Hello everyone, this is Arata Tomorii. Today, as I've written in the thumbnail, I'm going to talk about summer mask makeup. I apologize for starting without makeup, so thank you for your understanding. I think it was about 2 to 3 months ago, right when I started YouTube, that I made a video about mask makeup. If you'd like, please take a look at it. The main focus at that time was still during the cold season, so we covered skincare and makeup from the perspective of preventing dry skin and skin irritation caused by wearing masks. However, more recently, about a month ago, I also released a video about being careful with mask-induced blemishes and mask spots. If you'd like, please watch that one too.
What's different from winter mask makeup is, first of all, ultraviolet rays. I think I've mentioned this several times in this video, but 70% of skin aging is caused by ultraviolet rays. So it comes down to how much you can prevent photoaging. In summer, you need to do proper skincare and cover it with makeup, but on top of that, we're wearing masks this year. As I mentioned in my previous video, wearing a mask causes constant physical friction and irritation, which leads to inflammation. So even if you apply sunscreen and suppress inflammation caused by sun exposure, friction causes inflammation again. Additionally, friction removes the sunscreen as well, creating a vicious cycle. So first and foremost, I need to focus on stopping the inflammation.
Another thing I mentioned in winter is that when you wear a mask, your breath contains water vapor, which constantly fills the inside of the mask. This causes your skin to become macerated. When this happens, intercellular lipids, which are components that stick skin cells together and retain moisture, gradually seep out and leak away. This causes dryness and reduces the skin's barrier function. But then in summer, the heat is added on top of this, so sebum starts to come out. However, the moisture inside becomes completely dry, which causes a condition called inner dryness. This makes people with originally dry or sensitive skin experience symptoms like facial redness and itching. It also causes the face to become slightly yellowish and dull. Additionally, for those concerned about acne and pore enlargement, this becomes a truly harsh situation where keratin plugs pop out from the pores, and acne develops on the chin.
In this video, among the summer mask makeup troubles, I'd like to introduce skincare to makeup for those concerned with blemishes, dullness, pore enlargement, and keratin plugs. Please watch until the end.
First, skincare before makeup is extremely important. How you choose skincare determines whether you can stop inflammation caused by irritation, ultraviolet rays, and friction, and how much you can protect your skin. So you need to add moisture while incorporating anti-inflammatory ingredients and protective vitamins. Skincare is extremely important, so let's start with that. Let me tie my bangs back a bit. This is something I've been using a lot recently. Hair clips that don't leave marks are very convenient, though they're not really related to this topic.
Anyway, let's get to the main topic. First, you need to add moisture. When adding moisture, it's important not only to retain water properly, but also to use a toner that already contains anti-inflammatory ingredients. So I'm going to introduce two products today. First, this one. I've introduced this before among affordable toners: Shiseido's Aqualabel Balancing Care Lotion. This contains amino acids and solid moisturizing and water-retaining ingredients, so it's a fresh type. But what I think makes this toner especially recommended for summer is that it contains tranexamic acid, which has anti-inflammatory effects, and also palmityl retinol, which is a protective vitamin A.
Palmityl retinol works like this: when your skin has sufficient palmityl retinol and is exposed to ultraviolet rays, it protects your skin from damage. While it's not quite sunscreen level, when ultraviolet rays hit your skin, palmityl retinol blocks them, so it enhances the effectiveness of sunscreen. It may also repair collagen and elastin that are damaged by ultraviolet rays. So you definitely want to include palmityl retinol. Additionally, this contains tranexamic acid. Tranexamic acid suppresses inflammation when it occurs. Since your skin is constantly experiencing friction from the mask, you want to include tranexamic acid. So I think this is really excellent because it contains moisturizing ingredients, anti-inflammatory tranexamic acid, and protective palmityl retinol—it's really a superb toner that I think is essential for summer mask makeup.
So take quite a generous amount of this and spread it over your entire face. Especially this cheek area—this is where the mask also rubs easily and ultraviolet rays hit frequently, so make sure to apply it thoroughly. And your neck too—apply it well. After the first application, add a bit more. The eye area. Actually, the upper eyelid area also gets hit by ultraviolet rays and can develop blemishes, but blemish removal around the eyes is quite troublesome. Also, around the nostrils. Make sure to apply it thoroughly to these areas too.
You know how sometimes skin becomes glossy and gets a certain shine? Apply it thoroughly until you get a bit of that. Some people tap-tap-tap at this point, but it's completely pointless. Tapping doesn't help absorption, so you don't need to bother with that.
