Hello everyone, I'm Tamari Arata. Today, due to the effects of daily mask-wearing combined with my naturally oily skin, my pores have become more noticeable, so I've decided to treat myself to a facial procedure at the clinic where I work. My main concerns are enlarged pores and fine lines around my eyes — I want to improve skin firmness and texture. Since Botox and hyaluronic acid aren't suitable for the fine lines under the eyes, I'll be undergoing a treatment called a "Vampire Facial."
A Vampire Facial uses PRP (Platelet-Rich Plasma) — derived from your own blood and containing growth factors and proliferation factors — which is delivered into the skin using a device called a Dermapen. This is an anti-aging treatment that harnesses your body's own regenerative power. For today's procedure, I'm using a specially high-concentration PRP that has been cultured and concentrated by a specialized laboratory, making it even more potent than standard PRP. The treatment targets enlarged pores, acne scars, and fine lines.
I've washed my face and am now bare-faced. At 43, my main concerns are pores, dark circles, and fine lines around the eyes. First, a numbing (anesthetic) cream is applied and left on for about 30 minutes.
The PRP used today was prepared by drawing my blood and sending it to a specialist center for high-concentration cultivation and concentration — more potent than standard PRP products.
After removing the numbing cream and disinfecting the skin, the Dermapen procedure begins. Because I have melasma, I avoided treating those areas and focused on the T-zone, chin, and under-eye area where pores and fine lines are most noticeable. A full-face treatment typically requires two vials of PRP, but since I only treated specific areas, one vial was sufficient.
[During the procedure]
Thanks to the numbing cream, there was much less pain than expected. The cheeks felt mildly itchy at most. The area right at the edge of the eyes was slightly more painful, but nothing unbearable for the sake of better skin. The PRP serum is applied while the Dermapen is used simultaneously. There is some bleeding, which is actually the origin of the "Vampire Facial" name. Since I set the needle depth to a shallower 0.8mm out of consideration for my melasma and pigmentation concerns, my face didn't turn as intensely red as a full vampire facial would.
[Immediately after]
Some redness is visible. After returning home, I washed my face, applied Vaseline to the treated areas, and used my regular skincare on untreated areas.
[Day 1 — the next morning]
Redness remains, especially under the eyes. The forehead (untreated) looks normal. I wore a mask throughout the day, which was sufficient. When I briefly removed it, someone asked what happened, but the reaction was mild overall. There was no pain, so I returned to my regular skincare routine. The redness was easily concealed with makeup.
[Day 2]
The redness had significantly subsided. Some bruising (internal bleeding) remained near the inner corners of the eyes. No pain at all. I used a green-tinted primer on red areas, La Roche-Posay sunscreen all over, and a concealer under the eyes — regular foundation covered everything well.
[One week later]
The change may not be dramatic enough for others to notice after just one session, but personally, I can feel that the fine lines that appear when I smile are less defined, and my pores feel plumper and smoother. Since 4–5 total sessions are recommended to see results noticeable to others, I plan to continue the treatments as my schedule allows.
[About PRP]
PRP therapy is a regenerative treatment that leverages the wound-healing properties of platelets in the blood. During the clotting process, platelets release growth factors that promote skin regeneration. While PRP was previously injected with needles, the use of Dermapen now allows for more uniform delivery with less pain.
Using high-concentration, cultured PRP is key to maximizing results. If you've tried PRP before without noticeable effects, look for clinics that offer "high-concentration PRP." Ideal candidates include those with enlarged pores, fine lines under the eyes, and dark circles. Those with melasma should take care about which areas are treated.
[Downtime summary]
In addition to redness, about half of patients experience skin peeling (desquamation). Because I had a partial treatment at a shallow needle depth of 0.8mm, I experienced no peeling. I masked up on day one, was able to cover redness with makeup by days two and three, and by one week out, there was no peeling and minimal downtime overall.
PRP treatment is not inexpensive and may not be accessible to everyone, but I hope this detailed account of the process and recovery is helpful to those considering it. At 43, I'm committed to investing in my skin!
