Hello everyone, I'm Arata Tomori, an internal medicine and dermatologist doctor. As I mentioned in the thumbnail a bit, if you're someone whose makeup easily breaks down under a mask, that might actually be a cause of dark spots. This might be a somewhat shocking title, but as I've said many times before, when it comes to the mechanism of how dark spots form, you all already know it's UV rays—in other words, sun damage. Of course, 70% of skin aging is caused by UV rays, so UV rays are the cause of most dark spots. However, the enemy isn't just UV rays. Dark spots tend to form on areas that receive a lot of UV exposure, like the jawline and cheeks, but don't you think the cheek area is also a place where makeup tends to break down easily? What's related to this is that it's an area with excessive sebum production. Sebum ultimately forms a protective film that covers the skin's barrier function, so it's very necessary for our bodies. I've previously mentioned that people prone to acne tend to have delayed skin aging because their telomeres stay properly long, suppressing skin aging. However, it's also been found that leaving excess sebum untreated can actually cause dark spots. As I've been saying, the sebum we need protects our skin, but if excess sebum is left as is, it actually oxidizes and turns into a certain substance. That substance is called lipid peroxide. This lipid peroxide first causes inflammation in the skin. When inflammation occurs in the skin, the skin texture becomes rougher and the skin itself becomes dull. This results in a feeling of reduced translucency. So when your face looks dull in the evening, this excess sebum oxidizing and causing skin dullness is a major contributing factor. However, it was long believed that since this is temporary, simply washing your face would solve the problem. But it's been found that when oxidized lipids remain for a long period, they actually activate melanocytes, making it easier to create dark spots just like UV rays do. So controlling sebum production in the first place—not leaving excess sebum on the skin for long periods—is extremely important for preventing dark spots and keeping them from darkening, thus maintaining skin translucency. However, for people in the age group prone to dark spots, if you suppress sebum production too much, it can cause dryness. Also, in this era of mask-wearing, suppressing sebum production can weaken the skin's barrier function, leading to inflammation from mask friction or dryness. So it's been quite a difficult balance. When lipid peroxide is present in the skin, it causes slight inflammation. This disrupts skin texture, causing a loss of translucency. The dullness that appears in the evening, or the reduced sense of translucency, can be attributed to this excess sebum oxidizing into lipid peroxide. However, this dullness was thought to be temporary and improvable with proper skincare. But recently it's become clear that this lipid peroxide may not just cause dullness, but could also be a cause of dark spots. What this means is that when lipid peroxide remains in the skin for a long time, it stimulates melanocytes—the cells that produce melanin pigment—just like UV rays do, causing them to release melanin pigment. This has gradually become clear through research. So even with mask-wearing, if you're someone whose makeup tends to break down easily, especially around the cheek area, you need to be careful because this sebum can turn into lipid peroxide, which can become the root cause of dark spots forming. Focusing on this, through various research, it was Dior who discovered that this excess sebum not only affects melanocytes but also suppresses the very enzyme that inhibits melanin production. Dior has done extensive research, and it was already understood that lipid peroxide tends to cause dark spots. But beyond just activating melanocytes, there's actually an enzyme in the body that suppresses melanocyte activity—an enzyme that helps prevent the formation of dark spots by suppressing melanocytes. They discovered that lipid peroxide, formed when excess sebum oxidizes, suppresses this enzyme, further darkening spots. So Dior has also developed a serum designed to properly address this issue. That's the one released this year: Dior Snow Ultimate Essence of Light. Dior's whitening care has traditionally been famous for this Snow series, which contains Edelweiss extract grown at Dior's own garden, cultivated without pesticides. This Edelweiss extract is famous for its anti-inflammatory effects and its whitening effect of suppressing melanocyte activity. This time, they've focused on sebum specifically, aiming to suppress it. But for someone who uses Dior products, simply suppressing sebum to the point of making skin overly dry and tight wouldn't be acceptable. So the formula allows good sebum to be produced while suppressing excess sebum, while also addressing dullness and enhancing whitening. To achieve this, in addition to the original Edelweiss extract, they've added water-soluble vitamin C, and to control sebum, they've incorporated zinc gluconate. This zinc gluconate suppresses unnecessary sebum without absorbing the sebum that's actually needed, so your skin won't become overly dry and tight. Combined with Dior's proprietary Edelweiss extract and vitamin C derivatives, this serum works to suppress sebum, calm skin inflammation, and enhance whitening. For those whose makeup tends to break down easily, who feel their dark spots have gotten somewhat darker recently, and who feel their skin has lost some translucency, this could be a good serum to consider. Not just UV rays, but excess sebum itself can actually increase skin dullness and cause dark spots. So, as with Dior's serum, while sebum is essential for barrier function and plays a very important role for the skin, too much of a good thing can be harmful. Excess sebum isn't good either. As I've explained, having excess sebum can activate melanocytes and suppress the enzyme that inhibits melanocyte activity, leading to dark spots. So please keep in mind serums and skincare that control sebum production and prevent makeup breakdown, and try selecting your skincare with this in mind for this spring and summer. How was that?
