Hello everyone, this is Nitta from Tomo Biyoushi (Tomo Beauty). Today I'd like to introduce three whitening serums that are perfect for this season and offer amazing value for money, so please watch until the end.
The three products I'll introduce today are expected to have additional functions beyond just whitening, which is why I think they truly offer excellent cost performance. Let's get right into the first one.
The first one is Hada Labo Medicated Clear Essence. This is from Hada Labo's 'Shirojun' (White Refine) series, and it's a whitening serum in gel form. Since it's marketed as a whitening product, what are the active whitening ingredients? It says 'White Tranexamic Acid' here, which is essentially tranexamic acid. The other ingredient is a vitamin C derivative called L-ascorbic acid 2-glucoside, which is a water-soluble vitamin C derivative. It also contains vitamin E (tocopherol) and hyaluronic acid.
What makes this so cost-effective? First, tranexamic acid suppresses the inflammatory signal that occurs when UV rays hit the skin—the signal that says 'UV rays are here, it's dangerous, so make melanin (spots)!' By suppressing this inflammation, it prevents spots from forming, which is why it's classified as an active whitening ingredient. Vitamin C similarly suppresses inflammation, and additionally, melanin isn't originally dark—it becomes darker as it matures. Vitamin C helps lighten melanin that has already darkened, which is called 'melanin decolorization' or 'lightening.'
However, as I mentioned, the vitamin C in this product is water-soluble. Since our skin naturally contains oils, water-soluble vitamin C is said to have difficulty penetrating the skin. So I think the main active ingredient here is really tranexamic acid.
This alone might seem fairly standard, but there's another key point in this 'Shirojun Premium Medicated Gel Whitening Serum'—it contains eucalyptus oil. When you hear 'eucalyptus oil,' you might immediately think of its antibacterial or anti-inflammatory properties, often used for acne. However, Rohto Pharmaceutical's research actually discovered that eucalyptus oil has the potential to improve the skin's barrier function.
The key to skin barrier function is having a strong, robust stratum corneum. Between the cells of the stratum corneum, as I always mention, there are natural moisturizing factors that act like cement to hold everything together firmly. Additionally, the areas where cells connect to each other are called 'tight junctions'—the adhesion sites between cells. Various proteins are involved in these tight junctions. The one you've probably heard of most is filaggrin. Really, many different proteins work together to properly adhere cells to each other, which is what makes the stratum corneum strong and cohesive.
Among the proteins that strengthen tight junctions, there are ones called claudin and occludin. These are called 'transmembrane proteins' because they pass through the cell membranes like a needle stitching them together. They stitch cell membrane to cell membrane like a needle, which is how they connect things—these transmembrane proteins are also among the proteins that strengthen the tight junctions between cells.
It turns out that eucalyptus oil has been found to increase the production of occludin and claudin—these transmembrane proteins that strengthen tight junctions. Isn't that amazing? When tight junctions are strengthened and cells in the stratum corneum adhere firmly together, external irritants can't penetrate, and internal moisture doesn't escape—meaning the barrier function is strengthened.
This strengthened barrier function is actually very important for whitening too. In the past, there were no sunscreens or whitening cosmetics like we have today. So what did people do when exposed to UV rays back then? The stratum corneum itself blocked UV rays to some extent. So when barrier function declines, skin becomes more susceptible to inflammation. Having a strong barrier function and moisture in the stratum corneum helps make skin less prone to inflammation from UV exposure.
So this product contains tranexamic acid to suppress inflammation, and though its effect might be somewhat weaker, it also contains water-soluble vitamin C. Additionally, it contains eucalyptus oil, which strengthens your skin's own barrier function. For those worried about UV exposure leading to spots during this upcoming season, I thought this would be a great choice—plus, being in gel form, it blends smoothly into the skin.
Next up is this one: Hada Bisei Turning Care Whitening Medicated Whitening Serum. Like the Hada Labo product, the active whitening ingredients here are also vitamin C and tranexamic acid. The vitamin C is the same water-soluble L-ascorbic acid 2-glucoside. This product also contains plant-based ceramides and coix seed extract (Job's tears), which helps prevent skin roughness.
At first glance, you might think 'oh, it's just vitamin C and tranexamic acid, and it doesn't have eucalyptus oil, so the previous one must be better.' While it's true this doesn't contain eucalyptus oil, remember what I said earlier about water-soluble vitamin C having difficulty penetrating the skin due to its oily nature. Well, this product actually contains something called CHDB, which stands for cyclohexanedicarboxylic acid bis(ethoxydiglycol).
By incorporating this ingredient, the water-soluble vitamin C is able to penetrate deep into the skin. Why is that? This cyclohexanedicarboxylic acid bis(ethoxydiglycol) is amphiphilic—meaning it dissolves in both water and oil. It's an amphiphilic ester oil.
What's amazing about this ester oil is that it has the ability to promote the penetration of water-soluble substances into the skin. Isn't that incredible? By combining it with water-soluble vitamin C, it creates a pathway that properly delivers the vitamin C deep into the skin. So even though this contains the commonly found tranexamic acid and water-soluble vitamin C, thanks to this supporting ingredient that ensures proper delivery, I think it penetrates deeper than other products containing water-soluble vitamin C.
Tranexamic acid suppresses inflammation, and vitamin C similarly suppresses inflammation while lightening darkened spots through 'melanin decolorization.' This would be great for those concerned about both inflammation and existing spots getting darker, as well as those who've been using vitamin C toners without noticing much effect, only to realize it was water-soluble vitamin C. Given that it's also quite affordable, I thought it was worth trying at least once, so I picked this one too.
Moving on to the third product: Keshimin Cream EX. About two years ago, when I introduced affordable whitening serums, I also featured the Keshimin serum. It's technically a cream, but since you apply it only to specific spots, I've been introducing it more like a serum. This is the upgraded EX version.
What's different about it? The active ingredient in Keshimin is also L-ascorbic acid 2-glucoside, the same water-soluble vitamin C mentioned earlier. Additionally, it contains arbutin. Arbutin is actually related to hydroquinone—you know, that skin-lightening agent often called the 'skin bleach.' Arbutin is created by attaching glucose to hydroquinone. While hydroquinone is used in some cosmetics, it's also used in pharmaceutical products for its strong bleaching and spot-improving effects. Arbutin isn't as strong as hydroquinone, but it works by suppressing the activation of tyrosinase—the enzyme that is the precursor to melanin production—thereby inhibiting the very first step of melanin formation.
With this combination of vitamin C derivative plus arbutin, I think this product can target whitening more effectively. It also contains tocopherol (vitamin E), which has powerful antioxidant properties. Just like vitamin C, vitamin E helps block the signal sent by reactive oxygen species (generated by UV-induced inflammation) that tells the skin to produce spots. Since preventing spots requires blocking the process from multiple angles, especially during this upcoming season, I think this upgraded version provides that multi-layered protection, which is why I chose to introduce it.
All of these products I purchased at drugstores, and I genuinely felt they were worth more than their price—incredible value for money in the whitening category. UV rays are really going to intensify from now on. The basic rule is to apply sunscreen every single day of the year, but as UV rays get stronger, I think it would be great to incorporate whitening products into your skincare routine as well.
