Good evening, doctor. I have a question. Many people tell me my eyes are a bit bigger than average. While I'm grateful for that, I've developed dark circles and fine lines under my eyes that don't improve even with moisturizing. It's very stressful. Do you have any recommendations for eye creams or treatments?
This is actually a common issue for people with bigger eyes—they tend to develop wrinkles under the eyes more easily. So you'll want to apply eye cream thoroughly, and I think products containing retinol, which promotes firmness, would be good. So rather than an eye cream, I'd recommend a firming serum. For example, this Shiseido wrinkle-improving whitening cream—Vital Perfection Wrinkle Lift Deep Retinol Aid 5. Also, though it has fewer active ingredients, when I finish this one I'm planning to switch to this Elixir Spots Clear Serum, also from Shiseido, which also contains retinol, so that could work too. If retinol doesn't suit your skin well, as I mentioned before, there's bareMinerals' Phyto Retinol eye cream. I only have the box left since I've been using it and it's at my sink, but I think that Phyto Retinol eye cream is good too. Also, Dior's eye cream comes with an applicator that feels wonderfully cooling, so I think it's good for under-eye puffiness. Ideally, something with retinol as mentioned earlier would be best, but for now, just make sure to apply something thoroughly—that's the most important thing. Also, I actually use this one in the morning—Pola's Wrinkle Shot applied under the eyes—and at night I use the retinol one I mentioned earlier. I avoid retinol in the morning, so both products have been running low lately. That's roughly my routine.
Thank you for the mask advice. I'm also fighting bumps on my upper arms and taking care of them daily. I'm using Environ's Derma-lac lotion and moisturizing cream—how are these? I don't want to get sunburned, so I wear long sleeves while working outside all day, but the bumps turn red or dark. Could this also be caused by sweat or sebum? This condition is called keratosis pilaris, a type of skin condition. Keratosis pilaris is common among Asian women, and I believe it was mentioned that the person is in their 20s—it's most prominent in the teens and 20s, and it tends to fade as you get older. As for treatment, laser treatment is an option, but achieving completely clear skin is rare. So using something like Derma-lac lotion, which I believe is a lactic acid lotion—a peeling-type product—along with moisturizing, can help make it less noticeable. However, becoming completely smooth is genuinely difficult. It's one of those things that really does get better with age—so hang in there while you're young. As for cause, it's not really due to sweat or sebum; it's more of a constitutional trait. Sweat or sebum might cause some itchiness, so I do recommend wiping it away regularly, but it's not strongly related. So this is a condition called keratosis pilaris.
Good evening, doctor. I work outdoors every day, and the inside of my mask gets soaked with sweat quickly. When I can take it off, I blot the sweat with tissue—is that okay? I always study from your YouTube videos, so I haven't had any major skin trouble so far, but leaving sweat on your skin under a mask isn't good, right? What would you do, doctor? Many people confuse sebum and sweat, but sebaceous glands and sweat glands are actually different. Sebum functions to regulate the skin's barrier function, while sweat is more related to temperature regulation. Since they're located close together, it's fine to think of sweat glands and sebaceous glands as being in the same area. But like sebum, sweat actually has a bit of a peeling effect, and many people find that if left on the skin, it causes itchiness. So it's really important to wipe away sweat frequently. That's why lately I need hand towels a lot, since I'm washing my hands more often. I used to prefer soft, fluffy towels with a nice texture, but recently I've been using towels to blot, or tissues to blot—for example, if I had a tissue right here like this, I'd blot it like this. This is what's become normal for me. Blot like this—don't rub, just blot gently. I think doing it this way is best.
