Today I have an announcement for everyone. I've been sharing ingredient explanations and telling you how wonderful this or that cosmetic product is, but... please don't laugh, I've decided that as of today, I'm retiring. I met someone who knows even more about ingredients than I do and can talk about them just as well. (Breaking character for a moment) That intro was a bit rough, wasn't it. I am an actress, but this isn't acting. I can't keep up the lie, sorry everyone. Hello, this is Tomori. Today, some of you may recognize this icon—on Instagram there's a unique writing style I love, which I call the 'Usayoshi style,' and I've invited the beauty analyst behind it, Usayoshi-san, to join us today. 'Hello everyone, I'm the person behind Usayoshi.' Actually, Usayoshi-san had almost never shown her face—to the point where even her real-life friends probably wouldn't recognize her. She kept it that way for so long, but her writing style is genuinely fascinating—please check out the Usayoshi style. Her explanations are so well put together that sometimes the same words would come up in both our content, and I ended up paying homage to her work a few times. So I tried to 'pick her up,' sending her DMs and such. At first, I thought she was a man. 'Yeah, I get that a lot.' So I imagined some science-type researcher guy, but when we finally met in person, I told her, 'If you're this cute, you should really show your face.' At first she was like, that's not really what I do. 'If that were the plan, I wouldn't have made that account in the first place.' It took about a year of me saying 'Usayoshi-san, you're cute, show your face!' 'If I'm going to show my face, please let it be on your YouTube channel.' She had shown her face before in a magazine called Mochi, but I'm so glad I managed to convince Usayoshi-san to reveal herself on my YouTube channel. She's so knowledgeable about ingredients and techniques that I don't even feel like a rival—she's truly wonderful as a beauty analyst. Aren't you going to start your own YouTube channel yet? 'That's right, I don't have my own YouTube channel yet. I'd like to eventually, but I guess I'm still in the preparation stage.' 'Beauty analyst'—this is a title Dr. Tomori came up with, right? 'I know it's a bit much to say myself, but I think it's a pretty good title.' So today, as a dermatologist and a beauty analyst, we're going to pick our top 5 absolutely essential beauty ingredients. Let's get started. We haven't discussed this beforehand at all. We literally just said 'let's write it down on the count of three' a moment ago. 'Really, we decided what to do while we were walking here just now.' Since we're both people who know a lot about various ingredients, we wanted to talk about the ones we've been using for years without fail. Just to check, what's your skin type like? 'There's no strict academic definition, but I'd say I have what's called 'inner dry' skin. I tend to get roughness, but also oil at the same time, so enlarged pores, blackheads, and redness are things I worry about.' You don't seem like that at all though. 'Now that I'm in my late 30s, pores, redness, and dryness are what concern me about my skin.' Do you dislike heavy, sticky products? 'I'm not really a fan, but in my 20s I felt like I should moisturize a lot, so from there I studied and gradually fine-tuned my routine to find what works best for me now.' Before we announce the top 5, how did you get so knowledgeable about beauty in the first place? 'I'm completely self-taught. People often assume I must be a researcher or product developer, but it's all self-taught. Until my late 20s, I had acne all over my face—it was such a complex for me that I couldn't even go to department store cosmetics counters because I hated having my face seen. I was someone who avoided beauty entirely. So I felt like I was in a completely different world from this. But I thought, this can't go on. Also, I was really bad at being in front of people, so I wanted to change myself, and started buying tons of products from drugstores and online. Since I'd bought all this stuff, I wanted to not just take it in but also put it out there, so I started a blog.' So it started with a blog? 'Yes, I liked writing, so as I kept doing it, I thought I should study more to add depth to what I share, so I got a cosmetics ingredient certification. And I also kept watching Dr. Tomori's YouTube videos.' You're so honest and can't tell a lie when you talk—that makes me happy. 'The reason I started this account is that I wanted people to gain knowledge and be able to choose for themselves, rather than just buying what other people say is good. That was the concept behind starting it.' It's grown so well, I'm grateful. 'I really can't thank you enough, that's really the image I have.' Being able to write like that is amazing. Were you originally into things like novel writing? 'No, not at all. I was in the humanities, and cosmetics tend to be a science-heavy field, so I felt like it was outside my specialty. I never had a writing job either. I just liked organizing information, and I guess I also liked to imagine things—daydream a bit—and I think all of that combined to create the Usayoshi style.' So originally you were a regular office worker? 