And now, about whether to use cotton or your hands—this is an eternal question. Of course, research by companies like Shiseido shows that cotton increases skin moisture, but honestly, I think either is fine. The reason is that cotton absorbs some of the product, and cotton application techniques can be quite difficult. If you apply roughly, you create friction, which is problematic. So if you've properly learned cotton application techniques, cotton is fine. But I don't want to waste money on cotton, and I want to feel the condition of my skin directly with my hands, so I don't use cotton.
Next is essence. For essence, what's important to add... we just added tranexamic acid, palmityl retinol, and peptides for water retention, but when it comes to beautiful skin vitamins, vitamin C is king. Not using vitamin C in summer mornings is like going outside without wearing underwear—that's how important it is. So I always use vitamin C.
My recent favorite is Spa Treatment Real C Serum. Vitamin C tends to irritate many people's skin, but maybe because this contains a lot of glycerin, it doesn't get that warm. It's pure vitamin C, so it has both sustained and immediate effects. When you apply it to your skin in the morning, it works gradually and provides ultraviolet protection, I believe. So I mainly use this. The key point is here—the cheek area. This is where blemishes form most easily and where friction occurs. Also, the nose. This is a key point, so apply it to the nose too.
Why? Because vitamin C suppresses sebum secretion and keratin plug formation, and it suppresses the inflammation that occurs around the nose due to sebum secretion. So apply it thoroughly here, then apply the rest over the entire face.
Your face line is exposed even with a mask on, so you need to apply it thoroughly to this area too. Also make sure to apply it carefully around the eyes. This is the right amount.
So as I said before, not applying vitamin C in the morning is like going outside without underwear—absolutely keep this in mind. Of course, you don't have to use Spa Treatment. Use any serum or toner that contains vitamin C. Vitamin C must be applied to your skin every morning.
Finally, after adding moisture and nutrients, you need to create a protective barrier. But this season, I really dislike the sticky feeling, so some people might think this alone is enough. However, if you don't properly create that barrier, your skin's barrier function will be compromised. For this reason, I recommend this product, which I also mentioned in winter—I really love this emulsion. This is Estée Lauder's GP Enriched Serum Whitening Emulsion. It says essence, but it's basically an emulsion. Think of it as an emulsion with plenty of essence in it.
It contains ingredients that activate autophagy to address inflammation, and it also contains Kamomile ET, which is unique to Kao. Kamomile ET, unlike vitamin C, palmityl retinol, and tranexamic acid that I mentioned earlier, works to suppress the activity of melanocytes themselves, which produce melanin. So each ingredient works differently. So it's really important to include various whitening effects and anti-inflammatory ingredients. For that reason, I love this one. Really, just about this much is completely fine.
So apply this, especially around the eyes where dryness becomes more noticeable. Apply it like this over the whole face. Start with the cheeks first, because the T-zone tends to get oily, so leave the T-zone for last. After applying around the eyes like this, add a bit more to the nose area and your neck. There, skincare is complete.
The skincare points are: first, hydration—add water properly. This Aqualabel product contains collagen and peptides, and it has anti-inflammatory tranexamic acid and protective palmityl retinol.
Next, when ultraviolet rays hit your skin, vitamin C's antioxidant effect counteracts the damage, plus it tightens pores and suppresses the redness caused by keratin plugs when they form. Additionally, vitamin C itself suppresses sebum secretion, so vitamin C is absolutely essential.
Finally, this emulsion really just needs a small amount. But it contains Kamomile ET, which suppresses melanin production through a different mechanism than the previous ingredients, so I use this one.
So that's the skincare up to this point. Often people ask me if there are other essences containing palmityl retinol besides Aqualabel. When I feel that just the Balancing Lotion isn't quite enough, I use Albion's Anfinesse Injector OSK, which is an Albion essence. This also contains palmityl retinol generously packed in. You know, with a luxurious 28 bottles inside, and each one packed with palmityl retinol, the plumping and radiance effects are really amazing. So I use it in the mornings sometimes and evenings other times. In summer, especially July and August, I often use this as my essence. So for palmityl retinol, which products contain it? If not Aqualabel, this one works fine too.
And from here on, now that skincare is perfect—UV rays can somewhat hit your skin, but your skin is completely protected with all these beauty ingredients packed in—does everyone remember what comes next? That's right—apply sunscreen! If you don't apply sunscreen, even if you use the best toner, it's meaningless. So let's apply it first.
