Hello everyone, this is Arata Tomori. Today I'd like to introduce emulsions and creams recommended for hot seasons. If you think your skin is dry inside even when it's hot, this is a must-watch. It's been incredibly hot this summer, isn't it? When it's hot, we sweat, so it feels like our skin is being moisturized. However, sweat and sebum are different, so sweating doesn't actually moisturize your skin. Sebum is also produced, so if the creams or emulsions you've been using feel too heavy, and yet not applying anything makes your skin feel dry inside, many people struggle with this. I often talk about myself as a representative oily-skinned person, so when people ask if just toner is enough for oily skin, the surface is shiny with sebum but the inside is dry. In such cases, emulsions and creams that don't clog pores and work for oily skin are increasingly available. Let me introduce them today. First up is Kiehl's Herbal Emulsion CL. If you haven't tried it, please check it out. It's from Kiehl's Calendula series, and calendula is a yellow flower with strong anti-inflammatory properties. It's perfect for those whose skin gets inflamed from sebum, and since UV exposure also causes inflammation, it's great for reducing inflammation. But it's not just about inflammation—it contains many ingredients that support oily skin. First, there's panthenol and vitamin B5, which repair and calm inflammation. Then there's niacinamide, which is famous for anti-inflammatory and whitening effects, and also helps suppress sebum. Another ingredient is pyridoxine, which is vitamin B6, and it suppresses sebum. You know how people say to drink ChocolaBB when you have acne? That's because it supplements B vitamins. Vitamin B6 pyridoxine suppresses sebum, so when there's a lot of acne, taking B vitamins, especially B6, helps control sebum. And this vitamin B6 is included in Kiehl's Herbal Collection. Niacinamide and pyridoxine work together to suppress sebum. When people think of sebum and pores, they often think of vitamin C, but this contains B vitamins instead. Then there's salicylic acid. Specifically, it contains LHA, a Loreal-exclusive salicylic acid derivative. Compared to glycolic acid and lactic acid, salicylic acid dissolves more easily in sebum, so it's perfect for oily skin. Additionally, it slightly softens keratin, so you won't feel any stinging, and it provides gentle exfoliation. When there's a lot of sebum and keratin becomes thick, sebum accumulates in pores causing congestion. So you need to suppress sebum while thinning out the keratin layer. That's why including LHA is really recommended for oily skin concerned about pores, and the triple B vitamins that suppress sebum in hot weather are wonderful. Calendula, the yellow flower I mentioned, contains petal extract in the Herbal Emulsion with five anti-inflammatory compounds: saponins, luteol, alpha-amyrin, quercetin, and beta-amyrin. These five ingredients work together to reduce inflammation. Since UV rays are very strong, anti-inflammatory action is essential. When applied, you might think it's a thick cream-like texture for an emulsion, but when you apply it—and only oily-skinned people will understand this—it's incredibly refreshing and not greasy at all. It leaves skin feeling like you just applied toner. Moisture goes in properly without any film-forming feeling. Emulsions usually form a film because of their oil content, but this uses non-comedogenic oils that don't clog pores, and there's zero greasiness. Even though you apply it generously, notice how it doesn't stick? It properly moisturizes and hydrates, but feels completely matte. Even I, when my skin is extremely oily, use the Calendula series and I'm amazed every time. Next is Transino's Medicinal Brightening Clear Milk. When you hear Transino, you think of tranexamic acid, right? Tranexamic acid has both anti-inflammatory and melanin-suppressing whitening effects. Just that alone makes it perfect for this season. But that's not all. This also has a non-comedogenic formula suitable for hot weather. First, it contains keratin-softening ingredients. Rather than salicylic acid or lactic acid, it's a fruit acid extract from plants. The ingredient name is fermented pear juice. So rather than a peeling action, it softens keratin. Plants with ingredients that soften keratin are similar to Takami serums, for example. Since UV exposure thickens keratin in summer, leading to pore congestion, using this preventatively is good. Another ingredient is trehalose, which suppresses pore visibility. Trehalose suppresses sebum secretion from pores, so by including it, you can expect to reduce the appearance of pores caused by sebum production. It's unusual for an emulsion to have this. While it's not non-comedogenic, it has a formulation