Hello everyone, this is Arata Tomori. There are people who take various supplements for anti-aging, and recently these so-called "longevity supplements" have become a hot topic. Today, I'd like to talk about the truth behind these longevity supplements.
When you think of longevity supplements, NMN probably comes to mind right away. I often get questions on my YouTube channel like "Doctor, what about NMN?" or "Should I take NMN?" I haven't really touched on this topic much before, but today I want to properly explain the truth about these so-called longevity supplements—whether they actually work, how you should take them if they do work, and how certain ways of taking them might actually be meaningless. I might get some criticism for saying this, but I want to explain it thoroughly, so please watch until the end.
Let's start right away. I think NMN is the representative example of longevity supplements. Phrases like "you'll stop aging as quickly" or "it's essential for anti-aging" were popular—I think NMN became a big trend about 5 years ago. Rather than clearly making you look younger, it's more for people who have trouble recovering from fatigue or take a long time to recover, to help them stay energetic. When you ask people who take NMN what effects they notice, it's things like feeling less tired, or waking up feeling better—not things like wrinkles clearly disappearing, spots disappearing, or skin becoming firmer. I think it's more like an image of supplementing the energy deficiency from inside the body, like returning to how you felt when you were young.
And that image is exactly right. Many people feel this kind of physical unwellness—like before, even if you woke up tired, you wouldn't feel this exhausted, or you'd recover after a good night's sleep. The fact that this ability gradually declines is because it's becoming harder and harder for our bodies to produce energy—that's the big issue.
Our bodies are made up of about 37 trillion cells that together create one human being. Each of these cells produces energy, and these cells communicate with each other to function as a living organism—allowing us to move energetically, talk in front of a camera like this, and do many other things. Also, a single cell doesn't last a lifetime; it's constantly being renewed into new cells. Just like skin has a well-known turnover cycle, cells are constantly being renewed this way too.
However, this renewal process also requires energy. Our cells need energy both to maintain the body's functions and to create new things.
So how is this energy produced? There's an organelle inside cells called mitochondria. Oxygen is supplied to these mitochondria, and that's where ATP, the cell's energy, is produced. When ATP is properly produced, for example in the skin, skin turnover normalizes; in the dermis, cells are more likely to be generated, giving firmness; and in the scalp, when ATP isn't produced, things like gray hair increase.
For us to keep this energy properly flowing—both in appearance and in terms of staying youthful functionally—these mitochondria need to properly produce energy, or none of it means anything.
Previously, approaches were more like taking vitamin C alone for antioxidant purposes, or vitamin D to strengthen bones and regulate immunity—addressing each symptom individually. For example, taking astaxanthin to suppress melanin production triggered by UV exposure. That was the approach. But if the cell's energy is fundamentally high to begin with, even if there's melanin, proper turnover will occur and get rid of it properly. Similarly, taking low-molecular collagen to increase collagen is of course one approach, but if the cells that produce collagen are themselves energetic, they'll constantly produce collagen. Of course materials are necessary, but without proper energy, stimulating cells is meaningless. Taking a bird's-eye view rather than looking at individual symptoms, and looking at the whole picture, the current trend is to focus on raising the cellular energy level.
At this point, some of you may have already noticed—as we age, the production of ATP in mitochondria declines. This is due to both a decline in mitochondrial function itself and a decrease in the number of mitochondria. It's said that this mitochondrial mutation and decline phenomenon appears around age 40. And apparently, by age 60 and above, it drops to about half.
So even if you do the same things, if it's cut in half, the energy production capacity is cut in half too. Doing the same things leads to more fatigue, sun exposure directly leads to spots, and the same sun exposure breaks down collagen leading to sagging. This is what leads to aging and physical unwellness.
This is where NMN, which has become famous as a longevity supplement, comes in. What does it do? When NMN enters the body, it converts into a substance called NAD—nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide. Since I probably can't say that whole name again, I'll just call it NAD. NMN converts into NAD once inside the body.