For this video, I think I used BB cream for the finish last time, but in summer, you really need to apply it generously. Regarding the application method, there's a video on how to apply sunscreen, so please refer to that. Okay, from here it's fast-forwarded. Alright.
Now that we've finished with the fast-forward, let me say this once more—please be persistent with sunscreen. Here, and again I'll be persistent about this: let's layer it on the C-zone where blemishes tend to form. Apply it like this. And on the upper face line, this area isn't covered by the mask, so apply it thoroughly. Yes, now that it's applied, previously I used BB cream twice, but in summer, because of UV rays and the friction from the mask, things tend to get dull—you get this kind of dullness, don't you? This happens inevitably to Asian women—dullness just keeps occurring, so if we don't add a bit of pink to brighten the color, it tends to look muddled. So I'm using La Roche-Posay UV Idea Protector Tone Up Rose—this is a quite pinkish base. Many of you probably like this too, it gives this kind of pink tone. When you apply this—it also has sunscreen benefits—and you apply it to the face line thinking you'll prevent dullness, sometimes your face ends up looking completely white. So apply a pink veil to the T-zone and the chin area like this, and finish it up. Here, the base is complete. With summer mask makeup, you don't want it to break down, right? So you don't really want to apply too much, but as you say, you have plenty of places you want to hide—I think that's everyone's concern. But I think even if makeup breaks down, it's fine if it breaks down beautifully. If it deteriorates into a mushy mess... well, you can't go completely bare-faced either. So what I'd recommend is this product from before: UNASol Glowing Watery Oil Liquid—this is a product. I think it's been around for about two or three years. The nice thing about it is that it's marketed as a water foundation, and it's really light. It's a liquid, but it's incredibly fluid, like water itself, so it's a liquid foundation that in summer has this lightweight feel that I absolutely love. This summer and once more with this lightweight feel that gives transparency, I bought it again. Now here's the thing: everyone experiences this—maybe it's because we're over 40 now, maybe people in their 20s don't experience it as much—but dullness definitely occurs. It's from friction and such. So technically a foundation alone would be fine, but because we definitely want to suppress dullness, we added pink to the base. But regarding the foundation color: many of you probably choose ocher tones, right? It's natural that Asians tend to choose ocher tones, but when dullness occurs, ocher tones just keep looking duller and duller. So I want to add a bit of pink. But if you use only a pinkish or pink-toned color, it can look a bit dated. Balancing this is really important. So I'm actually using this: SUQQU Shimmer Liquid Blush 103. This might be limited edition and already gone, but this is actually a blush. But as a blush, it's incredibly sheer, so I use just a tiny, tiny bit—this tiny amount—I mix just a bit of this pink with the foundation. So even with a foundation you already have, it doesn't have to be this one, you could mix it with a slightly pinkish base, or from earlier with the tone up, maybe add a bit more. Or you could mix it that way, but rather than using only ocher-toned products, by adding something slightly pinkish, you prevent dullness and create a transparency boost point. Instead of applying it overall, apply it only to problem areas. If you apply foundation all over, it will definitely break down. So apply it really thinly. Especially these reddish areas around the nose—many people try to cover these with just concealer, but concealer tends to get thick, doesn't it? So I prefer to apply this lightweight foundation really thinly—that way the skin doesn't break down. And for the puff, as I introduced before, the Rosy Rosa Jelly Touch Sponge: you soak it in water, and when you blend the foundation, using this really makes it set firmly and smoothly. In that sense, even if you apply foundation really thinly, it's not a problem. Can you see? Doesn't this redness look better? Can you tell? Do you see? This completes the overall look. But the under-eye area—my skin is thin there too, so I easily get dark circles. So when I put the mask on like this, the focus goes right to the under-eye area. If this area looks dull or has dark circles, people think, "Oh, must be tired." So I want to use concealer just here. So for hiding dark circles under the eyes, my recent recommendation is this: Dior Skin Forever Skin Correct Concealer. I pulled out two because with concealers, it's hard to find a color that's just right. This first one is a bit too white. If I apply it here, just this area becomes whiteish and stands out. But the second one is a bit darker, and then just that spot looks muddy. So I'm the type who mixes concealers. So I first apply a slightly darker one like this—two taps. Since I especially have dark circles on the rim of my eyes, I tap it there. But don't apply too much. Next, this slightly whiter one—I apply this slightly lower area like this. Then I blend it with my fingers—tap tap tap tap tap—and once I've mixed it and it looks good, this color works, then I apply it to the edge and blend it sideways like this. See how the dark circles are hidden? It's hidden naturally, so this two-tone application is quite recommended. This Dior concealer is really thin, and the under-eye area—if you crease it, it becomes wrinkled, right? Even when it wrinkles, it doesn't crack, so it's very recommended. But the problem is this scratch my daughter made here. Do you sometimes get these? There are also things like acne scars. Can you see this? This—well, you could use that, but really, the best thing is this: Ipsa Whitening Creative Concealer. I'm