Hello everyone, I'm Toa, a physician specializing in internal medicine and dermatology. Does your scalp smell? Today I'd like to share some rather surprising data I found about scalp odor. When we think of body odor, most people associate it with aging odor (kareishuu) that appears in people over 50. I used to think the same way. However, it turns out that scalp odor is also quite common in women in their 30s and 40s. Since I myself am in that age range, I felt I needed to be more careful — and I'd like to share that with all of you. Scalp odor is caused by sweat, sebum (skin oil), and stuffiness (moisture buildup). Research shows that sebum production, sweat, and stuffiness actually peak in people in their 30s. According to data from Rohto Pharmaceutical, while aging odor increases from the 50s onward, sweat odor, sebum odor, and scalp stuffiness are significantly higher in people in their 30s and 40s compared to those in their 50s or teens and 20s. But scalp odor isn't only about sweat, sebum, and stuffiness. There's another age-related factor involved. A pleasant-smelling substance unique to younger people — called "sweet odor" — decreases sharply from the 30s onward. This was also discovered through Rohto's research. You know how babies smell incredibly good? That sweet, milky scent? It has long been known that babies, children, and teenagers naturally emit a sweet fragrance. This comes from compounds called lactones — specifically Lactone C10 and Lactone C11. In teenagers, these are produced at a ratio of 1:2, creating a beautiful natural scent. Even when sweat and sebum are present, this lactone scent masks the unpleasant odors. Unfortunately, by the 20s, Lactone C10 nearly disappears, leaving only Lactone C11. And by the 30s, both lactones are barely produced at all. It's really a shame — at 40 myself, I'm probably producing none at all. Interestingly, the idea of supplementing this lost scent with fragrance is something that the brand Guerlain has been doing for a long time. Have you heard of their perfume "Mitsouko"? Released in 1919, it's a long-standing bestseller with bergamot as its top note, and rose and jasmine as its middle notes. It turns out that Mitsouko contains a blend of Lactone C11 and C12, which scientifically explains why it has remained such a beloved fragrance for over a century. Of course, wearing perfume is one option, but recently body washes and shampoos containing Lactone C10 and C11 have also become available. For those of us in our 30s and 40s, when lactones have declined and sebum, sweat, and stuffiness have increased, proper scalp care is essential. Here are four practical tips: 【1. Wash your scalp properly】 Some people advocate washing hair without cleanser, but sebum and sweat are oil-based and cannot be dissolved by water alone. Failing to use a proper cleanser leaves these substances on your scalp, where they become a source of odor. While harsh cleansers can dry out the scalp, skipping cleanser altogether allows sebum to accumulate, causing inflammation and odor. 【2. Prevent moisture buildup (stuffiness)】 Sleeping with your hair tied up traps heat and moisture around the scalp. After blow-drying your hair thoroughly, brush it to allow air circulation. When sleeping, avoid tight hairstyles — let your hair down or keep it loosely tied. 【3. Watch your diet】 Foods high in animal fat increase sebum production, and strongly-scented foods like garlic can contribute to body odor. Try to limit fatty meats, fried foods, and other items that can overstimulate sebum production. 【4. Watch your sugar intake】 This is a common pitfall for women in their 30s and 40s: eating too many sweets. Consuming sugar depletes vitamin B complex in your body. Since vitamin B plays a key role in regulating sebum production, when it gets used up, sebum production can become dysregulated — which in this already sebum-prone age group can worsen scalp odor. Even if you don't eat much meat or fried food, if you love cakes and sweets, please be mindful. You don't have to stop entirely, but try to limit yourself to a small amount once a day rather than eating large quantities. With warmer weather approaching, scalp odor becomes an even bigger concern. While lactone production naturally declines from your 20s and 30s onward, you can counteract this by washing properly, preventing stuffiness, and being mindful of your diet. I'll be taking this advice to heart myself — I hope you find it helpful too! This channel covers beauty and health topics in an easy-to-understand way.
