Hello everyone, this is Yui Tomori.
What do you think is the most important thing for beautiful skin? There's actually one key thing that, if properly addressed, leads to beautiful skin. I think many of you may not have noticed this, so today I'd like to explain in detail this one important thing for achieving beautiful skin.
When you think of beautiful skin, what kind of skin do you imagine? No unevenness in color tone, no dryness, firmness, no visible pores—there are many aspects, right? For these, we talk about incorporating effective ingredients, protecting against UV rays, not scrubbing too hard, and various other things on this YouTube channel. But since there are so many things, people often ask me what the single most important thing to do is.
When I really thought about what exactly you should do to achieve beautiful skin, I concluded that it comes down to normalizing skin turnover.
"Normalizing turnover" sounds incredibly simple and almost too obvious, so you might wonder how that could possibly help. But let me explain what turnover actually means for those who might not know. Skin cells have a layer called the epidermis and another called the dermis, with the basal layer in between. From the basement membrane in the basal layer, epidermal cells are born. This process of epidermal cells being born and growing is called turnover. During this growth process, substances like ceramides and intercellular lipids are produced as turnover progresses. Eventually, after turnover, the cells become the stratum corneum and shed off.
So what happens when turnover isn't normalized? Turnover is said to take about 28 days, but as we age, it's said to take longer. For those in their 40s or approaching 50, it's said to take about two months.
When turnover slows down, what happens is that skin becomes more prone to dryness. When skin becomes drier, the skin's barrier function declines. External irritants—like UV rays and various other factors—start to affect not just the epidermis but also reach the dermis. This causes effects to spread from the basement membrane to the dermis, which I imagine leads to overall dullness in the skin.
So when you normalize turnover and properly create moisture in the skin, this strengthens the skin's barrier function, which in turn makes the skin itself look more beautiful. For example, cells that have accumulated melanin will also be shed if turnover is normalized. So it's bad if turnover is too slow, but it's also bad if it's too fast—normalizing it is the key point.
For instance, when it comes to speeding things up, think about retinol. It has the effect of increasing hyaluronic acid in the epidermis, but it also speeds up turnover. If turnover speeds up too much, the skin can't produce enough ceramides or intercellular lipids, which is why applying retinol can cause peeling. So speeding it up too much is also bad. Slowing it down too much is also bad. What matters is normalizing it.
So what's important for normalizing turnover? Basement membrane care. By caring for the basal layer, you normalize turnover. This is why basement membrane and basal layer care has become such a trend right now.
Among ingredients for basement membrane and basal layer care, there's one ingredient that has been officially recognized by the government: Rice Power No. 11. Rice Power No. 11 works on the basal layer to normalize turnover. Not only does it normalize turnover, but it also increases the production of ceramides and intercellular lipids, thereby improving the skin's moisture retention capacity—this is the only ingredient recognized by the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare for this effect. So in terms of reliably normalizing turnover, I think Rice Power No. 11 is a trustworthy option. Another thing that comes to mind is exfoliation care.
When turnover slows down and dead skin cells accumulate, thinning out the stratum corneum a bit sends a signal saying, "Since the stratum corneum has become thinner, please speed up turnover and produce more cells." This can help normalize turnover that had slowed down.
Nowadays, there are many peeling products available that can even be used on sensitive skin, so it's reassuring if you properly distinguish between products good for oily skin versus those good for sensitive skin. Exfoliation care that gives this kind of gentle push is very important, and I think it's one way to help normalize turnover.
So when turnover is normalized and skin moisture properly increases, the skin's barrier function improves. While normalizing turnover might seem like it only concerns the epidermis, there's various data showing that the dermis beneath it is also connected to this process. So when asked about the single most important thing for beautiful skin, I'd say it's normalizing skin turnover.
Of course, sunscreen is also important, and here's why: when you get sunburned, the basement membrane is said to become damaged. When the basement membrane is damaged, turnover becomes disrupted. You know how skin gets dry after sunburn? That's because damage to the basement membrane and basal layer disrupts turnover, which prevents skin from looking beautiful. So the key points are: incorporating ingredients that normalize turnover, doing some exfoliation care, and applying sunscreen.
So, what did you think? When I considered what the one most important thing for beautiful skin is, I concluded that normalizing skin turnover increases the skin's moisture-holding power. This strengthens barrier function. And when that happens, I believe skin naturally looks more beautiful. So I hope you'll all focus on normalizing turnover and choose your skincare ingredients accordingly.
Thank you for watching until the end today. I'll see you in the next video. Goodbye.
