Hello everyone! I'm Dr. Yuri Nitta, a physician specializing in internal medicine and dermatology. Today, I'd like to share the habits I personally practice to achieve and maintain fair, even skin. I often get asked: "Doctor, how do you keep your skin so white? How do you maintain an even complexion?" Let me share everything I do.
I actually grew up on Miyakojima, a southern island in Okinawa. When I tell people that, they often say, "You don't look like you're from Okinawa at all — your skin is so fair!" But I wasn't naturally this light-skinned. Back in Okinawa, my skin was just as tanned as any local. Through consistent skin-brightening habits, I've achieved my current complexion. Let me walk you through exactly what I do.
【Tip 1: Use Whitening Skincare Products Year-Round】
Many people think whitening products are only for spring and summer, and that they can skip them in fall and winter when UV levels drop. Cosmetic brands also tend to market whitening products mainly for warmer months. However, as I've emphasized many times on this channel, whitening skincare does not fade existing dark spots — it works as prevention. It helps your skin recover from UV damage and stops new dark spots from forming.
While spring and summer certainly bring stronger UV rays, the sun still shines in fall and winter. More importantly, UVA rays — which are responsible for photoaging and dark spots — remain relatively constant throughout all four seasons. Even if you're diligent in summer, skipping your whitening routine in winter means your skin is still taking damage. If you're serious about brightening your skin, use whitening skincare products all year long.
【Tip 2: Protect Your Skin from UV Rays Every Day】
I know this might sound repetitive, but I'll keep saying it: approximately 70% of skin aging is caused by UV exposure. Wearing sunscreen 365 days a year is essential.
UVA rays, which accelerate skin aging, can penetrate through curtains and glass windows — meaning they reach your skin even when you're indoors. The room where I film these videos has a window with sunlight streaming in right now. If you sit near a window or have your curtains open, please apply sunscreen. Also remember: sunscreen is not a makeup primer — it is the final step of your morning skincare routine, applied before any makeup.
On a personal note, my living room has large windows that let in intense sunlight in summer. To address this, I've applied transparent UV-blocking film to the windows. It lets light through while filtering out harmful UV rays — I highly recommend it.
【Tip 3: Actively Consume Vitamin C — Inside and Out】
Vitamin C is one of the most powerful antioxidants available. When applied topically, it suppresses melanin production, reducing the formation of dark spots. It won't turn Japanese skin Caucasian-white, but it can restore your skin to its natural, healthy brightness by controlling excess melanin. Vitamin C is a key ally in achieving that.
Applying Vitamin C directly to the skin is beneficial, but consuming it through food and drinks also allows it to work as an antioxidant from within, supporting skin brightening from the inside out. The recommended daily intake for skin brightening purposes is around 1,000 mg.
I do take supplements occasionally, but I treat them strictly as a supplement — not a replacement for food. My priority is getting Vitamin C through my diet. Every day, I make a large bowl of salad packed with Vitamin C-rich ingredients: broccoli, bell peppers, baby spinach, kale, apple, and blueberries, dressed with olive oil, salt, and pepper. I aim to eat 500–800g of vegetables per day.
Rather than isolating Vitamin C alone, I believe that consuming it together with polyphenols and phytochemicals found naturally in vegetables and fruits enhances its skin-brightening effects. On days when I eat out or don't get enough vegetables, I supplement with Vitamin C tablets or capsules.
For topical application, I apply Vitamin C-based skincare products both morning and night. You may have heard that applying Vitamin C in the morning can cause dark spots — that is a myth. Please disregard it. In fact, morning application of Vitamin C helps protect the skin against UV-induced damage throughout the day.
【Summary】
• Block UV rays with sunscreen every day
• Use whitening skincare products to reduce inflammation caused by UV exposure
• Supply Vitamin C both internally (through food and supplements) and externally (through skincare)
By consistently following these steps, your skin will gradually return to its natural, brighter tone. I hope you find this helpful!
