Hello everyone! I'm Toa, a physician specializing in internal medicine and dermatology. Today, we're talking about mask-induced skin problems. While masks remain essential for infection control, the truth is they're not particularly kind to our skin. In this video, I'll explain the different types of mask-related skin issues and recommend skincare products suited to each type, so please watch until the end. First, let's review why masks cause skin problems. You might think that covering your skin protects it, but there are actually two main issues. The first is physical friction from the mask rubbing against your skin. The second is that your breath creates moisture inside the mask, keeping it in a humid, stuffy state. This prolonged humidity affects the outermost protective layer of the skin — the skin barrier. The barrier is formed by layers of cells called the stratum corneum, stacked like bricks and held together by a substance called intercellular lipids. This structure prevents water loss from inside the skin and protects against external irritants. However, when humidity from the mask persists, these intercellular lipids are washed away, allowing irritants to penetrate and causing moisture to evaporate, leading to dryness and a weakened skin barrier. There are three main types of mask-induced skin problems: 1. Acne breakouts 2. Persistent dryness and rough skin texture 3. Itching, redness, or sensitivity to skincare products All three stem from the same root cause — friction and barrier damage — but the symptoms differ based on your natural skin type. People with oily skin respond to dryness by producing excess sebum to compensate, which leads to clogged pores and acne. People with dry to normal skin don't produce enough sebum, so dryness worsens. The skin tries to speed up cell turnover to produce more intercellular lipids, but the resulting immature cells lead to an uneven stratum corneum and rough skin texture. Sensitive skin types go even further — the stratum corneum can't keep up, and external irritants trigger redness and itching. The key ingredient for all three types is ceramide. Since ceramide is the main component of intercellular lipids, replenishing it is crucial for combating mask-induced dryness and barrier damage. Here are my recommended products for each skin type: 【Product 1】 Curel Sebum Trouble Care Moisturizing Gel Best for: Acne-prone and inner-dry skin types This product features Kao's proprietary pseudo-ceramide (hexadecyloxy PG hydroxyethyl hexadecanamide) in high concentrations to restore the skin barrier. It also contains hydroxyundecanoic acid, which regulates excess sebum production. This dual action — moisturizing from within while controlling surface oiliness — makes it ideal for those who feel dry underneath but experience breakouts and shine on the surface. The lightweight, non-greasy texture makes it comfortable to wear even under a mask. 【Product 2】 ASTALIFT Jelly Aquarysta Best for: Those experiencing dryness, rough skin texture, and loss of radiance Made by Fujifilm, this serum leverages the company's advanced nano-technology — originally developed for film production — to reduce human-identical ceramide to the world's smallest particle size, allowing it to penetrate deeply into the stratum corneum while remaining stable. Beyond just supplying ceramide from the outside, it also contains Uncaria Extract, which activates ceramide transporters in the skin's lower layers, boosting the skin's own ceramide production. This combination of external supplementation and enhanced self-production helps restore skin texture and luminosity. It is the priciest of the three, but its performance reflects the investment. 【Product 3】 ALUAGE Moist Treatment Gel Best for: Sensitive skin with itching, redness, or product intolerance Unlike the previous two products, this one uses traditional natural ceramide for barrier repair. It is formulated to be extremely gentle: fragrance-free, colorant-free, alcohol-free, paraben-free, mildly acidic, and allergy-tested. Anti-inflammatory ingredients are also included to soothe irritated skin, while the ceramide content addresses dryness. This is the go-to choice for those whose skin has become so sensitized that even their regular skincare products cause stinging or discomfort. In summary, mask-induced skin problems manifest differently depending on your skin type. Choosing skincare products that address your specific symptoms — particularly those containing ceramide — can help prevent and improve mask-related skin issues. I hope this was helpful!
