Hello everyone, this is Arata Tomori. Today I want to talk about whitening, but since I've received many questions like "How should I differentiate between different whitening active ingredients?", today I'll discuss how to choose whitening active ingredients based on your skin type and what whitening active ingredients different types of people should use.
There are quite a variety of whitening active ingredients, right? And there are really many items containing these active ingredients. While the items themselves are important, if you understand what the main active ingredients are doing, you'll be able to figure out which whitening active ingredient to choose for your type. So today, while I'll introduce some items, I'd like to focus on a deeper dive into the active ingredients themselves. If you're wondering which whitening item to use, I hope you'll refer to today's video.
First, think of whitening active ingredients as having 4 major types. By understanding these 4 types, you'll be able to figure out which point to block for the best whitening results.
Let me start by explaining how melanin is made. First, UV radiation or irritation affects your skin, right? When melanocytes—the cells that make melanin—sense this irritation, they receive a signal to produce melanin. The melanocytes that receive this signal produce melanin, which is then transferred to skin cells. Just making melanin in melanocytes isn't enough because these melanocytes act as a parasol for the skin. So we place this parasol over the stratum corneum to protect it from damage. That's the key point—transferring the melanin produced to epidermal cells is also important.
Normally, this transferred melanin protects like an open parasol, but gradually through skin turnover it's expelled. This normal cycle of melanin excretion is the regular flow. When either of these processes doesn't go smoothly or becomes excessive, spots form.
As you can see, whitening active ingredients work by targeting and blocking these 4 different pathways.
The first is blocking the signal from being sent when irritation occurs. For this, we need to block the pathway. So, ingredients that prevent this signal from being sent include tranexamic acid first—something you all love. Tranexamic acid has strong anti-inflammatory effects, so reducing inflammation equals preventing this signal from being sent.
Second, an ingredient often found in Dr. G products is chamomile extract. When UV exposure causes inflammation, this ingredient suppresses that inflammation and the resulting signal.
Another is glycyrrhetinic acid stearyl. Glycyrrhetinic acid stearyl was initially approved by Shiseido this year as a whitening active ingredient. Glycyrrhetinic acid stearyl originally had strong anti-inflammatory properties, but it's also being used as a whitening active ingredient because it blocks signals from being sent.
So these three—tranexamic acid, chamomile extract, and glycyrrhetinic acid stearyl—block signals from being sent to melanocytes.
Who should use these signal-blocking ingredients? First, people who are frequently exposed to UV radiation. Since UV exposure triggers signals, people who work outdoors are constantly receiving instructions to produce melanin. These people should definitely consider using these three ingredients.
Next is blocking the process where melanocytes produce melanin when irritation occurs. There are quite a few options here. When melanocytes produce melanin, they use a substance called tyrosine as a base. When the enzyme tyrosinase is added to tyrosine, it creates melanin through this process. So inhibiting the tyrosinase enzyme is what prevents melanin from being produced.
Representative ingredients include vitamin C, which you all love, as well as rucinol, 4MSK, hydroquinone, and kojic acid. Quite a lot of whitening serums contain these.
First is vitamin C. I think you've seen it in many products. For example, ASTALIFT's TheSerum Brightening contains liposomal vitamin C in carbon liposomes, allowing it to directly target melanocytes. This is a type of vitamin C that goes to melanocytes and prevents melanin production.
Next is kojic acid. Similarly, for this season, there's Kose's ONE BY KOSE Melanoshoot Double Mask. Melanoshoot isn't just available as a mask but also as a serum, and it contains kojic acid that targets melanocytes and prevents melanin production.
Next is rucinol. Rucinol is developed by the Pola group and is included in this season's White Shot. White Shot is already famous as you all know, and it's in Shirojyun as well. For this season, it's also formulated in Aqua Label blue.
As for hydroquinone, it's basically something prescribed at clinics, so it's rarely found in cosmetics. However, some Rohto Pharmaceutical Derma C+ series products contain it, so those might be an option if you're interested.
Who should use the "prevent production" type? Mainly people who already have visible spots. The area where you have a spot shows that the melanocytes there are active and constantly producing melanin. Turning off that switch is what these active ingredients do.
So while UV exposure is a factor, if you currently have spots and don't want them to get darker, I'd recommend checking out active ingredients in the "prevent production" category.
Next is blocking the transfer of produced melanin to epidermal cells. This is niacinamide. Niacinamide is in quite a lot of products, right? For drugstore brands, for example, the red Adarabio also contains niacinamide.
For just preventing transfer, honestly, using it alone feels a bit unreliable. So niacinamide works best when combined with other ingredients or the brand's proprietary complexes. For example, SK-Ⅱ's Genoptimizer Essence combines niacinamide with Pitera. When combined with other active ingredients or proprietary complexes like this, niacinamide's benefits are better realized. Using it alone feels a bit insufficient.
Next is the excretion category. If we can expel the melanin that's already been transferred before it becomes fixed, it won't settle as spots. These are items that improve cellular metabolism and promote expulsion. There are two: one is dexpanthenol, developed by the Orbis group. It's included in Orbis Brightening Serum and really promotes metabolism. Another is Energy Signal AMP from the Otsuka Pharmaceutical group. It's included in Sakura E and Inner Signal products and similarly promotes expulsion.
Rather than targeting specific areas, if you're concerned about overall dullness, this is highly recommended. It's also good for people who are aging. One reason expulsion slows is UV exposure, but another is the decline in turnover due to aging. So no matter who you are, as you age, expulsion slows down. Even if you prevent melanin production or reduce irritation, melanin accumulates and results in overall dullness.
Of course, if dullness concerns you, that's obvious. But if you're somewhat older, using various anti-aging and brightening products without seeing results, I recommend using the expulsion type and supporting turnover while doing so.
Now you might be thinking, "Wait, isn't 4MSK also called an expulsion type?" But we mentioned 4MSK in the "prevent production" section, right? It's approved for suppressing tyrosinase activity and melanin proliferation.
However, you often hear that 4MSK improves metabolism. This is separate from what it's approved for—4MSK also has the action of slightly thinning the stratum corneum, which promotes turnover. So the only ingredients approved for "promoting expulsion" are the dexpanthenol and Energy Signal AMP I mentioned earlier.
In summary, whitening active ingredients work by either blocking or promoting these 4 pathways.
First, preventing irritation. People with daily UV exposure—those who work outdoors—should definitely consider using the signal-blocking type.
Second, preventing melanin production itself. For people with existing spots. Spot areas show active melanocytes constantly producing melanin. By using melanin prevention ingredients, you can lighten existing spots. Research shows that one spot actually causes signals throughout the skin, increasing melanin production overall—meaning melanocytes become activated. So people with spots should use the prevention approach.
Third, blocking melanin transfer to epidermal cells. This is niacinamide. However, since niacinamide alone is somewhat weak for whitening, it's recommended to use it with other active ingredients or proprietary complexes.
Fourth, promoting expulsion of transferred melanin through turnover so it doesn't settle. This is recommended for those with overall dullness and those who are aging. Turnover inevitably declines with age. So produced melanin doesn't expel as well, settling as overall dullness. Whether you have dullness or are young, as you age, combining with other active ingredients and supporting turnover should give better results.
So, how was that? Since there are so many whitening active ingredients, if you choose based on the perspective I've discussed today, I think you'll be able to find active ingredients suited to you.