sure everyone has this—this one. Sorry, I use it quite a bit, so it's like this—the three-shade version. This honestly has nothing to do with mask makeup, it's just my personal thing because there's a scratch here, but this has three shades, right? So I can mix colors myself, which is perfect for hiding scratches. So it's a bit off-topic this time, but this time it's red, so I'll mix it a bit. It can't be too dark, so I apply it like this, and blend around it with my fingers, and look—you can't see it anymore. The scratch is fine now. So how is it? The scratch disappeared, right? Babies really are merciless, right? They scratch pretty hard, so your face can end up all scratched up. For times like that, this is the best. Once we get here, we start drawing eyebrows and such, but before that, I apply powder. My recent recommendation is Ulurin's Elemental Powder. This is a powder, but the name says "skin care powder," so rather than using powder as a cosmetic to create transparency or remove shine, this contains beauty serum ingredients and plant-based beauty ingredients, so just by applying this, beauty benefits last all day. I have three types of this, and among them, I like and use the one called Auge. This Auge contains birch seed extract, which apparently has the effect of improving dullness, and that's in it. Plus the scent is incredibly soothing. So when I use this overall, it improves dullness and also has a soothing effect. Beyond the beauty ingredients, the base is mica—really fine stuff—and it contains silica too, so when you put on a mask, it prevents the foundation from showing through so much, with this subtly fluffy powder. I apply it like this. Can you tell? Fluffy fluffy fluffy fluffy. This scent—if you can smell it, that's enough. It's such a fluffy scent, and the powder feels so nice in your hand, so I apply this powder over everything—I particularly apply it to the area around my small nose and here, and especially around the eyebrows—all these areas. Then at the end, with a slightly larger brush, I apply it over everything, including down to the neck area. So, how is it? The base is complete. Next is the eyebrows. As I said before, if you make them too dark, with mask makeup it becomes... I'm an Amura-generation person, so I don't have this edge. So it's Kate's Designing Eyebrow, but the part where the color just barely comes on—I apply from this starting point and draw the eyebrow head from there. And from there, this upper part—I apply a bit there and draw up to the eyebrow head like this. Otherwise it gets too dark. Once I get to about here, here's my secret weapon: Lancôme's Sourcil Powder Créme. What this is—it's an eyebrow pencil that's in powder form. So because it's powder form, for the eyebrow head and eyebrow tail, when you draw with it, if you apply too much it gets dark, but since I don't have eyebrows, it's really useful. So after I draw the eyebrow tail with this, what do you think? Like this. There isn't an edge, there is an edge. It's really powder, so it makes it look like there are actual hairs there. Don't you see, half of it doesn't have hair, but here it really does. And because it sets firmly with powder, I don't have the issue of just the end of the eyebrow disappearing. Let me do half-face makeup—eyeshadow and such. After that, if I think it's just a bit dark, I use the Kate eyebrow brush again to add a bit of color and soften it to make it gentler. Like this. Next is eyeshadow. Recently, or for a while now, I've liked this: Excel's Real Close Shadow. I really think this is the strongest product. It has a refined feel and gives transparency. At first I thought this green might be hard to use, but let's set aside the green. This pink, this pink-beige, and this brown really give such a refined feeling that especially when you're wearing only a mask, if your eye makeup stands out too much, it can look overdone and stand out. So it naturally makes the eyes glamorous, and since I wear a white coat often, I don't do eyeshadow that's too intense. But I want to look like I'm properly made up. I basically use this all the time. First I apply pink all over the eye area. Then I apply eyeshadow over the entire eye area. Or if needed, I can even apply the brown with my hand. On the eyeball area, I apply brown. And then I apply it like I'm drawing an eyeliner at this edge. And I apply a bit under the eye too. Make absolutely sure this doesn't go on the mucous membrane. This might be hard to see, let me get closer. So, what do you think? Can you see? Like this, like this, something like this, like this. And for eyeliner, I've been trying various things recently, and this is SUQQU's eyeliner—this slightly dark brown one. And there's one that says Khaki, which is also a slightly darker dark brown. And the last one is really red-toned brown. This last red-toned brown. From above, SUQQU's eyeliner with a bit of red here, and another SUQQU one that's slightly yellowish. And there's also a D-Up one. So I've tried various ones, and what I think is good is this SUQQU eyeliner, this one that says Khaki. As I showed before, the middle one is a bit darker. So it's not too red and not too brown, so I think it's pretty good. At first I thought, yellow, so what's up with that? But when I bought it, it was good. So I apply this at the lash line without going too far into the eye. And you can extend it a bit, but really, when you're wearing a white coat or need to look clean, if you do too much of this sharp line, it feels like you're wearing makeup, so I don't really flick out the outer corner of my eye. After I draw the eyeliner, I blur it a bit with this, the one from before, and connect it to the lower lash line somehow. How is it? This and this. And then you apply mascara. But I recently stopped getting extensions. So my eyelashes have a lash perm applied, so they're already curled up, so I apply mascara. Sometimes I apply a primer and sometimes I don't.
