Hello everyone, I'm Arata Tomori. Today I'd like to talk about an important area that becomes weak and can even lead to dementia. You probably want to avoid needing care or developing dementia, right? To prevent that, some people exercise daily, eat well, and do brain training. However, there's actually another area where modern people easily suffer damage that many people don't know about. That's your ears. Are you taking care of your ears? Living with incorrect habits can damage your ears and lead to dementia or the need for care. Today, let's dive deep into this topic. Have you noticed recently that sounds around you seem muffled, people's voices are hard to hear, or family members complain that you're watching TV too loud? This might actually be the beginning of hearing loss. Currently, the risk of hearing loss has increased significantly. Hearing difficulty typically begins around age 40, and about 80% of people aged 65 and older experience hearing loss. Recently, due to poor lifestyle habits and other factors, these percentages are continuing to increase. You might wonder why hearing loss leads to dementia. When hearing becomes difficult, communication becomes harder. It's been proven that reduced communication ability leads to dementia. In fact, people with hearing loss have almost double—about 1.9 times—the risk of developing dementia compared to those without hearing loss. Social activities involve going out, which maintains physical fitness and reduces the need for care. So being able to hear is extremely important. Why does hearing become difficult with age? The mechanism of hearing involves bone conduction, where vibrations from bone tremors are transmitted, and air conduction, where the nervous system naturally perceives sound. As we age, the nerves weaken, making sounds harder to hear. It's not just age that causes hearing difficulty—there are many cases where it happens more easily, so let me discuss lifestyle and dietary habits that can prevent this. Basically, as we age, hair cells in the ear that sense sound become damaged. This is unavoidable due to aging. However, certain lifestyle habits accelerate this damage. Specifically: earbuds. When watching videos, people tend to turn up the volume when using earbuds or headphones. The louder the sound, the more damage occurs. Once hair cells are damaged, they cannot be restored. Listening to loud sounds from a young age increases susceptibility to damage. To protect hair cells, don't listen to loud volumes through earbuds. Also, using a hair dryer for over 15 minutes is reportedly risky. The key is avoiding loud sounds close to your ears for extended periods. Another issue is improper ear cleaning. Normally, earwax is naturally expelled. However, cleaning excessively because it feels good can cause inflammation. While over-cleaning is bad, not cleaning enough is also problematic. For people with moist earwax, leaving it unattended can cause buildup leading to hearing loss. I recommend visiting an ear, nose, and throat doctor for checkups and professional cleaning. While hearing loss is somewhat inevitable with age, these lifestyle habits can accelerate it significantly. Beyond avoiding harmful habits, consuming foods that can benefit the hair cells that affect hearing ability is important. For preventing hearing loss: nuts are excellent because they contain vitamin E, which is said to be effective for sudden hearing loss. Vitamin E improves blood flow in the inner ear, potentially enhancing hearing ability. Nuts contain many antioxidant compounds that may reduce damage, so eat them regularly. Cucumber is also good for ears because it contains abundant vitamin C. It's said to eliminate free radicals and reduce damage. The combination of vitamin C and vitamin B12 is believed to reduce damage, and cucumber is an easy food to eat regularly. Clams and other foods rich in vitamin B12 help repair peripheral nerves. Some people with tingling hands and feet take vitamin B12 medications, and improving inner ear blood flow is important. There's hope that eating vitamin B12-rich foods can slow ear aging, so consume them regularly. So today, I've explained how hearing difficulty can cause dementia. People often don't notice their own hearing loss. When family members notice the TV volume increasing or hearing sound leaking from earbuds, there's a strong possibility that hearing loss is progressing. It's important to recognize your own hearing difficulty and for others to point it out. Some people's dementia actually improves after getting hearing aids. By maintaining ear health through good lifestyle and dietary habits, you can maintain health at any age. I hope today's video was helpful. By the way, we're recruiting members at just 90 yen per month. Every Wednesday, we hold YouTube Lives exclusive to members about beauty and health. Archives are available, so members can watch anytime. Please consider joining. Thank you for watching until the end today. See you in the next video. Goodbye.
