Hello everyone, I'm Chia, a physician specializing in internal medicine and dermatology. Today, I'd like to clear up five common misconceptions about skin whitening and brightening that many people believe or practice incorrectly. Proper knowledge is essential for effective skin care, so please watch until the end.
【Misconception 1】Skin whitening care can make your skin whiter than your natural skin tone
Everyone has a different natural skin tone — some people are very fair, while others have a more tan complexion. This is determined by the amount of melanin you were born with. No matter how much effort someone with naturally higher melanin levels puts in, it is simply not possible to achieve a drastically lighter complexion.
You may have seen before-and-after stories in beauty magazines where someone claims to have gone from very dark skin to fair skin. In most cases, those individuals were naturally fair-skinned to begin with and had simply become tanned from sun exposure. To understand your own natural skin tone, check areas that are rarely exposed to the sun, such as the inside of your upper arm or your abdomen. If those areas look similar to your face, your whitening care is likely already working effectively.
【Misconception 2】Cosmetics can remove dark spots
Many people wonder, "But my product says it's a whitening cosmetic — doesn't that mean it removes spots?" The official definition of a whitening cosmetic, however, is a product that suppresses melanin production after UV exposure and reduces dullness — in other words, it prevents future spots from forming. Some products also offer a brightening effect by promoting skin cell turnover to improve transparency.
Removing existing dark spots is only possible through medical treatment. If you have spots you want to eliminate, cosmetics alone won't do it — please consider laser therapy, light-based treatments, or other aesthetic medical procedures. That said, whitening cosmetics are still valuable for preventing existing spots from darkening further and stopping new spots from forming nearby. Any online advertisement claiming that spots can "fall off" with a cosmetic product is simply not scientifically possible.
【Misconception 3】Using whitening cosmetics alone is enough for brightening and whitening effects
This is also a misconception. While whitening cosmetics suppress melanin production, effective skin brightening also requires promoting skin cell turnover through proper moisturization.
Think back to when you were a child — you probably got a very dark tan in summer, but by autumn or winter, your skin naturally returned to its original tone. This happens because a healthy skin turnover cycle allows melanin to be shed along with old skin cells. To maintain this cycle, it's essential to moisturize properly and keep your skin barrier strong. When the stratum corneum (the outermost skin layer) is well-hydrated, dead skin cells shed smoothly and the skin can properly signal new cell production. Poor moisturization disrupts this cycle and slows down turnover.
The correct approach to skin whitening combines three steps: ① suppressing melanin production with whitening cosmetics, ② strengthening the skin barrier through moisturization, and ③ promoting turnover through gentle exfoliation (such as peeling or exfoliating toners).
【Misconception 4】You should start whitening care immediately after getting sunburned
Many people think, "I got sunburned today — I need to start whitening care right away!" However, this requires caution. Sunburn is essentially a mild burn — it causes inflammation in the skin. Applying potent whitening ingredients while inflammation is still active can actually worsen the condition.
If you experience any of the following — persistent redness, a sensation of heat, or stinging pain — your skin needs more than cosmetic-grade ingredients. It requires medical-grade treatment to control the inflammation. The correct approach is: first, cool the affected area; then, once the inflammation has subsided, restore the skin barrier with moisturizer; and only after that, begin whitening care. Be especially careful about introducing new whitening products immediately after a sunburn.
【Misconception 5】You should not apply Vitamin C in the morning
This is a clear myth. It likely stems from the fact that citrus fruits contain a compound called psoralen, which has photosensitizing properties and can trigger hyperpigmentation — leading to the mistaken belief that "citrus = Vitamin C = applying it in the morning causes dark spots." However, Vitamin C in skincare products has nothing to do with psoralen.
In fact, Vitamin C is a ingredient you should actively use in the morning. It has powerful antioxidant properties that neutralize free radicals (reactive oxygen species) generated by UV exposure. It also helps suppress inflammation and inhibit melanin production signals. The most effective time to apply Vitamin C is before sun exposure, so that it is already present in your skin when UV rays hit. If you have a Vitamin C lotion or serum, make it part of your morning routine.
Finally, no matter how diligently you practice skin whitening care, it will be ineffective if you leave your skin unprotected from UV rays. The most fundamental step in preventing dark spots and dullness is wearing sunscreen every day. Apply sunscreen consistently and incorporate these five key points into your skincare routine for the best results.
