Well, it's been a while. I'm feeling the effects of hay fever. It's turned into that hellish season again. So today, let's dig deep into hay fever countermeasures for 2026. Actually, new treatment drugs are coming out, and last year Western Japan had more pollen, but this year data shows that Eastern and Northern Japan have significantly increased compared to the previous year. Kyushu and Tokai regions started from early February. Shikoku and Kanto regions will see pollen start scattering from mid-February, and the key point is to protect yourself with masks not from when it starts scattering, but from before that. This year, the amount is high in Eastern and Northern Japan, while Western Japan and other regions seem to be at normal levels for the year. Since the amount is increasing, there's a possibility that the same medication won't be as effective anymore. As for why Eastern Japan has more this year - how was last summer? It was hot, right? Because it was hot and sunny, the cedar trees grew well. Flower bud formation was promoted. People living in the east might experience more severe symptoms. The peak of the next pollen (cedar) is said to be from early to mid-March, and after that, cypress pollen peaks from March to April, so it seems tough until around before Golden Week, making how you spend these two months a key point. Please remember two things firmly about how to get through this. One is early treatment. If you know you have hay fever, make sure to take medication before symptoms appear. If you don't have hay fever but think 'the amount is high this year so maybe hay fever will wake up in me,' don't just arbitrarily decide to take medication. But if you've had hay fever symptoms consistently last year and the year before, and think it will likely appear again this year, then you should take medication. The guideline is to start taking it about 2 weeks to 1 month before you think it will start scattering. It's totally fine to start taking it from mid-January or early February. You might think it's fine to take medication after symptoms appear, but with hay fever, once the symptom switch is pressed, the nasal mucosa becomes inflamed and the inflammation continues. It becomes more and more sensitive. That switch is called histamine, and what suppresses this is antihistamine medication - the medicine that suppresses hay fever allergies. By suppressing histamine, you prevent the switch from being pressed unnecessarily and prevent the nasal mucosa from becoming sensitive. So it's said you can suppress peak runny nose and itchy eyes. Please start taking it today. Is there something like your face swelling when you take it early on? That doesn't happen. There might be drowsiness, but the newest medications have less drowsiness too, so it's important to consult with your doctor, but above all, going to the hospital early and getting the optimal medication prescribed is the key point. I didn't know that, thank you. Also, reviewing your treatment. You should discuss with your doctor whether this medication is sufficient given that the amount is high this year. If you managed with over-the-counter medication last year but think it might be difficult this year, rather than persisting with OTC medication, going to the hospital and getting stronger medication prescribed is the key point. There's also the question of how to differentiate between OTC and hospital medications - if you have mild runny nose and mild sneezing, OTC medication should be fine, but if you have severe nasal congestion or asthma, you should see a doctor. Nasal congestion in particular is quite difficult to treat with OTC medication. If congestion makes breathing difficult, that affects your breathing, so you should see a doctor for that. You can't breathe through your nose when sleeping, right? If you breathe through your mouth, it dries out and viruses can enter more easily, leading to catching colds, so you should be careful about that. From here, I'd like to introduce some of the latest treatment methods and options that are good to know. When your eyes are itchy, isn't it hard to keep using eye drops? Do you know there's an anti-itch cream you apply to your eyelids? No, I don't know that. It's a cream called Alesion that you apply to your eyelids. Of course, this requires a prescription. Applying this once a day to your eyelids prevents itching from occurring. Wow, that's amazing. Nomori-kun doesn't wear makeup, but when you do wear makeup and the drops interfere, if you apply it before bed at night, the effect lasts all day even after washing your face in the morning, so you can use it that way to suppress eye itchiness. Also, there are children who hate using eye drops, so applying it before bed might be good too, so I want you to remember that this kind of medication exists. Also, there are nasal sprays you can buy over the counter now. Previously there was an ingredient that could only be prescribed by hospitals - mometasone furoate - and it's good to choose products containing that. So if you ask the drugstore staff 'do you have a nasal spray with this ingredient,' they'll likely recommend one, so if you're too busy to go to the hospital, choosing that kind of product would be good. For people who want to fundamentally stop it, or who have exams and can't compromise anymore, there's a last resort medication. It's called Xolair. What I don't want you to misunderstand is that it's not a steroid - I don't recommend steroid injections. Steroids have immediate effects, but the risk of side effects is very strong, so I don't recommend steroids. The treatment drug Xolair is administered by injection once every 2 to 4 weeks to suppress symptoms. However, it's expensive. Even with 30% copay, it can cost tens of thousands of yen, so for people who absolutely cannot take time off work, or have exams, or it's February or March which happens to coincide with exam season, or starting a new job - for people who really need it, I think it could be good. This isn't something to start now, but for next year, there's something called sublingual immunotherapy. Sublingual immunotherapy? It's a fundamental treatment. Everyone probably wants to say goodbye to hay fever for good and never have to deal with it again. For such people, starting from a period when pollen isn't flying, gradually treating it over 2-3 years, introducing small amounts of pollen components into the body to get the body accustomed to it. Starting from after Golden Week in May through around December, so while it can't stop symptoms immediately, in the long run, you might find yourself without symptoms before you know it, so it might be good to consider it after exams are over. Small children often can't do this, so if you say you want to try sublingual immunotherapy, it would be good to consult with your doctor and try it. Also, since this is an allergic symptom, being tired, not getting enough sleep, having irregular meals - these conditions make your body prone to inflammation, making symptoms more likely to appear, so eating fermentable dietary fiber, getting proper sleep, doing these things alongside treatment is the key point, so while implementing the countermeasures discussed today, I really hope you won't have to endure it. So, what do you think? I thought I could respond differently than last year, and I understood that injections are important for times when you need them as a safety net. Fundamental treatment is still really difficult, but treatment methods that don't require enduring symptoms have been emerging quite a bit, so please consult with a specialist doctor. So today we talked about hay fever countermeasures for 2026. Thank you for watching until the end today. Thank you too, Nomori-kun. Thank you. It was like being in a real medical examination room. That's a cool way to research things.
