Hello everyone, this is Tomori Ara. Today I'd like to talk about aging, which I know is a topic many of you are interested in. You probably think of aging as something that brings visible changes, right? Actually, the mechanisms behind these aging-related changes are becoming clearer and clearer these days. So today, I want to share with you the latest aging research and the cutting-edge approaches being developed to address it. I also had my own blood drawn today to find out how many senescent cells are in my body, and I'll reveal the results at the end of this video. Honestly, I don't know the results yet myself, so please watch until the end. Now, when most people hear the word "aging," they probably picture things like spots and wrinkles. But actually, before those visible changes appear, changes are already occurring at the cellular level. "Aging by years" (kareii) and "biological aging" (roka) are slightly different concepts. Kareii simply means accumulating years, while roka refers to the phenomenon where the functions of cells and tissues gradually change over time. In the recent medical world, there's a concept called the "Hallmarks of Aging," through which the causes of aging are being clarified one by one. Various causes contribute to this process of roka, as opposed to simple kareii. For example, mitochondrial mutations and chronic inflammation are among them, and many skincare brands are researching this area as well. Among these, one area receiving particular attention is change at the cellular level — namely, research into what's known as senescent cells. Senescent cells are cells that, due to various stresses or damage, can no longer divide. Normally, these cells would naturally be eliminated, but instead they linger in the body. They cause the surrounding cells to also become senescent one after another, disrupting normal cellular function. It's like having one rotten orange in a box — the surrounding oranges gradually go bad too. In the same way, once senescent cells appear, they cause more and more surrounding cells to become senescent as well. The XPRIZE Foundation is hosting a competition related to aging, and the prize money is a whopping $100 million. Over 600 teams from 58 countries around the world are participating. And here's something that really gives me hope — a Japanese team has made it to the semifinals! Japanese teams and researchers are truly amazing. Another impressive thing is that FANCL has been providing products to that team. Isn't that incredible too? FANCL made a remarkable discovery in this field. What was it, exactly? They discovered an ingredient that reduces senescent cells. This was quite a big topic at the time — I remember seeing it on the evening news — so I imagine many of you are curious about it too. Reducing senescent cells sounds pretty exciting, doesn't it? But I wanted to know more about what this ingredient actually is and how it works, so today I've invited a researcher from FANCL to join us. This is Mr. Yazaki, a researcher at FANCL. Thank you for joining us. So, it reduces senescent cells, right? Yes. We examined about 4,000 different materials one by one, and among them, we discovered that a component unique to a plant called Kinmizuhiki (Agrimonia) acts on accumulated senescent cells and reduces them. That's amazing. When you found out that this was it, weren't you incredibly happy? There was definitely a spark of excitement. I heard that Kinmizuhiki was originally something you noticed was promising while researching something else entirely. What kind of research were you originally doing? Actually, at first we were researching ingredients to support brain function, and during that research, Kinmizuhiki showed very good data. So we began to suspect that Kinmizuhiki might be effective not just for brain function, but more broadly for aging as well. As a result, we arrived at a compound called Agrimol, and discovered that it plays a major role in reducing senescent cells. I understand it's a wonderful ingredient, but let me ask a slightly tricky question. You found that senescent cells decrease, but they're invisible to the eye. How did you determine that they were actually decreasing? That was exactly the biggest challenge in this research. First, we needed to accurately measure how many senescent cells exist in the body in the first place — that was the difficult part. That makes sense. The concept of reducing senescent cells itself only started being proposed around the 2010s, so it's a relatively new idea. Because of that, there weren't many established methods for evaluating it in humans, so we had to start by establishing the method itself. This time, we established a method for measuring how many senescent cells are present in human blood. Did you actually test this on people? Yes, we conducted it as a clinical trial on humans. Being able to properly verify this in humans and discover a measurement method — that's an incredible achievement. Using this technology, we quantified what percentage of CD8-positive T cells in the blood of Japanese subjects were senescent cells. This time, we confirmed that the proportion of senescent cells actually increases with age among Japanese people, and we also verified whether senescent cells decrease after actually ingesting Kinmizuhiki. We were able to carry this all the way through to completion. Conducting such solid data collection in humans — and Japanese subjects at that — is truly wonderful. If there's a way to measure it, I'd love to try it myself. Yes! So today, we specially arranged for FANCL to draw my blood and measure how many senescent cells are in my body. Could you share the results with me now? Alright, we will now announce Dr. Tomori's measurement results. Please read the room a little, okay? Just kidding. Here are the results of the aging index measured from your blood. This time, the proportion of senescent cells showed a slightly elevated tendency. Just slightly — really just a little bit. This is the data from a past clinical trial, and your results are plotted alongside it. These small dots represent data from each individual. There's quite a range, isn't there? Yes, there's a lot of individual variation. The average is represented by this green dot. By the way, the average is around 62.3, and mine is 69.8, so that's a difference of about 2.5. Senescent cells are said to increase not only due to the effects of aging, but also due to chronic inflammation and oxidative stress. So things like sleep deprivation, excessive stress, and sudden spikes in blood sugar — improving these factors is very important for controlling and preventing an increase in senescent cells. Maybe I've been taking too many bullet trains and flights lately. Yeah, that must be it. Of course, as expected, suppressing inflammation and oxidative stress from within the body helps keep senescent cells in check. Starting today, I'll be more mindful — I'll go home and sleep right after this. Thank you. However, it's not something that can be reduced through exercise alone, so cellular-level care is likely to become more common going forward. So that means care from the inside is gradually becoming the standard approach, right? When we focus on the changes brought about by aging, we want to support the condition of middle-aged and older individuals from within. That's why FANCL continues to advance its research on aging. Finally, could you share your passionate thoughts about FANCL's aging research? First and foremost, we have a strong desire to eliminate the worries people have about growing older. Rather than viewing aging negatively, we hope for a world where people can remain light on their feet, staying cheerful and active even after retiring from their main careers — that's the kind of future that excites us. It's true, many people remain wonderfully energetic even after retirement, and I hope that number keeps growing. FANCL's passionate dedication to aging research really moved me today. Thank you so much, Mr. Yazaki. FANCL has released many other things as well, so please be sure to check them out. Thank you for watching until the end today. I'll see you in the next video. Goodbye!
