of intercellular lipid, and reduced natural moisturizing factor, among other reasons. It's said that when barrier function declines, irritants penetrate and cause tingling, but research from Kao has revealed that there may be a deeper cause as well. The keyword is nerve elongation. You might wonder what that means, but in healthy skin, nerve endings stay deep within the skin, roughly between the dermis and epidermis. However, Kao discovered that in people with weakened barrier function or sensitive skin, these nerve endings grow and extend upward, reaching close to the stratum corneum. This means even minor stimuli can trigger tingling or itching. To put it simply, it's like saying someone with exposed nerves becomes more sensitive to nearby stimuli—similarly, when nerves extend upward in the skin, the skin becomes hypersensitive to nearby stimuli, resulting in tingling or itchiness. So why do nerves extend in the first place? This relates to tight junctions, the connections between cells. Cells are lined up connecting to each other like holding hands, and this connection point is called a tight junction. It not only blocks foreign substances from entering but also prevents nerves from growing upward—as long as the tight junctions are properly "holding hands," there's no gap for nerves to grow through. However, if tight junctions aren't functioning well, nerves can grow upward through the gaps. So without caring for tight junctions, tingling sensations can't actually be suppressed. This is exactly what Kao's research focused on. The ingredient developed from this research is called GABOAM, and its official chemical name is gamma-amino-beta-hydroxybutyric acid. When beauty enthusiasts hear "gamma-amino-beta-hydroxybutyric acid," some might think, "wait, isn't that..." And indeed, this isn't the first time this ingredient has been used—it was already present in Twany, a sister brand under the same Kanebo group. It was called Baisamine in Twany. What kind of ingredient was it originally? Setting aside this new discovery for a moment, it was recognized as an active ingredient for regulating normal turnover, which increases skin moisture and thus prevents skin roughness—essentially for dryness care. This Baisamine, or gamma-amino-beta-hydroxybutyric acid, was included for beautiful skin purposes. But this time, further research revealed that by properly tightening the tight junctions, it also suppresses nerve elongation. Previously, normalizing turnover meant producing more ceramide and intercellular lipids, which in turn normalized barrier function for beautiful skin. But now, by also restoring tight junctions, cell-to-cell connections improve, and additionally nerve elongation is suppressed, potentially alleviating tingling sensations too—making this a groundbreaking ingredient. This is why, for Curel's 2024 lineup designed for dry, sensitive skin, this ingredient is being incorporated under the name GABOAM. The fact that GABOAM strengthens tight junctions to reduce tingling sensations has become a huge topic in the sensitive skin community. Of course, GABOAM is wonderful, but when we talk about Curel, ceramide is essential too. The encapsulation technology for properly delivering ceramide to the skin is also impressive. Originally, ceramide is an oil-soluble ingredient, so even when emulsified, its molecular weight tends to become large. This time, they made it smaller—that's one key point. But even having made it smaller, they still encapsulated it to ensure penetration into the skin. The key point this time is that the capsule adheres to the skin and penetrates it. Human stratum corneum tends to be negatively charged. So by giving the capsule a positive charge, it attracts to the skin like magnets attracting opposite poles, which increases penetration power. This technology uses an ingredient called phytosphingosine, which is also a precursor to ceramide, so it also boosts ceramide production itself. In other words, this serum uses GABOAM to regulate turnover while restoring tight junctions to suppress nerve elongation, addressing tingling and discomfort from deep within the skin. And with the new ceramide-plus-capsule technology, it also strengthens the stratum corneum barrier itself. By enhancing both surface barrier function and deeper barrier function, this has become an amazing serum developed specifically for sensitive skin. This time, it's water-based, so it's incredibly light and refreshing—that's another wonderful aspect. So when I used to tell people with oily skin to be careful with ceramide, it wasn't that ceramide itself was bad, but rather that trying to include ceramide at high concentrations inevitably increased oil content. But this time, since it's water-based, I think it would be great not only for people with dry skin but also for those with inner dryness. This serum represents a complete shift in how we think about ceramide. It's also great for people who dislike the stickiness that can come with using ceramide. And of course, since GABOAM is included, it also helps reduce the sensation of tingling. Once it's released in March, I'd like to check out the texture and talk about it together with you all, so please look forward to that. So, what did you think? Today I talked about Curel's new serum launching in March, discussing what feels like an evolutionary leap for the brand. I dive deep into ingredients, unique formulations of new products, and technologies like this that you wouldn't normally know about. If you want to learn more about what's behind the scenes, please subscribe to my channel. See you in the next video. Goodbye.