Thank you again for answering my questions. The other day, a friend of mine applied lotion to her body after a bath, then followed with body cream. She said that just like the face, the body can't produce its own moisture, so you need to apply lotion before body cream. What do you think, doctor? And if that's true, could you recommend a body lotion? In principle, that's true, but ultimately it comes down to how you want your skin to look. If you have really dry skin, doing that would be good, but honestly, most people don't have time for all that. So I think body cream or body oil alone is fine, but it's true that if you spray on lotion first and then apply body cream, the texture of your skin improves a lot. So it depends on how beautiful you want your body to look. I'd recommend something you can use in large quantities—I mentioned Cezanne's product before, but I also use Muji's spray bottle, spritzing it on, and also Curél's spray-type lotion. Did you know that one is actually amazing? I'm planning to make a video about it so I won't go into too much detail, but apparently it took about seven years to develop—I was so surprised. I really am planning to make a video about this. Also, Curél just released a new sheet mask. It's not yet available nationwide—it's only sold online starting this July. I was surprised, thinking 'wait, didn't Curél already have this?' and when I looked into it, it turns out this one is amazing too. The amazing technology used in it actually originated from the development of that spray—learning about this whole grand history made me want to make a detailed video about it. So I think using products like these would be a good idea.
Hello, doctor, I always watch your videos. When I apply emulsion and sunscreen, my face feels sticky, so I use baby powder at the end. I also apply it after emulsion before going to bed at night—is using baby powder before sleep not good? Also, does using baby powder during the day make you more prone to sunburn? I'd appreciate your advice. There's nothing inherently wrong with baby powder, but if the stickiness after applying emulsion bothers you, I think you might be using too much emulsion. So how about reducing the amount, or only applying it to certain areas? I think that would work better.
I'm going camping this weekend. That's nice, I'm a little jealous! The next morning, due to various circumstances, I won't be washing my face and plan to just wipe it instead. I don't like the friction from wiping and would normally avoid it, but if you were in a situation where you couldn't wash your face, what would you do, doctor? And if you did wipe, what products would you use? Well, it's a bit pricey, but Clé de Peau just released a facial wipe sheet. It's truly groundbreaking—it just lifts everything off with barely any touching. I only saw it at a launch event and haven't been able to buy it myself yet since it's sold out. So I don't have it in hand yet, but from what I saw at the event, it seemed nearly friction-free, and it's formulated with ingredients that actually help correct disrupted skin cell patterns caused by cleansing. So if it were me, I'd buy the Clé de Peau cleansing sheet. I used to be firmly against facial wipes, but this Clé de Peau one seems like the exception. Also, situations like camping, or even in the case of a disaster, there are times you simply can't wash your face. So I think it's good to have one of these sheets on hand just in case. That's why I'm planning to buy the Clé de Peau one myself.
Thanks to your videos, the acne scars and red acne all over my back have been improving—thank you! I'm glad to hear that, that makes me happy. Could you tell me the most effective acne scar and red acne treatment menu available at dermatology clinics? You mean for the back, right? In that case, I think peeling treatments would be the most effective. Of course, for the face, light therapy is an option, but treating the entire back with light therapy can get quite costly, so I'd recommend starting with peeling treatments. Also, laser hair removal on the back can significantly reduce acne breakouts, so that might be worth looking into as well.
Dr. Tomori, good evening. I'm considering under-eye fat removal surgery. I've heard that removing the existing fat under the eyes can lead to crepey wrinkles or deep wrinkles forming in that area—like a balloon that wrinkles when it deflates. After fat removal surgery, do many people get hyaluronic acid filler afterward? It does happen, but honestly, I always wonder about that approach. It depends on the amount of fat removed, but if there's sagging, I think it's better to use a tightening laser—like Eye Thermage, which specifically targets the area around the eyes—to firm up the skin. Or, if the skin has really stretched out, you'd need actual surgery to remove the excess and stitch it together. Because if you go through the trouble of removing the fat and then just put filler back in, it kind of defeats the purpose, right? So I think it's better to properly address the sagging through tightening treatments as well.
I'm bothered by shine on my skin, so I'm using Orbis Mr.'s lotion. I've heard moisturizing is important—do I also need an emulsion? Orbis's Mr. lotion, the men's line, is designed with a concept of providing thorough moisture, so I think it's really good. But if you're concerned about shine, and you feel your skin is already sufficiently moisturized and has a protective film just from the lotion alone, then you could use emulsion just around the eyes, but I don't think you need to apply it to your entire face.
