Transcript (English)
Hello everyone. I'm Arata Tomori, an internal medicine and dermatologist. Today, I would like to make a self-introduction video about who I, Arata Tomori, am. As for the introduction itself, I'd also like to talk about why I started YouTube, how I plan to continue YouTube, and which people I refer to or benchmark when starting YouTube, so please watch until the end. Well, let me introduce myself again. I'm Arata Tomori, working as an internist and dermatologist. I was born in Miyakojima, Okinawa Prefecture. Some of you may have visited there. The population is about 55,000 people, and it's a place where everyone knows their classmates. I attended elementary and middle school in Miyakojima, attended high school on Okinawa's main island at Okinawa Girls' High School, and then came to Tokyo for university. However, when I first came to Tokyo, I had never even seen or ridden a train before. I attended the Tokyo Women's Medical University, which is located in Shinjuku. You might know Shinjuku Station, but I really didn't understand how to use the train or how to make transfers. For example, if I got on the Yamanote Line and then wanted to get on the Chuo Line, I thought I had to go through the ticket barrier each time. I was 18 years old when I moved to Tokyo alone, so no one taught me how to use the train. Every single time, I thought transfers were so hard that I would take the Yamanote Line, get off at Shinjuku, and then buy a ticket from Shinjuku Station to Harajuku separately. I did this for about a month until I finally figured out what a transfer actually was. I was so clueless at that age. After coming to Tokyo at 18, I attended Tokyo Women's Medical University for six years. After studying infectious diseases at an infectious disease center, I transferred to dermatology due to various circumstances. Even now, I continue to practice internal medicine in Tokyo. I do regular insurance medicine, seeing general patients with colds and infectious diseases. Separately, I also work at beauty dermatology clinics. One is Omotesando Skin Clinic, and the other is Shiono Clinic in Ebisu, where I also provide beauty consultations.
Additionally, for about the past 12 to 13 years, I have been writing articles for beauty magazines and serving as a judge for best cosmetics awards. This has given me a network with PR teams from cosmetic companies. This is how I stay up to date with the latest information about cosmetics. Being a judge for the best cosmetics awards and writing articles for beauty magazines has allowed me to stay current with the latest beauty information and skincare products.
I was born on March 30, 1978, and I'm 42 years old. I'm married and have three children—a son and two daughters. So while I do beauty work, I'm also properly raising my family and dealing with the challenges of parenthood every day.
As for what prompted me to start YouTube, there were many reasons. While the rise of YouTube was certainly a factor, I really wanted to start YouTube around 2019. As I've mentioned before, while working in the beauty industry, writing articles, and judging best cosmetics, I realized that cosmetics are developed through extensive research by scientists who pour their heart and soul into these products. When I voted for what I thought was a great cosmetic in best cosmetics contests, sometimes it wouldn't win due to various adult circumstances. When I tried to write articles highlighting the researchers' dedication to these wonderful products, I often couldn't due to legal restrictions and other issues. This created a dilemma: people choosing skincare didn't understand the differences between products. Why is Product A so much more expensive than Product B? If A and B cost the same, which one should I choose? I wanted to communicate this somehow. Initially, I tried using a blog and Instagram. Since many people watch Instagram stories, I would attend product launch events and post my thoughts and observations about them. However, posts often became too long. When you write a lot on Instagram, people don't like it, and no one reads or views it. Additionally, I kept repeating the same information about sun protection, proper facial cleansing, and correct skincare routines in beauty magazines. It seemed like people were asking the same questions repeatedly. I had a dilemma: maybe the message isn't reaching the people I want to reach. If I could communicate through video instead of just text, I could reach people of all ages. So from last year, I planned and prepared to start YouTube.
I looked at YouTube and watched several beauty YouTubers, including Risa Sekine, Asahi Sasaki, and Cai Jerry. They're all incredibly skilled at makeup, of course beautiful, and they're pioneers and true professionals. I felt I couldn't do what they do. I was far from their level. So I thought, instead of trying to be like them, I should focus on skincare and the dedication of cosmetic researchers—the things I'm passionate about. But I wondered if there was even a demand for that kind of content. Then I watched videos by mentalist DaiGo. Although his videos are based on academic papers, which I worried might be too difficult for viewers, his content is entertaining and engaging. Although his subscriber numbers are on a completely different level from mine, and I'm not aiming for that, I learned that people will watch videos based on solid evidence and proper information. This made me think it's important to base my content on evidence. When I had this vague idea about what to do, I thought, 'Wait, YouTube is different from before. How should I approach it?' So I researched this thoroughly.
