Hello everyone, this is Tomo, a dermatologist. Today I want to talk, from a dermatologist's perspective, about whether a popular beauty method—using a sheet mask every day to get beautiful skin—is actually true. Everyone loves sheet masks, right? I love them too and use them often. Ever since actresses started saying things like "I use a sheet mask every day," it seems to have become a bit of a trend. Because of this, I get asked a lot: "Doctor, is it really true that just using a sheet mask gives you beautiful skin?" So today I want to answer that directly. To cut to the conclusion right away: whether using a sheet mask every day gives you beautiful skin depends on the person. Some of you might think, "well, of course it depends," but I do think most people will get beautiful skin from it. However, that "beautiful skin" doesn't mean things like spots disappearing, wrinkles disappearing, or sagging disappearing. It means skin that maintains moisture well, has a reasonably maintained barrier function, and has fine texture. It doesn't mean that signs of aging like spots, wrinkles, and sagging will disappear just from that. If we define "beautiful skin" as skin that's not dry, has a moist feel, and looks radiant, I think about 70% of people can achieve that. But the remaining 30% may actually experience skin trouble, so I want to explain that carefully. First, the best thing about sheet masks is that they can deliver moisture evenly to the stratum corneum. Even applying lotion with your hands or a cotton pad delivers moisture, but placing a sheet on your face allows it to penetrate thoroughly into areas that hands or cotton pads might miss. This allows beauty ingredients and moisture to be applied evenly. So if your usual skincare routine tends to be rushed, or if you weren't applying enough moisture, using a sheet mask daily can increase the water content of the stratum corneum, refine your skin texture, and give you glowing, firmer-looking skin. If the sheet mask contains beauty ingredients, those will also be delivered evenly, which can lead to whitening effects, firmness, and pore care. However, there's one thing you absolutely must observe with sheet masks: time. I think there are still quite a few people who believe that leaving it on for a long time is really good for you, but think about it. Remember your science classes—imagine plain water on one side and water with a lot of sugar dissolved in it on the other side, separated by a divider. When you suddenly remove the divider, the concentrated sugar water mixes into the plain water. Osmotic pressure works by moving from a higher concentration to a lower one—that's the basic principle. Applying this to skin: when your skin lacks moisture, the beauty ingredients in the sheet mask will naturally move into the skin due to this osmotic pressure mechanism. In other words, the structure is such that it delivers ingredients properly into the skin through osmotic pressure even without leaving it on for a long time. So, keep it to around 5 minutes; if the product says 10 minutes, that's fine too, but try to keep it within 5 to 10 minutes and remove it promptly. Another point that surprises many people: a lot of people have the image that sheet masks are especially good when your skin is irritated or unstable, but that's actually wrong. When your skin is irritated or unstable, sheet masks can actually backfire, so it's better not to use them much in those cases. The sheet itself or its ingredients often act as irritants, so when your skin is unsettled, going back to simple care is the best approach. In such cases, it's better to gently apply moisture by hand using something without added beauty ingredients, then seal it in with an oil-based layer, rather than using a sheet mask. In particular, using a sheet mask when you have acne can backfire. Since your skin stays wet, this can actually cause acne-causing bacteria to multiply, so if you have a lot of acne, I'd recommend not using sheet masks frequently. So, it's fine to use a sheet mask every day, but you should stop when your skin feels unstable, when you have acne, or when something just feels off, and you should always observe the time limit. If you follow these rules, I think about 70% of people will see their skin texture improve and dryness reduce from daily sheet mask use. However, for the remaining people—especially those with sensitive skin—I'd recommend avoiding it. This is because, while sheet masks are excellent at delivering moisture thoroughly into the skin, using too much can cause the skin to become oversaturated and soften excessively. In particular, people with sensitive skin or atopic skin tend to have a lower ability to retain moisture to begin with, and they're already more sensitive to various stimuli. So being exposed for a long time to the texture of the sheet fibers or to the ingredients can further weaken the skin barrier function. So, for sensitive skin, I'd suggest using it about 2-3 times a week rather than daily—there's no need to do it frequently. People who get beautiful skin from daily sheet mask use likely have a naturally high skin potential to begin with, so if that's you, please go ahead and continue. But if you struggle with sensitive skin or acne, you don't need to use it every day, and I wouldn't really recommend it. Also, sheet masks generally come in two types. One type is relatively affordable and focused on delivering plenty of moisture. The other type, at around 1000 yen per sheet, is packed with beauty ingredients. If you use the ones loaded with beauty ingredients frequently, that can actually cause acne or irritation. So rather than using those as care for unstable skin, it's better to save them for special care occasions—like "I have a date tomorrow" or "I have a photoshoot today." If you really want to use a sheet mask every day, an affordable one is perfectly fine—just think of it as thoroughly delivering water and moisture evenly into the stratum corneum. I actually know someone who uses a sheet mask every day and has gotten noticeably beautiful skin. She also uses an affordable, cost-effective one frequently, and she applies it in the morning rather than at night. Applying moisture to the stratum corneum in the morning helps suppress excess sebum a bit, and having that moisture can make your skin look brighter—so affordable, moisture-rich masks are better used in the morning rather than at night. On the other hand, pricier sheet masks packed with beauty ingredients are better used at night a few times a week, so it's good to use them differently depending on the purpose. To summarize: it's fine to use a sheet mask every day, but it depends on the person, and it depends on the product. For ones with strong beauty-serum effects, once or twice a week is enough. For affordable ones soaked in something like lotion, daily use is fine, but when you do, use it in the morning and keep it to within 10 minutes—ideally around 5 minutes. Even for special care, if your skin is unstable or you have acne, it's best to avoid it. When doing special care, use a beauty-serum type mask before bed, once or twice a week. A beauty method that worked well for someone else doesn't necessarily work for everyone. Please keep what I talked about today in mind, and think things through as you do your skincare—"Is today a good day to use it?" "Maybe I should skip it today." "Should I use this one in the morning or would night be better?" If you enjoyed today's content, please give it a thumbs up, and if you have any recommended sheet masks or beauty methods, please share them in the comments—I'd love to hear them. See you in the next video. Goodbye.
