Hello everyone! I'm Aratame Toshiyoshi. Today, I want to share a video that I'd really like both oily skin and dry skin types to watch. People with oily skin often experience excessive sebum, which causes acne and skin inflammation. On the other hand, dry skin occurs when sebum secretion is low and the skin barrier function deteriorates, leading to dryness and inflammation. So far, skincare advice has focused on adjusting the quantity of sebum—increasing it for those with less and decreasing it for those with more. However, I've recently realized something important: both oily and dry skin types experience inflammation, but perhaps the issue isn't about sebum quantity but rather sebum quality. Consider two people with oily skin. One has shiny, smooth skin despite abundant sebum, while another has oily skin with redness around pores and inner dryness—a condition called dehydrated oily skin. Both have high sebum production, yet their skin conditions differ greatly. Similarly, some people with dry skin have beautiful skin, while others have compromised skin barrier function. The key difference is the composition of sebum. Sebum contains triglycerides, free fatty acids, wax esters, and other components. Specifically, unsaturated fatty acids play a crucial role in skin inflammation. Whether someone has oily or dry skin, if their sebum contains high levels of unsaturated fatty acids, they experience inflammation, particularly around the pores. This explains why people with abundant sebum can have either glossy or inflamed skin, and why some dry skin types remain healthy while others have compromised barriers. It all comes down to unsaturated fatty acid content. Unsaturated fatty acids are easily re-absorbed into the skin, triggering inflammation in epidermal cells and disrupting the lamellar structure. This reduces the skin's ability to maintain moisture, causing both oily skin types to develop dehydration and dry skin types to worsen. My own oily skin varies daily—sometimes radiant, sometimes red and inflamed. This variation is influenced by diet, sleep, and even spicy foods like curry, which alter the ratio of unsaturated fatty acids. I realized the issue wasn't sebum quantity but quality. This understanding was further reinforced when I learned about seborrheic dermatitis, a condition where controlling sebum quantity doesn't improve the chronic inner dryness—suggesting that unsaturated fatty acid content might be the real culprit. The solution isn't about reducing sebum quantity but preventing unsaturated fatty acid reabsorption while maintaining skin hydration. That's where Kanebo's innovation comes in: targeted sebum trapping. The concept is simple but brilliant—use an ingredient that selectively traps only unsaturated fatty acids (which cause problems) while allowing beneficial sebum to remain on the skin. Kanebo developed this using a complex of hydroxypropyl cellulose and sorbitan isostearate. Hydroxypropyl cellulose functions like a sponge, absorbing unsaturated fatty acids before they can be reabsorbed into the skin. However, the specific formulation matters—it's currently under patent. It's not just about using any hydroxypropyl cellulose but ensuring the right combination of ingredients works together. As a Kao Group company, Kanebo further enhanced their Skin Harmonizer toner by including keratin and moisture-retaining ingredients. This removes problematic sebum while preserving beneficial sebum and boosting skin hydration. Skin Harmonizer features a 2% oil content; you shake it before use to incorporate the oil into the toner. After using it myself, I noticed reduced pore appearance, less redness, and increased radiance. When discussing skincare with dry skin individuals during magazine shoots, they expressed frustration with typical sebum-control products, but this toner impressed them. It's rare to find a toner that works well for both skin types. I've observed that both men and women can have either glossy, healthy skin or oily, congested, inflamed skin despite similar sebum production. Regardless of gender or whether you have oily or dry skin, I'd recommend trying Kanebo's Skin Harmonizer. I believe skincare philosophy is shifting from focusing on sebum quantity to emphasizing sebum quality. This product fundamentally changed my understanding of skincare, which is why I'm passionate about explaining it today. This is truly a versatile toner for everyone. If you've tried various sebum-control products without success, I highly recommend Kanebo's Skin Harmonizer. I've discussed this extensively on Instagram Live and YouTube Live before its release, and today I've provided a deeper dive into the science. If you found this helpful, please give the video a thumbs up. If there's another skincare product you'd like me to analyze in detail, please comment below. Thank you, and I'll see you in the next video. Goodbye!
