Hello everyone, this is Yuri Tomori. Today I want to take a deep dive into Shiseido's sensitive skin brand "d program," which has just been renewed. When it comes to sensitive skin brands, Kao has Curél and Shiseido has d program, for example. Today I'll talk about the differences between them and how to choose which one to use, so if you have sensitive skin or skin that tends to fluctuate, please watch until the end. The d program I'm diving into today is Shiseido's sensitive skin brand that's actually been around for over 20 years, so it has quite a history. With this renewal, it's now organized into three series, and I think the pore/acne lines have been combined into one, making it easier to understand with three clear types. Speaking of sensitive skin brands, there's also Kao's Curél. Most people who say "I have sensitive skin" tend to use Curél. Curél always states it's "for dry sensitive skin." Basically, it's a skincare brand for people whose barrier function has declined due to dryness. What Curél contains is Kao's proprietary pseudo-ceramide, added generously to care for dry sensitive skin. So Curél is the brand that people whose sensitivity is rooted in dryness should use. On the other hand, what is Shiseido's d program about? It originally started from the concept that "sensitive skin tends to develop inflammation easily." There are many types of sensitive skin, but when you ask what sensitive skin fundamentally is, Shiseido's research started from the premise that the base issue is a tendency toward inflammation. The core active ingredient is tranexamic acid. Tranexamic acid is often associated with whitening or preventing skin roughness, but Shiseido was actually the first to receive approval for its efficacy in preventing skin roughness. Shiseido got approval for tranexamic acid as effective in preventing skin roughness and suppressing inflammation, and that's the ingredient that's been in d program from the start. So, even though tranexamic acid prevents skin roughness and suppresses inflammation, they also had to think about how to address dryness, just like Curél does. Curél adds ceramide, the main component of intercellular lipids. What did Shiseido think about? First, they focused on cleaning up the shape of the "cornified envelope"—the square shape of stratum corneum cells—by adding their proprietary ingredients firmly. The basic concept of d program is to clean up the cell shape so that intercellular lipids adhere better, add tranexamic acid to suppress inflammation, and boost barrier function that way. Even among people with sensitive skin—whether they want moisture, anti-aging care, or are troubled by pores and acne—the foundation is the same: suppress inflammation while firmly shaping the stratum corneum cells to strengthen barrier function. If you want more moisture, they add plenty of hyaluronic acid; for anti-aging, they add basement membrane care ingredients; for acne concerns, they've always included ingredients that suppress pore inflammation. What's been upgraded this time is the approach to help granular layer cells produce more intercellular lipids. You might think that increasing intercellular lipids would mean more oil and a stickier feel, but intercellular lipids and sebum are completely different things. Intercellular lipids are more like the source of moisture, and despite having "lipid" in the name, they don't clog pores, so it's actually better to help the skin produce more of them. The ingredient they've uniquely added this time is xylitol. As cells transition from the granular layer to the stratum corneum, intercellular lipids increase, filling in the gaps and strengthening barrier function. Ceramide is oil-soluble, which is why it can feel sticky, but since the skin can produce its own ceramide and intercellular lipids, the texture stays light for both. This seems great for people with inner dryness or those who don't like a sticky feel. Another unique aspect of d program is their research into the skin's resident bacteria (microbiome). Just like gut bacteria, it's not good for the skin to have just one type of bacteria. There's a "beautiful skin bacteria" called Staphylococcus epidermidis, but having only that isn't good either. Acne bacteria is often cited as a "bad" bacteria, but having only acne bacteria isn't good either—balance is really important. The key point is having diversity among resident bacteria. Having some acne bacteria, some Staphylococcus epidermidis, and various other bacteria all present is known to be linked to good skin barrier function. This time, Shiseido discovered that people with declining barrier function have an increase in a certain bacteria—Cutibacterium acnes (acne bacteria). Among acne bacteria, there are both good and bad-acting strains, and they found that the bad-acting strains reduce Staphylococcus epidermidis. The bad acne bacteria destroy this diversity. When bad acne bacteria increase, it disrupts the balance of resident bacteria, causing barrier function to decline. So rather than suppressing all acne bacteria, they focused on suppressing only the bad-acting ones. That's where Alteromonas ferment extract comes in, newly incorporated into d program this time. By reducing the bad acne bacteria, diversity is restored and barrier function improves. So, balancing the resident bacteria on the skin's surface, suppressing internal inflammation with tranexamic acid to strengthen barrier function, enabling the skin to produce its own intercellular lipids deeper down to boost barrier function further, and shaping the stratum corneum cells properly—addressing barrier function at every layer is what d program is all about, I think. Additionally, it's divided into skin types for moisture, anti-aging, and oily/acne concerns, so whether you have sensitive but oily skin, or sensitive skin plus a desire for anti-aging care, you can choose based on your type, and it approaches the issue from multiple angles. Common ingredients across the line include tranexamic acid, ingredients that strengthen the cornified envelope, xylitol which helps produce intercellular lipids, and Alteromonas ferment extract which balances the diversity of resident bacteria. This one is the pore/acne care line with a light, watery texture. It's simple care with just lotion and emulsion, but both are non-comedogenic, meaning they don't easily cause acne—great news for anyone concerned about pores or acne. Tranexamic acid suppresses inflammation, but people with excess sebum tend to develop inflammation around the pores too, so they've included rehmannia extract to address that. Allantoin is included to calm sebum-related inflammation, and loquat leaf extract to calm acne inflammation, so while strengthening barrier function, it also thoroughly addresses sebum-related troubles. This is the anti-aging line. Unlike the other lines where tranexamic acid is only for preventing skin roughness, this line alone also has approved efficacy for whitening. My own theory—which may or may not be true—is that the whitening formula might have a slightly higher concentration. It also contains Ononis extract for basement membrane care, which helps repair the basement membrane and restore firmness—basement membrane care is such a nice bonus. It also includes Bupleurum (saiko) extract to promote collagen production, and Saxifraga (snow-under) extract for radiance, so dullness and firmness can actually be addressed with these two products, making it a great recommendation for anyone with sensitive skin who also wants anti-aging care. And if dryness is a concern, hyaluronic acid is included, along with petrolatum that forms a veil on the skin's surface, helping to lock in moisture securely. Usually, when a product line is renewed, the price goes up, right? But surprisingly, the price has actually gone down this time—a mysterious move by Shiseido, but people with sensitive skin often only have one product they can use, and have to keep using it long-term. I feel like this reflects consideration for that reality, which is a lovely touch. Since switching between many products can also cause irritation, having a simple lineup that still addresses various concerns is wonderful. So whether you have sensitive skin, want to simplify your routine, want to keep costs down, or are experiencing skin fluctuations during seasonal changes, I highly recommend checking this out. So, what did you think? Since the approaches are different, I hope this helps you figure out which type of care suits you best.