When you want to finish, you use Lancôme's Hypnôse Waterproof number 01. What's good about this is that the tip is quite small and has a fine, wood-like appearance at the tip, so it lifts the lashes finely. It doesn't make them too bulky, but it extends them nicely and firmly, so it's quite nice. How does it look? I haven't applied a primer, but you can see it's extending quite well. I haven't used an eyelash curler either, but I think the eye has gained quite a bit of definition. How is it? For the lower lashes, I want to apply mascara to the lower lashes too, but I use Uz's Mote Mascara Micro, which is quite small, really small, and I only apply it to the lower lashes naturally. If you overdo it on the lower lashes, it looks like surprised eyes, so it's good to focus on just under the iris or just that area. So I'm doing half the eye makeup and leaving half without. It looks like this. Let me do the other half. Okay, the left side is done. The right side is done too, so let me move my hair out of the way. It looks like this. How is it? As for the blush issue, I haven't been wearing blush recently. Why? Because when you layer lots of things, it tends to smudge and crease. So anticipating that it will crease, I keep sponges in my pouch like this. I put a sponge and powder foundation—this is Albion's—into my pouch, and if it creases a bit, I touch it up right there. If I add blush, it tends to get dull at that spot or the color gets dirty, so I haven't been using blush recently. So during mask makeup, I could add it, but if I do add something, it's just a slight pinkish tone. If I add any, it's with this Givenchy Prism Blush, which has a color that's a bit pink and purple. I take it like this and tap it lightly, repeatedly—because it definitely creates uneven patches—I apply just enough that you can barely tell if I've applied anything or not. Just a hint of pink. You can see it a little, right? And when I wash it off, I hope the color shows up around this area. Anyway, about lipstick. Lipstick is also difficult because it doesn't come off easily, so I'm using a tinted type that adds a bit of color while keeping my lips moisturized. I'm using Cosme Decorté's Tinted Lip Oil. What number is this? I think it's number 05. It's a lip gloss, so I can apply this directly without using a brush, and it applies nicely. Since it's a tinted type, the color gradually builds up like this. How is it? Rather than being about not getting the lipstick on the mask, when you're exposed to UV rays and the mask rubs your skin, it's about what ingredients prevent damage to your skin and how well you prevent dullness. So I use a pink primer, mix pink into the foundation, and apply powder with ingredients that prevent dullness. Plus I really use pink as a base for the blush. So when I wear the mask, it looks like this. So the eye area doesn't look too surprising. The mask looks like this. Tinted lipstick will stick, of course. Lipstick definitely will stick, so often you don't need to apply much, but I think the foundation and such don't stick much, so that's fine. So I apply a little lipstick when I take the mask off. To sum up, summer mask makeup really tends to bring out dark spots, enlarged pores, and dullness. So to suppress facial inflammation, you need to moisturize well, boost your skin barrier, and prevent dullness. So make sure to use vitamin C, tranexamic acid, chamomile ET, and palmitic acid retinol in your skincare routine. Plus, to prevent dullness, you add pink through foundation, primer, and blush, which creates transparency and prevents dullness through the pink effect. There are also powders with ingredients that prevent dullness, so using those can help prevent dullness. Summer skincare and mask makeup have become necessary. Really, the rainy season will end soon and it will get hot, UV rays will get stronger and stronger, but it seems like we'll continue wearing masks for quite a while longer, so I'd be happy if you'd try this approach. Skincare is really important. Not just makeup. So try to think about skincare and makeup as one integrated approach. How was that?
