Transcript (English)
Hello everyone, I'm Arata Tomori, an internal medicine and dermatologist.
As I wrote in the thumbnail, thank you all so much for everything up until now. Today, March 19th, marks the one-year anniversary of my YouTube channel. Last year, on March 19th, 2020, I uploaded my very first video about pollen dermatitis. It's hard to believe a whole year has passed already - it feels like it went by in an instant, yet also like it was just recently. I have complicated feelings about it that I can't quite put into words.
That very first video last year was filmed at my clinic. My manager set up the camera and I just talked in front of it. But within a month, a state of emergency was declared, and I could no longer film at the clinic, so I suddenly had to start filming at home. I had no idea how to set up a camera, so I learned by watching and imitating others, doing it all at home. At first, I planned to upload twice a week, but gradually, thanks to all of you watching, my subscriber count and view count grew, and now I'm able to upload five times a week.
When I first started, I think I was only getting about 200 views a day. Reaching 1,000 views felt like an impossible dream. For the first month or so, I really struggled - my subscriber count wasn't growing at all, and I had no idea what kind of videos people would actually enjoy watching.
Thankfully, when I uploaded a video called "Top 3 Affordable Whitening Serums," that's when things really took off - my view count jumped dramatically for the first time. Thanks to that, people started watching my previous videos more too. Combined with the state of emergency and everyone staying home, and more people using YouTube in general, it was really a series of lucky breaks that led to where my channel is today.
So the fact that I've been able to continue this YouTube channel for a whole year is truly thanks to all of you. From the bottom of my heart, thank you so much.
Thanks to my growing subscriber base, I upgraded from an iPhone to a DSLR camera, and then upgraded that camera as well. I went from having zero interest in cameras to learning so much about them - it's been a year of real growth. In the beginning, I did all the editing myself, and there were mistakes in subtitles or missing captions, but now I'm able to have professionals handle the editing, which has been wonderful.
The number of videos I've uploaded has now surpassed 200. I never imagined I'd be able to make that many. For this channel, I do everything myself - coming up with topics, planning what to say, all of it. Thanks to that, I've actually gone through three notebooks of ideas over the past year. Looking back at my very first notebook, you might think "who uses paper notebooks these days?" but it's filled with all my thoughts and struggles from this past year. I actually have another notebook too, and as this collection of ideas keeps growing, so does my knowledge, my speaking style, and the content I share with you. I want to keep improving day by day.
The reason I started YouTube in the first place was because I wanted to explain beauty and health topics to everyone in an easy-to-understand way. Until then, I had mainly appeared in magazines and on TV, but I wanted to reach even more people - that was my motivation. That feeling hasn't changed at all, and I want to keep doing this going forward.
I really started out feeling my way through it, not very good at speaking in an engaging way. But over this past year, I've watched a lot more YouTube myself, found YouTubers I really like, and seen all sorts of fun content formats emerge. Even though it gets some criticism, the "I Want to Save Them" series has become one of my personal favorite types of content to make. Of course, opinions are divided, but I hope that through watching it, people can get a sense of who I am, and that it can serve as a little health and beauty tip for everyone.
Recently, I've been fortunate to collaborate with many different people. Most recently, I got to work with Risa Sekine, whom I had been watching for a long time, and also with Sumisho-san, whom I had used as a benchmark. Since YouTube usually means talking to the camera alone, having someone there with you is incredibly reassuring - I really felt that.
Beyond YouTubers, I've also been able to collaborate with celebrities like Barbie-san, and Dr. Nishikawa even agreed to appear in a video. I really feel like my circle of connections has grown. Going forward, I want to keep bringing you new projects and more collaborations, so please look forward to that.
Also, though this wasn't a collaboration, when I featured Yuki Kashiwagi-san in my "I Want to Save Them" series - a series I personally love - I later ran into her at a magazine photoshoot, and she told me, "Thank you, Sensei," and we even took a photo together. And get this - that YouTube video actually became a book! Kashiwagi-san even wrote the obi (belly band) for the book. Just having it become a book felt like a dream come true, but having a national idol like her write the obi was truly astonishing. It made me think, it really is worth putting yourself out there and uploading videos.
I've only been talking about the good things, but there were truly difficult times too. Honestly, I struggled with what to upload, videos that just wouldn't get views, and being told things like "you're a doctor, why are you doing this," which really got me down sometimes. There were a few times - not many, but a few - over this past year when I genuinely wondered if I should quit YouTube, whether this wasn't right for me, or whether it was just too much for me to handle. But even if there was one hurtful comment that stung a little, there were always many, many more supportive comments, comments saying "I'm glad I watched your video, Sensei." Reading those comments encouraged me and kept me going, in my own way. YouTube really is different from the magazines and TV I'd done before - it has wonderful sides and truly harsh sides, and I think this has been a year of real personal growth for me.
Also, people used to tell me things like "I watch you on TV" or "I read your blog" or "I follow you on Instagram," but recently, I've been hearing "I watch your YouTube channel" so much more often. And it's not just young people - people in their 60s, even around their 70s, people of all ages, genders, and backgrounds, of course including young boys and girls in high school too, have been reaching out to me. That really makes me happy.
This has turned into a rather rambling video, but I just want to say - thank you so much for watching the Tomori Ara channel this past year. And don't worry, I'm definitely not quitting YouTube. I'm going to keep going. My goal is that next year, on March 19th, I'll be able to say "today marks year two," and the year after that, "year three," and so on. I'll keep working hard toward that. If you're willing, please continue subscribing to my channel, and please tell your friends, relatives, people at school, PTA members, and anyone else about this channel. If everyone spreads the word and subscribes, it would make me even happier and give me more motivation to keep going. Thank you so much in advance.
So that's it for today. Since I haven't really talked about beauty or health topics in this video, I won't do my usual sign-off phrase this time. But please continue to support me for another year. This has been Ara Tomori. See you in the next video.