Now it gets a bit complicated. Mitochondria have various pathways for producing ATP, and one of them is called the electron transport chain. NAD plays a crucial role there by carrying electrons. Essentially, it's like NAD pushes forward the electron transport chain, the energy-producing pathway within mitochondria. So when you take NMN, it converts to NAD in the body, and when NAD increases, the electron transport chain pathway that produces energy in mitochondria gets activated, resulting in an image of producing more energy.
To put it simply, mitochondria are like factories that produce energy, so it's like increasing the number of factory workers. This allows mitochondria to produce energy much more efficiently. So even if mitochondria are cut in half by age 60, if they work twice as hard, you can still manage.
NMN is also produced within the body, but it too decreases with age in the same way, so it's important to properly supplement it and keep the electron transport chain in mitochondria running smoothly. This is what made NMN suddenly famous.
Besides NMN, there are other things that support this electron transport chain, like coenzyme Q10, which was popular a while back, or 5-ALA, which helps run the enzymes necessary for ATP production. But basically, by properly taking NMN, the factory runs efficiently. So whether it's coenzyme Q10, 5-ALA, or NMN, taking something that supports this mitochondrial electron transport chain is very important for energizing mitochondria to some extent for longevity purposes and properly producing energy.
So does taking NMN mean everything's perfect? There's actually one more big problem. When mitochondria run the electron transport chain and other processes to produce ATP, they also produce unwanted byproducts. Just like factories producing products also generate exhaust gas and wastewater, mitochondria, in producing the energy called ATP, inevitably produce something called reactive oxygen species in the process. These reactive oxygen species damage the mitochondria themselves. This gradually weakens their function. So the harder you work the electron transport chain by taking NMN, the more mitochondria get damaged.
So if you're only taking NMN, there's quite an issue with reactive oxygen species, which is why most NMN products are taken together with vitamin C. But even so, mitochondrial aging progresses due to reactive oxygen species, and since mitochondria themselves are cut in half by around age 60, there's a limit to how much you can push against this aging process.
So recently, focus has shifted to ingredients that newly generate mitochondria themselves. That's PQQ—pyrroloquinoline quinone—which has become a hot topic recently. PQQ works to create new mitochondria, the factories themselves. It increases the mitochondria that have decreased with aging, and it also revives mitochondria that have become unusable due to damage from reactive oxygen species produced while working hard to make ATP. So personally, while NMN is important, I also think it's important to take antioxidant ingredients like vitamin C for reactive oxygen species countermeasures, as well as other flavonoids like astaxanthin. And in addition, since the mitochondria factories themselves decrease in number, we also need to take PQQ for mitochondrial biogenesis. So simply put, it's quite difficult for just one thing to cover everything.
I've talked about NMN, antioxidant ingredients, and PQQ so far, but as more is discovered about mitochondrial function and what happens due to aging, there's a possibility that other things will become necessary too. I want you to keep that in mind.
This time I focused on mitochondria, but aging isn't just about declining energy—it's also about senescent cells being generated within cells. These senescent cells stop the cells themselves from functioning, essentially halting the cells regardless of energy levels, and this generation of senescent cells also contributes to aging.
What's become clear recently is how to suppress these senescent cells, and that's an ingredient called Agrimonol, derived from Agrimonia (kinmizuhiki). Data suggests this ingredient itself can help eliminate senescent cells. There's still much unknown about what's correct, and aging hasn't been fully elucidated enough for just one thing to cover everything. So if you're feeling low on energy, I think it's very important to take things that remove senescent cells, or PQQ and NMN to energize the mitochondria themselves. But essentially, to prevent cells from becoming senescent or decreasing, it's also important to reduce stress, exercise moderately, watch your diet, and in terms of skin, be mindful of UV exposure. Doing these things won't guarantee a complete prevention, but I think it's better to do things that make it harder for these declines to happen.
So, unwellness in general is an SOS signal from within your body. It might mean you're lacking energy, which could be because your mitochondria aren't functioning properly, or because you have many senescent cells in your body. So rather than dealing with it after becoming sick, in order to raise energy at the cellular level, the ingredients I talked about today are available in supplement form, so please check them out. Also, please be mindful of your lifestyle and diet so that your energy doesn't decline.
Alright, thank you very much for watching until the end today. See you in the next video. Goodbye. Bye-bye.
