Hello everyone. I'm Arata Tomori, an internal medicine and dermatologist doctor. Today I want to explain pore packs to everyone. When it comes to pore packs, this is the one, right? Biore's Pore Pack. I think there's almost no one who hasn't tried this - it's practically synonymous with pore packs. But even though these pore packs feel satisfying because they remove sebum plugs completely, I often hear people say things like "It's probably bad for your skin, isn't it? You're probably going to tell me not to do it, doctor, so I've been doing it secretly." So today, from a dermatologist's perspective, I want to thoroughly explain what pore packs are really about. First, do you all know what a pore pack actually is? I think many people have the image that it's like an adhesive that forcibly rips out the sebum plugs, but actually that's not quite right. It uses something called a "micro tweezers" formulation. What this means is that an ingredient called cationic polymer actually penetrates into the pores, and when it hardens, it sticks to the sebum plug like a suction cup. The polymer material grabs the plug like tweezers, and that's how it's pulled out smoothly. This cationic polymer is one of the extremely important formulation ingredients. So instead of forcibly ripping off the top layer, the key point is that the cationic polymer firmly grips around the sebum plug like tweezers. So actually, if you don't misuse this, it's not that much of a burden on your skin. Some people worry that once you pop out the sebum plug, doesn't the pore stay wide open? Well, Biore has properly published data about this on their website. Of course, since they're a major company, I don't think it's a lie - it should be legitimate data - and you can check this on Biore's website yourself. What I found interesting was this: when you remove the plug, naturally the pore becomes a bit smaller since what was inside is now gone. Then over about 2 days, it gradually shrinks and starts producing sebum again, returning somewhat to its original state - but not 100%. It shrinks a bit and then returns partially. The data showed that by repeating this process several times, rather than the pores opening up, they actually get smaller. Of course, since this is Biore's own product, I understand why they'd present it that way, but I think without proper aftercare, the pores won't gradually shrink on their own. What's important is what kind of skincare you do after using a pore pack, and how you use pore packs in general. First, pore packs aren't something everyone should use. They're recommended for people with active sebum production, some blackheads, or visible sebum plugs poking out of pores. But even among people with pore issues, those with sagging pores should avoid this. Of course, sagging pores are less common on the nose, but for example, even if you think your cheek area has clogged pores, this area might actually have sagging pores. In such cases, I recommend using the pack only on your nose. As for timing, of course make sure to properly cleanse your face and remove makeup, and use it on clean skin. Also, an important point is not letting the pore pack get too dry and crispy. Why is that? Because this cationic polymer dissolves and becomes gooey when it contains a bit of moisture. So if you've used a pore pack before, you'll notice the instructions say to apply a little water. This is to properly dissolve the cationic polymer. As I mentioned earlier, the cationic polymer gently grips the sebum plug like tweezers, but if it dries out completely and becomes crispy, that gripping force becomes stronger. So within the designated time, please peel it off slowly before it becomes too dry and crispy. If you peel it off slowly, the areas where the cationic polymer has attached will come off smoothly, so it seems this won't cause much irritation to the skin. That said, peeling something off is still a form of stimulation. Some inflammation will likely occur around the pores. Additionally, once the sebum plug is pulled out, the skin will think it needs to produce more sebum again. So it's extremely important to incorporate two things into your aftercare skincare: something to calm the inflammation, and ingredients that signal the skin doesn't need to produce more sebum. Specifically, I recommend Vitamin C and ceramides. As many of you know, Vitamin C has anti-inflammatory properties, whitening effects, and also has properties that suppress sebum production. Among various forms, pure Vitamin C is known for its fast-acting effects, so I think it's important to properly apply something containing pure Vitamin C after using a pore pack. Specifically, I personally use and love the "Spa Treatment Real C Serum," which contains pure Vitamin C. Now, about ceramides - people who want to use pore packs tend to have oilier skin, right? People with active sebum production often actually have "inner dry" skin - meaning the inside is dehydrated, which is actually why sebum production becomes more active as a compensatory response. After using a pore pack, since the sebum plug is gone, the skin might try to compensate by producing more oil. By supplying moisture to the skin through ingredients like ceramide instead, you can help suppress this excessive sebum production. Additionally, ceramide is a very gentle ingredient for the skin, so even if there's some inflammation from the pore pack, it can still be used gently. I looked for a product that contains ceramide, is gentle enough for sensitive skin, and also has ingredients that suppress sebum production - and here's what I found: Purele Sebum Trouble Care Moisturizing Gel. This contains pseudo-ceramide as well as actual ceramide, plus eucalyptus extract, which itself has some calming and soothing effects. It also contains allantoin, which is another ingredient known to suppress inflammation. So while suppressing sebum secretion, even if inflammation occurs after using a pore pack, this product should properly calm that inflammation. Since it contains ceramide, it should improve excessive inner dryness, which in turn should help suppress the resulting sebum production. To sum up, I completely understand the urge to use pore packs, but first, please properly check whether you actually have clogged pores. If you do have clogged pores, using it about once a month shouldn't be a problem. When you do, please be careful not to let it dry out too much. If it becomes too dry and crispy, the polymer will harden and you'll end up forcibly ripping it off, so removing it while it's still somewhat moist is the key point for reducing the burden on your skin. That said, mild inflammation can still occur, so I think it would be good to incorporate ingredients with anti-inflammatory properties, Vitamin C to suppress sebum production, and ceramide to improve inner dryness.
