Hello everyone, this is Tomoni Nitta. Today I'd like to explain some basic skincare questions that you might feel are "too late to ask." Since I've been doing YouTube for a long time, I often introduce the latest cosmetics or talk about ingredients. However, I've noticed many comments and live chat messages saying things like "I'm embarrassed to ask this now, but..." or "This might be a basic question, but..." So today, I want to compile some of these fundamental questions. I hope this video helps you with things you may have wondered about but never got around to asking. Please watch until the end. 【Question 1: Do I need to use all of toner, essence, milky lotion, and cream?】 This is a very common question. To be honest, I don't think you need to use all of them, and in fact, I myself don't use all of them. Skincare basically consists of cleansing, face washing, toner, essence, milky lotion, and cream. The reason we do skincare after washing our face is for moisturizing. Moisturizing means giving your skin water and then sealing it in. Toner provides the water, and either milky lotion or cream can be used to seal it in — I believe just one of these is enough. Of course, this doesn't mean you can never use both — there are times when both are necessary — but that's not an everyday requirement. Both milky lotion and cream add oil to the skin, but cream contains more oil and has a richer texture than milky lotion. For example, if your skin isn't very dry that day, milky lotion alone is fine. If it feels drier, you can add cream on top, or use cream alone. Age also matters. For those who start skincare in their teens or early twenties, cream may not be necessary for many people. Unless you have very dry skin, younger skin tends to produce its own oil, so milky lotion alone is often sufficient. If you have very oily skin prone to acne, toner alone might even be enough. As for essence, it should be used if you have a specific concern — such as wanting to whiten your skin, reduce pore visibility, or prevent sagging. It's not something you absolutely must use. The basics of skincare are: cleanse, add water, and seal it in. As long as you're doing these three steps, you don't need to use every single product. 【Question 2: What order should I apply skincare products?】 This is another common question. Generally, the order is toner → essence → milky lotion → cream. However, some brands use a "milky lotion first" approach. Setting that aside for now, the general rule is to apply products from the lightest texture to the richest. Toner has the lightest texture, so you apply it first to add water, then essence to deliver active ingredients, followed by milky lotion or cream. However, some essences are quite rich and may serve the same purpose as an oil-based product. Generally speaking, though, the order is toner → essence → milky lotion or cream. Also, essence doesn't necessarily need to be applied to your entire face. Watery essences are often used all over, but cream-like or "spot treatment" essences should be applied only to specific areas of concern, like spots or wrinkles. The general rule for application order is to go from lighter to richer textures, but essence doesn't have to be applied to your whole face. Similarly, milky lotion and cream don't need to be applied all over your face either — it's perfectly fine to apply them only to areas that feel dry. I often tell people to "make a map of your face" — apply oil-based products only to the dry areas, and skip areas that don't need it. Many people who struggle with acne ask me whether they need milky lotion or cream. Unless your entire face is covered in acne, the rule is: don't apply oil-heavy products to acne-prone areas, but do apply them elsewhere. This kind of "partial application" approach is worth keeping in mind. 【Question 3: When should I start using essence?】 There's no single correct answer. I believe you should start using essence whenever you notice a concern that bothers you. For example, if you're a teenager worried about pores, using a vitamin C essence is fine. If you're in your twenties and have no particular concerns, you don't need to use one. Even in your thirties or forties, if others notice spots or dullness but you're not bothered by them, there's no need to force yourself to use an essence. Skincare isn't medicine — use it when something bothers you. That said, if you want to prevent things like spots or sagging, it's better to start early as a preventive measure. But if you're not interested in prevention and have no particular concerns, there's no need to force yourself to add an essence. Also, many modern toners, milky lotions, and creams already contain high-performance active ingredients, so they can provide preventive benefits even without a separate essence. If you don't have specific concerns, you don't necessarily need to add an essence. 【Question 4: Will using high-performance products at a young age make my skin "lazy"?】 This is another common question, but the answer is: this is basically not something to worry about. As mentioned earlier, from a prevention standpoint, starting early can be beneficial. If you want to prevent spots before they appear, starting in your late teens or twenties is perfectly fine. Using a whitening essence from your teens won't make it "stop working" by the time you're in your thirties or forties. Since skincare isn't medicine, your skin doesn't develop "tolerance." However, there is one important point to note: skincare products are designed with a specific target age group in mind — for teens, for people in their 20s, 30s, 40s, and beyond. If a teenager uses a product designed for people in their 60s, it likely won't cause major issues, but it may contain ingredients that aren't really necessary for teens — such as ingredients that boost collagen production or firmness. In that sense, such products tend to be more expensive due to their advanced formulations, which may not be a good value for younger users. More importantly, the skin of people in their teens and twenties differs greatly from that of people in their forties and fifties — especially in terms of water and oil (sebum) content. Sebum production decreases significantly with age. As a result, products designed for older skin tend to have richer textures with more oil content. If younger people use these products, the excess oil may cause breakouts. This isn't because the skin "gets lazy" — it's simply due to the higher oil content designed to boost texture and moisture retention. So, it's important to choose products suited to your age group. That said, if you're young but have very dry skin, using high-performance, highly moisturizing products is perfectly fine. Your skin won't become "lazy" from using different ingredients — you can feel reassured about that. Just be mindful that products with a lot of oil could potentially cause breakouts. 【Question 5: Is double cleansing necessary?】 Honestly, I don't think double cleansing is absolutely necessary these days. In the past, oil-based makeup and sunscreen were harder to remove with just one cleanse, but modern cleansing products have improved significantly, and many can now remove everything in a single step. In fact, double cleansing can increase the number of times you wash your face, which may lead to more dryness. So if you don't feel any residue after cleansing, there's no need to force yourself to double cleanse. That said, some cleansing products and cleansers are specifically designed with double cleansing in mind. While I personally don't do double cleansing often and don't necessarily recommend it, following the manufacturer's recommended usage is generally the best approach. So please check whether double cleansing is required for the specific cleanser you've purchased. With cosmetics, it's not just about the ingredients — using them the way the manufacturer intends is also important. Especially for skincare beginners, it's best to start by following the basics and checking what the manufacturer recommends. As you get more familiar with skincare and understand your own skin better — like what causes irritation or dryness — you can then decide for yourself whether to double cleanse or to focus more on thorough moisturizing afterward. As a dermatologist, I personally don't strongly recommend double cleansing, but please follow the manufacturer's guidance, and if you do double cleanse, make sure to moisturize thoroughly afterward. 【Finally: About Moisturizing】 Lastly, I want to talk about moisturizing. This ties back to the earlier question about whether you need to use every skincare product. Moisturizing is about balancing water and oil, and this balance varies greatly from person to person. Some people need plenty of water and just a little oil, others need less water but more oil, and some need a balanced fifty-fifty mix. This can even vary day to day. You don't need to use the same amount every time — it's important to observe your skin's condition and decide how much oil to add after applying toner. Start by properly applying toner to add water, then observe where you need to add oil and how much. This will help you find your own ideal water-oil balance for healthy skin. So instead of using the same amount of everything, please pay attention to where and how much oil to add after applying toner, and adjust your skincare routine accordingly. How was this video? These are pretty basic topics, but I hope you found something new or had an "aha" moment while listening. It's perfectly fine to develop your own personalized skincare routine, but I believe it's best to first understand the basics before customizing it to your needs. That way, if any issues arise, you'll have a solid foundation to return to. So please make sure you understand the basics first, and then build your own routine from there. I hope this was helpful. Thank you for watching until the end today. See you in the next video. Goodbye, and thank you for watching!