I looked at doctor YouTubers and found that doctors like Hashimoto-sensei and the legendary Dr. Takasu were prominent. Hashimoto-sensei explains internal medicine content clearly and entertainingly. Dr. Takasu is a renowned cosmetic surgeon who runs a very famous clinic and is excellent both as a doctor and as a YouTuber. He really stands out. I admired him and wanted to try making entertaining content like his, but I realized that would be difficult for me. So I went back to basics and decided to focus on what I love: beauty, health, and cosmetics.
However, I also seriously researched how to grow views, how to increase subscribers, and what timeframe and numbers would be good. I watched videos by business YouTubers like Manabu and Ikehaya University explaining how to start YouTube. They said something like, 'You can only talk about YouTube after making 100 videos.' This meant I shouldn't call myself a YouTuber or talk about starting YouTube until I had made 100 videos. I should just focus on making content. My goal was to make 100 videos, and if I had about 10,000 subscribers and 100,000 views by then, I'd consider continuing YouTube. Thanks to you all, I started in March and by September had reached 160,000 subscribers. I'm truly grateful. So the business YouTubers Ikehaya and Manabu said you become a YouTuber only after making 100 videos. Now that I've reached 100 videos, I finally feel like I'm becoming a YouTuber focused on beauty and health.
As for equipment for making YouTube videos—camera, microphone, and sound quality—since I'm just talking, I wanted good audio. I researched this using videos by Seito Koji and Ushi Iinuma Tokugawa, who explain cameras and microphones in detail. I bought the same camera and microphone they recommended and experimented until I got it right.
Now that I've reached 100 videos, I'm thinking about the direction of this channel. I really must emphasize: I love cosmetics. I love skincare and beauty. I believe skincare and cosmetics are about taking care of yourself and enjoying it. I want people to enjoy them correctly and take care of themselves properly. Of course, we need some cautionary messages about avoiding certain things, but I want to focus on positive messages: 'Let's do it this way' and 'Let's have fun with it.' After watching my videos, I want people to have correct knowledge, and as this accumulates, they'll become more beautiful, healthier, and happier. I want viewers to smile after watching, to feel positive, and to want to try new skincare or makeup. So I try to use positive rather than negative language and create videos that make people happy rather than just entertained.
There are so many cosmetics out there. Every one is wonderful because brilliant researchers developed them carefully. But if you understand what ingredients are in a product and what effects you can expect, it's easier to choose what's right for you. I don't believe any single cosmetic is absolute. The right skincare product depends on your skin type, age, and where you live. So I want people to have knowledge and make informed choices. Rather than saying 'use only this,' I want to provide information like, 'There's this wonderful toner,' or 'People with this skin type should consider this product.' This way, people can make choices that suit them. I did research in university once, but honestly, it was too tedious for me. So I work in clinical practice instead. Because researchers exist, doctors like me can practice. Because people develop new products, we can use skincare. Although researchers often don't appear publicly, I'd like to represent their efforts. If people enjoy cosmetics and feel happy using them because of my videos, I think that's wonderful.
I'm genuinely amazed that 160,000 people have subscribed to my channel. That's way more than the population of Miyakojima where I was born! Knowing so many people subscribe makes me both happy and determined to do my best. I want even more people from various age groups to subscribe.
Recently, people often tell me they watch my YouTube videos. Young people to people in their 50s, 60s, and even 70s tell me they watch. Thank you! When I ask if they've pressed the subscribe button, some say they watch but haven't subscribed yet. Please subscribe! New videos will be recommended to you, and you'll get notifications. Please subscribe with your whole family if you can.
Now that I've completed 100 videos, I suppose I can finally call myself a YouTuber. I think my genre is beauty or beauty and health. Within these 100 videos, I've experimented with different types of content—interesting stories, funny stories, patient consultations. Despite how I appear, I've had various life experiences with many stories left to share. For example, you might not think there's demand, but if you want to hear about romance, or more ghost stories like before, or about the behind-the-scenes beauty industry—anything really, even if it's not about beauty or health. If you want to hear about something, please comment!
I've given you a rough overview of who Arata Tomori is and why I do YouTube. To summarize: I love beauty. I love cosmetics and skincare. I want people to properly enjoy this skincare, cosmetics, and beauty that I love, choosing informed products, and I hope this makes everyone happy. So please subscribe to my channel if you can. See you in video number 101. Goodbye!
