Hello everyone! I'm Arata Tomori, an internal medicine and dermatologist. Most of you probably know that drinking water is good for your skin, but do you really understand why and how? Today, I'll take a deep dive into the relationship between water, beautiful skin, and overall health. First and foremost, water is absolutely essential for our bodies. More than half of our body is made up of water, and prolonged dehydration can be life-threatening. Staying hydrated is critical for survival. When it comes to improving skin hydration, drinking water is the quickest and most effective approach. Adequate hydration directly raises your skin's moisture levels, while dehydration causes them to drop. Drinking water regularly is truly beneficial for healthy, beautiful skin. ■How Much Water Should You Drink Per Day? You may have heard that you should drink 2 liters of water a day, but this can actually be too much for some people. From a medical perspective, the recommended daily water intake is calculated as body weight (kg) × 40ml. For a person weighing 50kg, that comes out to about 2 liters. However, this total includes water obtained from food. Since fruits, vegetables, and other foods contain moisture, the amount you need to drink as plain water is generally around 1 to 1.5 liters per day, depending on your lifestyle. Drinking a full 2 liters may be excessive in some cases. Exceptions include exercising in hot weather, preventing heatstroke, or eating very little food, in which case more water may be needed. ■How to Drink Water Avoid gulping down large amounts at once. Drinking too much too quickly can dilute stomach acid and slow digestion, or cause diarrhea by flooding the intestines. Instead, aim to drink half to one cup of water every hour throughout the day. ■Water Temperature The ideal temperature of your water depends on the season and how you're feeling. The aorta, the main artery that circulates blood throughout the body, runs just behind the stomach. Warm drinks heat the aorta and raise your body temperature, while cold drinks lower it. · When you wake up or want to warm your body: drink warm water or warm beverages. · When you feel overheated or it's very hot outside: drink cold water to cool down quickly. There's no rule that says you must always drink warm water or must avoid cold water. Simply adjust the temperature to suit your situation. ■Does Drinking Water Cause Swelling? Swelling (edema) falls into two categories: medical edema and cosmetic edema. Medical edema is caused by reduced kidney function and presents as pitting edema (where pressed skin stays indented). This requires a diagnosis from a physician. Cosmetic edema, such as sock marks on the ankles, is primarily caused by protein deficiency. When protein intake is insufficient, albumin levels in the blood drop. Albumin regulates the balance of fluid between the inside and outside of blood vessels, so when it decreases, fluid leaks out of the vessels and causes swelling. Rather than restricting water intake, those prone to swelling should review their diet and exercise habits to ensure they're getting enough protein and maintaining adequate muscle mass. ■Water Ingredients Mineral water typically contains calcium, magnesium, and silica, among other minerals. Japanese tap water also contains various minerals, so it shouldn't be underestimated. There's no single water that is universally best. Here's a quick overview of key ingredients: · Silica: Expected to promote blood circulation and improve skin elasticity. Also found in Tokyo tap water. · Magnesium: Used in laxatives, it draws water into the intestines and softens stools, making it helpful for constipation. Since Japanese tap water is soft (low in minerals), those who want more magnesium should choose mineral water with a higher magnesium content. · Calcium: Water with very high calcium content is classified as hard water and can be difficult to drink. Choose based on taste and drinkability. · Sparkling water: Carbonation aids digestion and is beneficial when consumed before meals. It also promotes a sense of fullness. ■Summary Water is genuinely good for both your skin and your overall health. Aim to drink 1 to 1.5 liters per day in small sips throughout the day. Adjust the temperature based on the season and how you feel, and don't worry too much about which specific type of water you choose. Select one that you enjoy and can drink consistently, whether it contains magnesium, silica, or carbonation, and make hydration a daily habit.
