Hello everyone, this is Arata Tominaga. Today, I'm going to give you an in-depth look at the Obagi Day Serum UV, which many of you have requested a deep dive into. The Obagi Day Serum UV is a UV product packed with vitamin C. Of course, Obagi is known for vitamin C. But you might be thinking, didn't the previous products also contain vitamin C? What's different about this one? Well, the difference is not just the amount, but how vitamin C is sustained on the skin. Since Obagi is the expert on vitamin C, they've been able to achieve this. So even if you've used vitamin C-containing products before and didn't notice much change, I'd encourage you to listen to today's breakdown and understand how vitamin C is applied to your skin. Also, this UV product offers anti-aging benefits, and it's especially great for those concerned about pores and oily skin like me. It's packed with features that are perfect for such skin types, so please watch until the end. First, let me explain why vitamin C is necessary for the skin. There's this misconception that if you apply vitamin C in the morning, it will cause dark spots. This rumor might have discouraged some people from using vitamin C in the morning. However, vitamin C absolutely does not cause dark spots when applied in the morning. In fact, vitamin C has strong antioxidant properties. When UV rays hit the skin, inflammation occurs and the skin oxidizes. This oxidation and inflammation signal activate melanocytes to produce melanin, resulting in dark spots. Vitamin C works by stopping this oxidation before inflammation signals are triggered. Therefore, it's very important to keep vitamin C on the skin during the day when exposed to UV rays. Obagi has been offering pure vitamin C serums and recommending morning use. While vitamin C has extremely high antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, it has one drawback: it's easily degradable. Particularly with pure vitamin C, once applied to the skin, it sacrifices itself to prevent oxidation. So when UV rays continuously hit the skin, it's difficult to sustain this effect. The power gets used up, and over time, its efficacy diminishes. So the challenge is how to keep vitamin C on the skin for a long time, and also, incorporating vitamin C into UV products is extremely difficult. Today, I want to focus on these two key points. First, when formulating UV products, UV absorbers are oil-soluble. However, vitamin C and its derivatives are mostly water-soluble. So if you try to add a large amount of vitamin C, it interferes with the UV absorbers and reduces UV effectiveness. On the other hand, if you prioritize including enough UV protection by reducing vitamin C, you can't achieve a high concentration of vitamin C. Therefore, Obagi had to figure out how to formulate a product where both water-soluble and oil-soluble components could be highly concentrated. Normally, water-soluble ingredients and oil-based UV absorbers are mixed with emulsifiers to create UV products. But adding high-concentration vitamin C creates even more water content, causing separation and texture issues. So what did they do? They cooled the formula first. Then they gradually added high-concentration water-soluble vitamin C into the cooled base. This sounds simple, but the timing of adding vitamin C and the precise temperature balance required to successfully incorporate high-concentration vitamin C shows their expertise. Moreover, they're particular about the type of vitamin C used. Previously, the vitamin C in Obagi products would quickly sacrifice itself, which was fine for a beauty ingredient, but maintaining its effects throughout the day was challenging. So in this UV product, they've incorporated three different types of vitamin C with different properties. First is glyceryl ascorbate, known as a moisturizing vitamin C. This is vitamin C combined with glycerin, a moisturizer. While pure vitamin C can cause irritation and dryness, adding glycerin allows vitamin C to be applied to the skin throughout the day while maintaining moisture. Second is ascorbyl glucoside, called sustained-release vitamin C derivative. Since this works gradually on the skin, and UV exposure is continuous throughout the day, vitamin C slowly prevents oxidation. Third is tetrahexyldecyl ascorbate, a stable vitamin C derivative. Being fat-soluble, it remains in the stratum corneum and provides sustained protection. By combining these three types of vitamin C derivatives, they maintain constant vitamin C presence on the skin over extended periods without causing irritation. However, as mentioned, vitamin C inevitably sacrifices itself when exposed to UV rays to prevent oxidation, so it gets consumed. Therefore, it's better to release vitamin C when UV rays hit. How did they achieve this? They encapsulated it so that when UV rays hit, the capsule breaks and releases stable vitamin C. Isn't that amazing? It only releases what's needed when it's needed—the capsule formulation is incredibly ingenious. These capsules are made from natural polysaccharide derivatives. When sufficient UV hits, they burst and release tetrahexyldecyl ascorbate. Since it's fat-soluble vitamin C, they've also included fat-soluble vitamin E, so when UV rays hit, vitamins C and E burst together to continuously prevent oxidation. This is what sets this vitamin C-containing sunscreen apart from previous products. Also, there's this Obagi original feature: they've added a powder that glows red when hit by UV rays. When UV rays hit, it reacts to release vitamin C, but it also tones up the face. As you receive more light, it naturally disguises pores with a luminous glow. Pretty amazing, right? Another feature addresses oily, pore-prone skin. People wanting to use vitamin C are often concerned about pores and texture. Typically, oil-absorbing powders are used that absorb sebum, which works fine for overall oily skin. But sebum production is localized. If you completely absorb it with powder, it causes dryness. So what they did is use an emulsification system that emulsifies oil when it appears on the skin, creating a cream-like layer rather than stripping oil away. You can blot excess oil with tissue, and only the unnecessary oil gets removed while the necessary amount remains like a natural cream. I'm very oily myself, but at 46, my undereyes and jawline don't get oily—only my T-zone and chin. Oil-absorbing-powder-only products scare me to use all over. But this product maintains that natural cream-like layer, so I can just blot excess oil from problem areas to control shine. I find that approach wonderful. Of course, it offers SPF 50+ and PA++++. This is a primer, and when applied it looks whitish, but blends in completely with no white cast. It's not greasy at all, making it a really pleasant UV product. There's also a BB cream. The BB cream comes in Natural and Light shades—these are tinted products. So if you want a one-step product or just BB cream for going out, you can choose this. Let me apply the Light shade here. I've already applied the Day Serum to this side, so the BB Light cream shows its color. When I blend it, it looks like this. The tone is lifted but looks natural, so for those wanting a one-step product, the BB Serum is a great option. Both products are not greasy. They're perfect for pore-concerned or oily skin. And with such high-concentration vitamin C, no other UV product like this exists. Since vitamin C prevents melanocyte activation caused by UV exposure, I think this UV is perfect for those wanting to prevent dark spots. So today, I've given you an in-depth look at Obagi's Day Serum UV, which you requested. The fact that they, as vitamin C experts, could successfully incorporate high-concentration vitamin C and sustain its release through encapsulation shows incredible dedication. Of course, it benefits everyone, but since Obagi users are often those with oily skin and pore concerns, the oil and pore management features are really well-considered. Please do try it. If you enjoyed today's content, please hit the like button, and if there's anything else you'd like me to deep dive into, please comment. I'll see you in the next video. Goodbye, it's Arata Tominaga.
