まずはA&W……
Transcript (English)
Hi everyone, I'm Arata Tomori! Today I was planning to have a relaxing chat at home with my husband, but our 10-year friend Yohei happened to come back from the United States and stopped by, so I decided to film a video where we reminisce about the past decade together. Everyone, this is Sato Yohei!
Yohei is a conductor at the Boston Chamber Orchestra — yes, I mispronounced it again as usual, sorry about that! He's also a junior member of the talent agency I belong to in Japan, handling Japanese entertainment activities whenever he's back in the country. He even watches this YouTube channel from America, cheering me on.
He mentioned that as my channel keeps growing — "Once you hit 500,000 subscribers, you'll definitely be coming to America" — and decided to bring some things he wanted me to know about before I make the trip. These are items that American families buy by the case, they're so common.
First up is root beer — A&W, known as "Enda" in Okinawa where I'm from. Apparently everyone in America drinks it. Yohei himself once accidentally grabbed root beer instead of cola from the dorm vending machine in college.
As for why it's called "root beer" — "root" refers to the roots of plants, which were originally fermented to make it. But the key ingredient Yohei really wanted to highlight is licorice, which contains glycyrrhizic acid. Regular viewers will recognize that — it's the ingredient I often talk about for reducing skin inflammation and oxidation. It's a very well-known beauty and wellness compound.
He brought two varieties: the familiar A&W, and Abita from Louisiana. While A&W contains some artificial flavors, Abita is all-natural and made with cane sugar — right up my alley!
He also brought a German-packaged licorice candy, which looked quite intense from the outside.
We did a toast and tried the root beer… and my first impression was: "It smells like a medicated patch (like Salonpas)!" The sweetness of the cane sugar does follow afterward, but the initial punch is quite something. My honest reactions included "Do I really need this as a drink?" and "My breath now smells like an elderly man's" — all said with love, of course!
We also tried the licorice candy. I declared it "a flavor I've never experienced in 43 years of life." It softens as you chew, and apparently it often shows up in Halloween candy in America — kids eat it all the time. Incredible.
While glycyrrhizic acid does have real anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, my honest takeaway was: "Maybe I'd rather get this as a supplement than a snack!"
We had originally planned to sit down with my husband and share stories from the past 10 years that even he doesn't know — but the root beer and licorice were just too much of an experience to get past! For more of the Tomori & Yohei story, please check out Yohei's channel.
After all this, America feels even further away than before — so I think I'll keep working hard here in Japan a little longer! Let's meet again on Yohei's channel too. See you in the next video. Bye!
