Hello everyone, I'm Yuri Nitta. In one of my previous videos titled 'Don't Eat These! 5 Foods That Age Your Body,' which has received over 2 million views, I talked about how the root cause of aging is inflammation. There are two types of inflammation: acute inflammation, which causes sudden redness and itching, and chronic inflammation, which is a slow, silent process you can barely notice. The more dangerous of the two is chronic inflammation. That video resonated with many people because I introduced foods that help suppress this chronic inflammation. But today, I want to focus not just on the body internally, but specifically on the skin. The same principles apply to skin, but with skin, both acute and chronic inflammation are equally concerning. I'll explain both in detail and discuss how to address them, so please watch until the end.
Many of you watching already know that skin inflammation is what causes skin aging. I've been saying this for a long time, and I always emphasize three things to avoid: friction, dryness, and UV exposure. I even wrote a book about it three or four years ago called 'Stop Inflammation and Solve All Your Skin Problems,' so I've been advocating against skin inflammation for quite some time.
Now, among these three, are they all causes of acute inflammation? Friction and dryness tend to cause acute inflammation. However, UV radiation is particularly problematic because it triggers both acute and chronic inflammation. With friction and dryness, you can physically feel it — rubbing your skin causes stinging and redness. While this can progress to chronic inflammation if it continues, you're generally aware of what's happening. With UV radiation, however, the situation is different. Not only does it cause acute inflammation and stinging, but it also flips a switch that keeps sending inflammation signals even after the surface-level acute inflammation has resolved. This means that deep within the skin, an inflammation loop continues, which becomes chronic inflammation and leads to dark spots, wrinkles, and sagging.
Summer is when UV exposure is highest, so acute inflammation is more likely, and as it accumulates and becomes chronic inflammation, you'll often notice your skin looking more aged as autumn arrives. This year, in addition to UV exposure, we also have the issue of wearing masks. The inside of a mask becomes moist, but when you take it off, it causes dryness and friction, leading to acute inflammation and, over time, chronic inflammation. So we really need to address both types of inflammation in our skin, especially during a masked summer.
With that in mind, I want to introduce two remarkable products I've discovered for dealing with this issue.
The first is COVERMARK's Capsule T1 supplement. You might be surprised it's a supplement, but I was truly impressed by COVERMARK's approach. COVERMARK is produced by Pias Corporation, a large company with an excellent research background. COVERMARK focused on the connection between UV-induced acute inflammation and the inflammatory signals that lead to chronic inflammation deep in the skin, and developed a supplement containing ingredients to target both. The key feature of this supplement is that it addresses both acute and chronic inflammation.
For acute inflammation, the active ingredient is crocin, a type of carotenoid found in gardenia fruit and commonly used in spices. When taken internally, crocin helps suppress the acute inflammation triggered by UV exposure. Here's how it works: UV rays trigger the production of prostaglandins, inflammatory substances that cause acute inflammation. Crocin blocks this process. It also inhibits tyrosinase, the enzyme responsible for melanin production. Additionally, as a carotenoid, crocin has strong antioxidant properties, helping to neutralize the reactive oxygen species (free radicals) generated by UV exposure. In this way, crocin provides comprehensive protection against acute inflammation.
For chronic inflammation, the key ingredient is Linden (Tilia) extract — specifically an extract from winter linden flowers, which is a type of polyphenol. What's remarkable about this ingredient is that it was discovered through a collaborative study with Osaka University. Pias Corporation and Osaka University researchers studied how to suppress chronic inflammation and found that bone marrow stem cells play a role in doing so. These multipotent stem cells, found primarily in bone marrow, respond to signals from chronically inflamed areas. When chronic inflammation occurs, a signal is sent to the bone marrow, prompting these stem cells to travel via the bloodstream to the site of damage. Since we can't directly inject bone marrow stem cells into the skin, researchers looked for something that could encourage more stem cells to be mobilized in response to chronic inflammation signals — and they found that Linden extract does exactly that. It amplifies the recruitment of bone marrow stem cells when chronic inflammation occurs.
This supplement truly targets both acute and chronic inflammation, which is why I started taking it regularly in June.
The second product is for those who want a topical skincare solution: Shiseido's Ultimune. This too is the result of remarkable scientific research. I believe it first launched in 2014. Ultimune focuses on skin immunity — essentially the skin's ability to suppress inflammation when it occurs. Shiseido developed this in collaboration with the Cutaneous Biology Research Center (CBRC) at Massachusetts General Hospital, beginning joint research in 2000. The result of over a decade of collaboration was Ultimune, launched in 2014.
The original focus was on Langerhans cells — immune cells in the skin that migrate to sites of damage and suppress inflammation. As we age, these cells lose their potency, so the first version of Ultimune included ingredients to boost their power. In 2018, it was reformulated to also increase the number of Langerhans cells, enhancing both their strength and quantity. In 2020, it was reformulated again to include ingredients that improve blood circulation, which in turn enhances immune function. And in 2021, it was reformulated yet again.
This latest version adds a focus on Natural Killer (NK) cells — another type of immune cell, part of the lymphocyte family. You may have heard that laughing increases NK cell activity and helps suppress cancer. If Langerhans cells are like a commander calling the plays, NK cells are like the striker who goes in and scores. By increasing both the commander and the striker, the skin's immune response is greatly enhanced. When inflammation is detected, Langerhans cells identify it and direct NK cells to attack.
Research has shown that skin cells damaged by inflammation and undergoing aging begin to emit signals that perpetuate chronic inflammation — a phenomenon referred to as 'skin zombification.' This was even published in the journal Nature around 2017. It was also found that Langerhans cells and NK cells play a role in suppressing these zombie-like chronically inflamed cells. So if these immune cells are functioning well and present in sufficient numbers, they can suppress the chronic inflammation signals coming from zombie cells.
Since Ultimune already contained ingredients to boost Langerhans cell numbers and potency, the new formulation adds fermented hibiscus extract to activate NK cells. The concept is: when skin is damaged by UV rays, pollution, or dryness, and zombie-like cells begin sending out chronic inflammation signals to neighboring cells, Langerhans cells detect the threat and NK cells move in to eliminate it.
It's clear that chronic inflammation is a major focus across the skincare industry, with companies approaching it from many different angles. While diet plays an important role in managing inflammation, the world of skincare is also placing increasing emphasis on suppressing both acute and chronic inflammation. There are also reports that COVERMARK will soon be releasing a serum focused on chronic inflammation.
As we enter a season when inflammation is especially prone to occur, let's make sure to address it both from the inside and outside — suppressing both acute and chronic inflammation to prevent skin aging. Today's video ran a bit long, but thank you so much for watching to the end. If you found this helpful, please give it a like and subscribe. See you in the next video. Goodbye!
