Ahh, delicious! Kirin's Gogo no Kocha (Afternoon Tea) really is tasty, isn't it. So today I want to talk about how this Afternoon Tea might actually be related to skin whitening! But just drinking Afternoon Tea and getting whiter skin—it's not actually that simple. Do you all remember? I think I touched on this before. Afternoon Tea is made by Kirin, and Kirin has actually been doing joint research with the cosmetics company FANCL. I previously introduced FANCL's Mild Cleansing Wash, a cleanser that also removes blackheads. It contains an aged hop extract derived from Kirin's beer, which breaks down the proteins that form the base of blackheads—this aged hop extract, provided by Kirin, is included in the Mild Cleansing Wash. This time, it turns out that Kirin's Afternoon Tea is related to FANCL's new whitening skincare line. Pretty amazing, right? This time, FANCL has renewed and released a serum and a sheet mask. These are the "FANCL Brightening Essence" and "Brightening Mask." The essence has a somewhat thick, lotion-like texture that absorbs smoothly into the skin. The sheet mask comes individually wrapped—since FANCL products don't contain preservatives, each brightening sheet mask is packaged separately like this. Here's what FANCL focused on this time: in our bodies, melanocytes produce melanin, but there isn't just a signal saying "make melanin"—there's also actually a signal that says "it's time to stop making so much melanin." Of course, they also focus on preventing melanin production in the first place, but this time they focused on how to send the signal to stop excessive melanin production. Inside melanocytes, there's an abundance of a longevity gene called Sirtuin 3. This gene is said to send a signal to stop excessive melanin production once it has been overproduced. In other words, if Sirtuin 3 activity is functioning properly, it can suppress melanin that has been produced in excess. Completely eliminating melanin from the root sounds scary, like vitiligo, but this approach only suppresses the excess amount, using the body's own natural function—so there's no need to worry about that. So they researched what could activate this Sirtuin 3, and arrived at a polyphenol called theaflavin. Theaflavin is a type of polyphenol that can't be extracted from ordinary black tea—it's one of the polyphenols produced specifically when extracting Kirin's Afternoon Tea. This was actually published as a paper, presented as proprietary technology at the 40th Annual Meeting of the Japanese Society of Aesthetic Dermatology, showing that activating Sirtuin 3 suppresses melanin production. Isn't that amazing? I was genuinely surprised when I saw the presentation. I thought, "So can I just drink Afternoon Tea and get the same effect?" But unfortunately, after extracting Afternoon Tea, this theaflavin is removed. Apparently it doesn't taste very good. That's exactly why the removed theaflavin is being used as a cosmetic ingredient in this serum and mask. Unfortunately, just drinking Afternoon Tea won't whiten your skin, but the extracted component is what's used in FANCL's Brightening Essence and Brightening Mask. I think it's a fascinating, unprecedented approach—using the body's own function to suppress excess melanin production rather than blocking it outright—and it feels very characteristic of FANCL's perspective. Beyond the theaflavin developed jointly with Kirin, there's another interesting finding. FANCL noticed that in areas where dark spots form, skin turnover doesn't properly move upward—it moves sideways instead. What's involved in this "sideways" movement is a protein called Numb, which induces vertical cell division. It turns out that Numb is reduced in spot-affected areas, so the signal to "move upward" doesn't get sent properly, causing cells to move sideways instead. They found that increasing Numb promotes vertical division and properly boosts skin turnover, and discovered that a "guanine derivative" ingredient promotes the induction of Numb, which they've now incorporated into the product. In other words, this approach naturally promotes your own skin turnover while also using Sirtuin 3's function to suppress spot formation from within. This guanine derivative is abundant in "Artemia extract," derived from a species that lives in highly saline lakes. Since this extract contains guanine derivatives, it's known to increase Numb, which supports vertical cell division. Interesting fact: this Artemia extract is also known to help improve dullness/dinginess in the skin. So while promoting turnover, it may also help address the skin dullness that becomes more noticeable as we age. Additionally, the Brightening line properly includes active whitening ingredients. These are a vitamin C derivative called "vitamin C glucoside" and an anti-inflammatory ingredient called glycyrrhizinic acid. Vitamin C provides antioxidant and whitening effects, while glycyrrhizinic acid also helps calm inflammation. To help vitamin C be properly absorbed into the skin, grapefruit extract is also included. This grapefruit extract has a function that supports the intracellular uptake of vitamin C, so they've clearly also focused on ensuring proper penetration. To sum up, this product has two "secret sauce" highlights. One is Artemia extract, which increases Numb to support vertical division and promote turnover. The other is theaflavin, jointly developed with Kirin. On top of that, there's a vitamin C derivative and glycyrrhizinic acid—altogether, it's a formula packed with quite a lot of active ingredients. If you're someone who's concerned about both dark spots and dullness, I think this could be a great option for you. And of course, if you're a fan of Afternoon Tea... well, that's not really relevant, haha. My husband actually loves Afternoon Tea and drinks it all the time, so this makes for a fun little tidbit to share with him—"did you know this has Afternoon Tea in it?" So if you're curious, I'd definitely recommend checking it out. So, what did you think? If you found today's content interesting, please leave a comment below. See you in the next video—bye!
