Hello everyone, this is Arata Tomori. Although it's still hot, August is gradually approaching the end, and summer is coming to a close. Our skin actually needs different care depending on the season, so today I want to explain in detail from a dermatologist's perspective the skincare you absolutely must do at the end of summer. Please watch until the end. First, when you think of summer, you probably think of UV rays. Of course, in my previous videos, I've mentioned many times that UV damage causes skin damage, and that 70% of skin aging is photoaging from UV exposure, so you probably already know this. However, summer has two other factors besides high UV exposure that cause trouble: sebum and dryness. You might think it's strange to mention dryness in summer, but surprisingly, summer actually causes dryness. According to SK-II data, even though summer might seem unrelated to dryness, air conditioning indoors creates a dry environment even when it's hot outside. Additionally, many people experience sleep deprivation in summer. I'm sure many of you can relate. Summer has more outings and longer daylight hours, so sleep tends to be insufficient. When you lack sleep, your skin's moisture levels decrease, and combined with sebum troubles, this causes dryness. So surprisingly, summer is actually a season where skin becomes dry. Now, about the sebum I mentioned earlier. You know how sebum increases in summer, right? Even people with dry skin experience increased sebum production. An important point here is that sweat and sebum are different. Sweat comes from sweat glands, while sebum comes from sebaceous glands. People with oily skin have higher sebum production or more active sebaceous activity, while people with dry skin have lower production or less active glands. However, regardless of skin type, when certain conditions are met, sebum secretion increases. That condition is temperature rise. Summer brings higher temperatures, so everyone experiences increased sebum production. While sebum does cause pore dilation, the scariest thing about sebum is that it causes skin inflammation. You might be surprised to hear this, but when sebum is left on the skin, it converts to free fatty acids. These free fatty acids are known to cause skin damage. So whether you have normal, dry, or oily skin, summer brings increased sebum production, so in addition to your regular care, you need sebum care. Everyone experiences sebum-induced inflammation, UV-induced inflammation, and dryness-induced inflammation, so inflammatory care becomes necessary. In summary, summer accumulates damage from dryness, sun damage, and sebum, all of which create inflammatory damage. At the end of summer, you need to do two things: suppress inflammation and control sebum. Specifically, for anti-inflammatory care, you might think of tranexamic acid, glycyrrhizic acid, or vitamin C, but these treat inflammation in the epidermis, the outer layer of skin. However, summer also causes inflammation deeper in the skin—at the basement membrane level. The basement membrane lies between the epidermis and dermis, at the very bottom of the epidermis where it connects to the dermis. This is now receiving significant attention because new cells are born from the basal layer and become epidermal cells. When UV rays or dryness damage the basement membrane, skin cell turnover worsens. When the basement membrane is damaged, its attachment to the dermis weakens, causing separation, which is known to cause sagging. So protecting the basement membrane is key. While this is also inflammatory care, the focus is on treating basement membrane inflammation and providing basement membrane care. While vitamin C, tranexamic acid, and glycyrrhizic acid treat epidermal inflammation, basement membrane care is an area where Japanese research, particularly by Shiseido, has advanced significantly. Shiseido has researched basement membrane care since the early 2000s. D-amino acids found in Aqua Label products support basement membrane care. Kanebo's Lisage, with its Bistorta extract found in Skin Maintenaizer, supports type IV collagen production in the basement membrane. Rohto's Obagi series also focuses on type IV collagen and basement membrane care in its September renewal. Additionally, oligopeptide-6, found in many products, is known to support basement membrane care. For example, Environ's Sequence series contains these ingredients. So basically, you need anti-inflammatory care using vitamin C, tranexamic acid, and glycyrrhizic acid, which also provides whitening benefits, plus basement membrane care at summer's end. For sebum care, people with dry skin often don't know how to proceed. Of course, over-washing is bad, so people with oily or normal skin should do enzymatic exfoliation once or twice weekly and proper morning cleansing. For dry skin, you don't want to over-wash since it removes not just sebum but also hydrating components. Instead, use products with less cleansing power but effective sebum control. Carbonated cleansing is recommended. Carbonated cleansing works without relying heavily on cleansing agents—it's proven to remove dirt and sebum. Curel and Rohto's carbonated foaming cleansers have lower cleansing power but use carbonation to lift dirt and sebum, washing them away easily. Carbonation also improves blood circulation, promoting skin cell turnover and increasing hydration rather than sebum. So if you have dry skin and want sebum care, try carbonated cleansing morning and night. In summary: at summer's end, focus on inflammatory care, dividing it into epidermal and basement membrane care. Continue sebum care—for oily and normal skin, add enzymatic exfoliation or peeling once or twice weekly and always cleanse in the morning. For dry skin, enzymatic exfoliation once every one or two weeks is fine, but if you're worried about dryness, switch your morning and evening cleansing to carbonated cleansing. Carbonation removes dirt and sebum without heavy cleansing agents and creates hydration. Summer really challenges skin with UV rays, dryness, and sebum, making inflammation more likely. Without proper care at summer's end, winter's intense dryness will accelerate damage further. As mentioned in a previous video, summer ages us. So please give proper care at summer's end. That's all for today's somewhat lengthy video. Thank you for watching until the end. If you found today's content helpful, please give it a thumbs up or comment with topics you'd like me to cover. See you in the next video. Goodbye!
