Hello everyone! I'm Tomori Ara. Today I'd like to talk about the basics of moisturizing that many of you may actually be getting wrong. If you're moisturizing incorrectly, the more you moisturize, the more your pores can actually open up, so in order to choose the right moisturizer for you, I really want you to understand these fundamentals of moisturizing, so please watch until the end. As I always say on YouTube, please think of your skin as a large bag protecting your body from external stimuli. This is called the barrier function. First, strengthening this barrier function is the basic ABC of moisturizing. This barrier function protects our skin through three elements. The first is sebum. Sebum sitting on top of the stratum corneum acts like a lid of oil, preventing things from entering from outside and preventing internal moisture from escaping. However, sebum is quite tricky because too much is also bad, so it's a bit difficult to control, and whether sebum glands are naturally active varies from person to person, and sebum also changes with the seasons. Then there's age. At birth, almost no sebum is produced, and elementary school children don't produce much either, but when secondary sexual development begins, such as with the onset of menstruation, sex hormones stimulate sebum production for the first time. That's why elementary school children rarely get acne, but once secondary development begins in late elementary school or junior high, sebum suddenly increases, leading to acne or suddenly enlarged pores. Sebum is a bit tricky depending on age group. Sebum is very important for moisturizing, but if you give too much, it can lead to enlarged pores or acne. There are two more elements. One is called intercellular lipids. As you can see in this diagram, these are lipids filling the gaps between cells in the stratum corneum. A famous example is ceramide. Cells are born from what's called the basal membrane and repeatedly divide as they grow, eventually becoming the stratum corneum. During this growth process, various intercellular lipids like ceramide and hyaluronic acid are created, so this process is very important. When intercellular lipids are low, especially ceramide, this leads to dry skin or atopic dermatitis. That's why people with dry, sensitive skin are often told to properly supplement ceramide. The other element is called Natural Moisturizing Factor (NMF). NMF is a component inside the cells of the stratum corneum that pulls water into the cells. If NMF doesn't pull in water, the cells of the stratum corneum shrink and become less moist, becoming flat, which creates gaps. It's very important for the cells themselves to pull in water so there's proper moisture between them. NMF is made of amino acids. When products say that adding amino acids provides moisture, this means they're increasing this natural moisturizing factor. So what do we need? First, as I mentioned, the representative example for supplementing NMF is ceramide. When it comes to using ceramide, Curél comes to mind. This is truly a wonderful product. As I mentioned, ceramide, which is the source of intercellular lipids, is very necessary - people lack ceramide and that's why they become dry. So for people with dry, sensitive skin, ceramide supplementation is recommended, and it's included generously. However, ceramide can be included at higher concentrations in creams compared to lotions. So I think creams probably contain higher concentrations than lotions. That's why I think Curél is great for people who lack both sebum and moisture. Another one from the same company, Kao, is Sofina iP. Do you know the difference? This also properly contains ceramide, but it also cares for the natural moisturizing factor. Sofina iP has the feature of expanding keratin fibers. Inside the cells of the stratum corneum, there are both keratin fibers and natural moisturizing factors. By expanding these keratin fibers, the ability of NMF to pull in water expands as well. So while Curél is for extremely dry skin lacking oil, this product increases both NMF and intercellular lipids. A higher-tier version of this is THE ESTE Lotion. It focuses on expanding the keratin fibers inside stratum corneum cells even further, so it provides anti-aging care and makes each cell plump and moist. When cell care is done properly, communication between the epidermal cells below also improves, and since the basal membrane and dermis are connected, that coordination also improves, leading to anti-aging care for the entire skin. I want you to understand this difference. Another product that creates intercellular lipids is Rice Power No. 11. This works on the basal membrane to normalize skin turnover, and by normalizing it, it promotes the production of intercellular lipids, especially ceramide. While Curél supplements ceramide, Rice Power No. 11 lets your skin make it itself. Rice Power gives the image of improving things from the inside, and since Rice Power itself is a rice extract, it dissolves easily in water. It can be applied generously even in watery lotions, so it might be great even for people with dry skin who dislike stickiness. Being able to make it yourself while also supplementing is very good, so I think Rice Power No. 11 is good for people with dry skin. Another interesting ingredient is heparinoid, found in Curel HD [Karte HD]. Heparinoid is amazing - it creates intercellular lipids, cleans up this lamellar structure, and also creates natural moisturizing factor inside cells to pull in water. So heparinoid works on both fronts. The pink version is for extremely dry skin, but there's also a green version that doesn't add oil, so for people who are concerned about pores but also experience dryness, heparinoid, which creates both intercellular lipids and natural moisturizing factor, seems like a great option. One more thing - what's needed to create natural moisturizing factor is amino acids. When it comes to amino acids, Minon comes to mind. Minon of course contains ceramide too, so it creates intercellular lipids, but it's more focused on creating natural moisturizing factor. So it properly fills the moisture inside the cells. When it comes to supplementing sebum, we tend to think of creams or emulsions, but sebum depends on your constitution, and also changes according to season and age. So wouldn't it be great if you could control sebum in the way that's best suited to you? Something that suppresses it when there's too much, and produces it when there's too little would be ideal, and what actually does this is Rice Power No. 7. Rice Power No. 7 doesn't particularly promote secretion when sebum is excessive, but for people lacking sebum, it can send a signal telling the skin to produce sebum. Additionally, it also has some effect on increasing intercellular lipids, so for people who lack both sebum and intercellular lipids, but don't want to add oil and don't want stickiness, Rice Power No. 7 seems like a great option. So, what did you think? Not many people talk about moisturizing in terms of which barrier function to boost, so this might have been a bit difficult, but simply put, sebum doesn't really need much supplementing since it can make things a bit sticky anyway, but natural moisturizing factor is good, and intercellular lipids are absolutely necessary regardless of skin type, so I think it's good to remember which ingredients increase these, and think about which one you're lacking as you do your skincare. Adjusting the barrier function really is the ABC of beautiful skin - moisturizing is the fundamental basic of beautiful skin, so if you get confused, please watch this YouTube video again to review. Thank you for watching until the end today. On this channel, I talk about basic things related to beauty and health, as well as the latest findings, so please subscribe if you'd like.
