Hello everyone, this is Arata Tomori. Today, I'd like to explain the correct way to take a bath. There are actually many health benefits, but it's easy to make mistakes or do things that don't have much effect, so please watch until the end today. First, let me explain about bathing. In this case, I'm not just talking about showers, but about taking a bath by immersing yourself in hot water. While showers do help clean your body, immersing yourself in hot water is different. If you want to get the health benefits, you should immerse yourself in hot water. There are three major differences between bathing and just taking a shower. First is the effect of warming your body. While showers can warm you up, immersing yourself in hot water increases your body's heat production. Second is water pressure. When you're immersed in hot water, pressure is applied to your body, which promotes blood circulation and prevents swelling. Third is buoyancy. When you're in hot water, your body floats a bit, which provides relaxation benefits. Since showers don't provide these three effects, it's very important to take a bath almost every day to get these benefits. There are actually many health effects associated with bathing. For example, it's been shown to reduce the risk of depression. This is based on data from a study that followed about 3,200 elderly people over 6 years. When comparing people who bathe in hot water seven or more days a week with those who bathe zero to six days a week, the depression onset rate was dramatically lower in the daily bathing group. Depression is particularly likely to occur in winter due to shorter daylight hours. In winter, depression incidence was found to be 0.24% lower. This is quite significant, I think. Additionally, bathing has been shown to reduce the risk of heart disease. This is research data from Osaka University's research group, following approximately 30,000 people aged 40 to 59 over 20 years. Isn't that amazing? Comparing people who bathe two or fewer times a week with those who bathe almost daily, the daily bathing group showed lower rates of heart disease and myocardial infarction compared to those bathing twice or fewer per week. This is also remarkable. Bathing is also important for elderly care. It's been shown that as bathing frequency increases, the risk of needing care decreases. So even if elderly people find bathing tedious, regular bathing can prevent them from needing care. In this way, bathing has significant positive effects on health. However, there are often mistakes in how people bathe. Many people do half-body bathing thinking it's healthy, but actually, it may not be that beneficial. The reason is that the effects I mentioned earlier—warming your body, improving circulation through water pressure, and the relaxation effect of buoyancy—only occur when you're immersed up to your shoulders in hot water. With half-body bathing, these effects are cut in half. Half-body bathing became popular because full immersion creates water pressure and heat effects that can strain people with heart or lung conditions, making it hard for them to bathe for long periods. However, if you don't have heart or lung conditions, there's not much point in half-body bathing. Recent research shows that full immersion up to the shoulders is better. Previously, it was thought that long baths could lead to beautiful skin through sweating or have weight loss effects, so half-body bathing for long periods was recommended. But this doesn't really work. Sweating from half-body bathing isn't related to weight loss. When you exercise and sweat, your body burns fat, which raises your body temperature, causing you to sweat. But when you soak in hot water, your body temperature rises due to the water, and you sweat without burning fat. So while the sweat looks the same, it's not related to fat burning at all. Even if you want to lose weight, bathing helps with relaxation and preventing swelling, but it won't help you lose weight. For reference, if you rate rest at 1 unit, light walking is about 3.5 units, while bathing is only about 1.5 units. So bathing isn't really physical activity. Modern people rarely sweat naturally because air conditioning is everywhere, and our sweating function has declined. So bathing once a day to sweat is considered exercise for your sweat glands, but it's not real physical exercise or weight loss. Regarding meal timing, if you want to suppress appetite, bathe before eating. When you bathe, blood flow improves, which reduces blood flow to your stomach and intestines, slowing down stomach movement, so you feel less hungry. To suppress blood sugar spikes, bathing after eating seems to be better. If you've overeaten, bathing can reduce blood sugar elevation. Either way works fine. Regarding sleep, humans fall asleep when their body temperature rises and then falls. So raising your body temperature is important, but staying in very hot water for too long prevents your temperature from dropping and can activate your sympathetic nervous system, keeping you awake. Rather than bathing right before sleep, it's better to bathe about an hour before. As your temperature rises and then gradually falls, sleep comes naturally. So about an hour before bed is ideal. Regarding bath additives, you might wonder if you should add something to your bath water. Bath salts come in many varieties—scented, warming, carbonated, etc. Personally, I think adding something is good. Scents you enjoy are important for relaxation, but my recommendation is carbonated bath products. There are two reasons. First, carbon dioxide promotes blood flow and helps warm your body faster. Second, the fine bubbles release nitric oxide from endothelial cells when they contact your skin. Nitric oxide expands capillaries. Recent research shows that having healthy capillaries is important for beautiful skin. If capillaries in the dermis reach the epidermis properly, that's where stem cells are generated. So keeping capillaries healthy is related to beautiful skin. If you don't have access to a jet bath, using carbonated bath products that create fine bubbles is great for both beautiful skin and relaxation. One important point is staying hydrated during bathing. Your body loses about 800ml of water while bathing, so drink one to two cups of water. To summarize: First, bathe almost daily for better health. Second, bathing doesn't have weight loss effects. Third, if you don't have heart or lung conditions, fully immerse yourself up to your shoulders rather than half-body bathing. Use water around 40 degrees Celsius, immersed to your shoulders. Bathe for about 10 minutes rather than long baths. Use bath additives if possible—carbonated ones are recommended. After bathing, drink water to prevent dehydration. And don't forget: always moisturize after bathing. Your skin's keratin layer and ceramides wash away, causing dryness. After lightly drying off, apply body cream or body oil. Japanese people really love bathing, don't they? With correct knowledge and proper bathing, you can improve both your health and skin. I hope you'll try these tips. So, how was today's content? I hope you've learned the correct way to bathe. After watching this, please immerse yourself in warm water up to your shoulders, add a bath product if you can, and enjoy about 10 minutes while watching videos. I'll see you in the next video. Goodbye!