with minimal greasiness. It's cream-like, but it spreads well when applied. Compared to Kiehl's, there's somewhat more of a film-forming feeling. However, it's not truly moisturizing, so if you have oily skin and want some film-forming sensation, Transino is good. That said, after application, there's some stickiness, but it doesn't feel constantly adhered. The moisturization from oils is more noticeable than Kiehl's. Since Transino has whitening that Kiehl's lacks, if you absolutely don't want visible pores and deal with acne but want hydration, Kiehl's is better. But if you want both whitening and film-forming sensation, Transino seems right. Both are excellent for reducing inflammation. Next is a cream: Estara's Adbaria 365 Hydro Cream. Estara has several sensitive skin lines, and the Adbaria series includes unique amino acids needed for sensitive skin. Among sensitive skin types, those lacking moisture often find regular sensitive creams too oily, so in summer they become greasy, potentially causing acne-like breakouts or itching from greasiness. This Hydro Cream is essentially a hydrating cream, so while it contains unique amino acids that strengthen skin barrier function, rather than forming an oil film, it uses a hydrating cream approach to form a film. Estara discovered that certain sensitive skin types lack glutamic acid among amino acids, and this product is formulated with glutamic acid. When applied, you'd think it's a regular cream, but it becomes transparent when layered, and "hydrating cream" really describes it perfectly. Since it's for sensitive skin, it feels softer. With amino acids caring for barrier function, you feel protected. Of the three introduced today, this might be the one where you most feel hydration. It's a strange sensation to feel hydration from a cream, but it's like having plump moisture under the film. If Kiehl's is a zero, Transino is about 4. Adbaria feels like a 2. It's not as matte, but forms a moisturizing film. Next is Acseine's Day Treatment Protection. As a personal best cosmetic I recommend in cream rankings, it works for both oily and dry skin. The thing is, it's only a day cream, so you can't use it at night—that's the downside. Conversely, it's a day cream with SPF, so it's good for this season. It contains beta-chitin nanofibers made from squid backbones. When cells become inflamed or damaged, these protect and repair them, forming a film. Under that film is hyaluronic acid, so it moisturizes with hyaluronic acid while sealing with beta-chitin nanofibers. Beta-chitin nanofibers absorb sebum and solidify further, so sebum doesn't break down the film. Additionally, if sebum appears, beta-chitin nanofibers block it, so it blocks the surface while suppressing sebum and preventing water evaporation. Normally, oil films suppress water loss, but since this is a polysaccharide, it forms a film without affecting sebum—which is innovative. Plus, despite being a cream, it's non-comedogenic. It's great for oily skin or pore concerns. I don't think glycerin itself is bad, but lately many people find that glycerin makes pores appear larger, so it's glycerin-free for those people. Some people also experience pore clogging, so it's not used. So despite being a cream, it's considerate toward those with pore or sebum concerns. Is it bad for dry skin? Under the beta-chitin nanofibers, hyaluronic acid and ceramides are well-supplied, and the hydrating film from non-oil beta-chitin nanofibers suppresses water loss, so it supports dry and sensitive skin too. So honestly, these three suit combination skin. Perhaps dry skin users might find hydration insufficient, but this Acseine is a cream that supports oily, dry, and sensitive skin alike. It's a pinkish-beige color that gives a brightening effect. The surface feels smooth. Whether from beta-chitin nanofiber's power or not, it feels smooth, different from the three mentioned earlier. Yet it provides the most cream-like moisturizing feel. Surprisingly, despite all this, it's not greasy at all. Being the most moisturizing while not greasy is really great for this season. To summarize, this season is difficult because UV rays are strong, causing inflammation and barrier function decline leading to dryness. But overlaying oils increases sebum, causing pore congestion—it's a tricky season. We've introduced products with anti-inflammatory ingredients, sebum-suppressing ingredients, water barriers instead of oil, and polysaccharide nanofiber barriers to address these issues. Depending on whether you have combination, oily, or sensitive skin needing hydration, or multiple concerns, you can choose accordingly. This season absolutely requires hydration, and how to form the right film is the challenge, so please check out these products. How was that?
