3 / The 3 Best Inexpensive Lotion Products Chosen by Dermatologists

Hello everyone. I'm Arata Tomori, an internal medicine and dermatologist physician. Today, I'll be sharing my top 3 budget-friendly ("petit prix") toners chosen from a doctor's perspective. Last time I covered serums, so this time I'm focusing on toners. I'll be introducing three products I highly recommend, so please watch until the end.
Let's get right into it. My top 3 are: Melano CC, Chifure, and Aqua Label. I truly think all three of these are outstanding. Let me go through each one.
First, let's talk about Melano CC and Chifure together, since both are vitamin C-based products. Both are whitening toners, but the types of vitamin C they contain differ. As I mentioned in my previous video on serums, the Melano CC serum contains pure vitamin C (not a derivative), but the Melano CC toner contains a vitamin C derivative. Similarly, Chifure contains a vitamin C derivative, though a different one.
Specifically, Melano CC contains ethyl ascorbic acid, while Chifure contains ascorbyl glucoside. Both are water-soluble, but ethyl ascorbic acid (found in Melano CC) is considered to have slightly higher activity and is said to be more effective at suppressing melanin production. In terms of whitening efficacy, it's hard to choose between the two, but Melano CC has a slight edge.
On the other hand, Chifure contains additional beneficial ingredients beyond its whitening component, including dipotassium glycyrrhizate (an anti-irritation ingredient), trehalose, and hyaluronic acid for moisturization. For those with sensitive skin who experience tingling or irritation from whitening products, Chifure is a reassuring option. It's also very affordable, making it great for those who want to apply it generously.
Melano CC also contains dipotassium glycyrrhizate for quick-acting anti-inflammatory benefits, as well as ingredients to help prevent acne. It is therefore well-suited for those dealing with both acne and concerns about hyperpigmentation or post-acne marks. As a general guideline: Melano CC is better for acne-prone or oilier skin types and younger users, while Chifure is more appropriate for dry or sensitive skin and those in their late 20s and beyond.
The product that impressed me most, however, is Aqua Label. Marketed for "spot prevention, dryness, and aging care," this toner does not contain vitamin C unlike Melano CC and Chifure. Instead, it uses tranexamic acid as its whitening ingredient. Tranexamic acid works by blocking the signals sent to the skin to produce melanin when exposed to UV rays, making it especially recommended for those who are frequently exposed to sunlight.
What also caught my attention is an ingredient listed for "firmness and radiance": palmitate retinol, a derivative of vitamin A. Like vitamin C, vitamin A is a key ingredient I strongly recommend incorporating into your anti-aging routine. While vitamin C focuses on brightening and antioxidant protection, vitamin A helps improve skin firmness and elasticity. Palmitate retinol is considered a "protective form" of vitamin A, meaning it does not cause the redness or peeling sometimes associated with retinol. Its effects are gradual, but with continued use it can help improve skin firmness and radiance from within, while also supporting collagen production. It is also said to offer some SPF-like protective effect when applied in the morning, making it an excellent choice for those who want to address UV exposure, skin firmness, and spot prevention all at once.
To summarize, the top 3 budget toners chosen from a doctor's perspective are:
• Melano CC Medicated Spot-Care Whitening Lotion
• Chifure Whitening Lotion VC
• Aqua Label Bouncing Care Lotion M
Here's how to choose: If you're in your 40s or older, frequently exposed to UV rays, and want whitening along with anti-aging, firming, and anti-sagging benefits, go with Aqua Label. If you have sensitive skin but still want whitening benefits, go with Chifure Whitening Lotion. If you have acne-prone skin with concerns about post-acne hyperpigmentation, UV exposure, and whitening all at once, try Melano CC Medicated Spot-Care Whitening Lotion.
Budget skincare products are truly not to be underestimated. They're packed with impressive ingredients and all available for around 1,000 yen or less. While I love high-end department store cosmetics too, looking at products from an ingredient-focused perspective really shows just how impressive affordable skincare can be.