'Yes, doing work completely unrelated to cosmetics.' Couldn't write at all back then. 'That's right. I studied cosmetics in my free time and on days off.' That's interesting. Thank you. And then when you first talked with people in person, everyone was like 'wait, that was you?!' They were so surprised. Followers who happened to see you in person were like, 'whoa,' there was a lot of that reaction. 'Yes, there was a lot of that.' Amazing. Let's go from 5th place then. Alright, Usayoshi-san, what's your 5th place pick? 'I put Pitera in 5th place.' (Laughs) Oh, I forgot—that's an ingredient too, right. 'Yes, I just thought of it and added it. SK-II really loves Pitera to an almost excessive degree. I think its composition is genuinely different from other ingredients. They keep discovering new beauty benefits—'it does this, it does that'—but ultimately it always comes back to 'it's Pitera after all.' And with so many beauty ingredients constantly emerging these days, a lot of people are getting beauty fatigue. For those people, I think there's a comforting warmth in being able to think 'as long as I use Pitera, I don't need to waver.' There's a sense of caring for the consumer in that, which I really like.' Pitera research is genuinely fascinating—intercellular communication, mystery, giving firmness, they even started talking about genetics. As analysis technology advances, more and more gets revealed, and it always comes back to how wonderful Pitera is. 'Right, the fact that it always comes back to the same place gives this sense of security, like returning home. Also, I've met several people from R&D, and every single one of them has beautiful skin.' I know exactly what you mean. 'The male researchers' skin really says it all.' I know, so incredibly fine-textured. 'It's the same texture, right—' His skin was this beautiful. 'I know, that person, right?' That was the one. 'When I saw that skin, I thought, I love this. This skin, I love it. This is the kind of skin that makes my heart skip a beat.' I think my heart skipped a beat too. You can really feel Pitera's power. Shall I go now? My 5th place is... 'Oh, you're going there?' It's the first beauty ingredient I ever came to love. I had terrible acne, so I always used vitamin C no matter what. But as my skin type shifted from oily to inner-dry, with oil production decreasing, I sometimes got redness from oil, or found that things I used to use started stinging. During a time like that, I took a break from the vitamin C I'd always used, and sometimes felt like my skin was doing better. But if I kept skipping it for too long, my skin condition would start to decline. So there's a sense of reassurance—vitamin C has done so much for my pores, oil, and acne over the years—so it's my 5th place. 'But 5th place is a bit surprising.' Surprising? 'I thought it would've been 1st or 2nd before.' I guess it's just become more of a dear, comfortable presence now. Moving on to 4th place, mine is retinol. 'That one? Retinol...huh, I see.' Just like your vitamin C, this might have been my number one about two years ago, but I think it's tricky in terms of who should use it and what skin condition needs to be in for it to be effective. For example, when my skin was a mess in my 20s like I mentioned earlier, starting with retinol in that state didn't really give me much benefit—it was more irritating than anything. But for someone whose skin has settled down a bit and wants to step up their routine, it's an amazing ingredient. I think it's crucial—and also tricky—to introduce retinol at just the right timing, which is why I put it at 4th. Once my skin reached a decent state, I started using retinol in my 30s, and I was amazed at how much it changed things—I felt so thankful for this ingredient. Pure retinol is great too, but I personally prefer steadily incorporating retinol derivatives. I use derivative products daily, and around the eyes I sometimes use pure retinol for wrinkle improvement. But rather than always being on the offensive with retinol, I've shifted to using it more to build up reserves while protecting my skin, so it's a modest 4th place for me. 'I see, interesting.' Then my pick is dipotassium glycyrrhizate. 'That's so 'you,' Sensei.' It's an old, classic anti-inflammatory ingredient. Three years ago, I probably wouldn't have included this. People tend to think of it as being for sensitive or dry skin, but I really want people with inner-dry skin to use anti-inflammatory ingredients too. Since barrier function is compromised, if you don't address the inflammation, no amount of oil control will work well. So anti-inflammatories are a must, and dipotassium glycyrrhizate is the one that's always there for you in moments like that. If you leave that spark of inflammation unaddressed, it leads to aging, spots, dullness—everything stems from there, so if you want to suppress that, this is the ingredient. 'As you get into your late 40s, you start to feel a spark of excitement for the person who's always quietly been by your side.' It used to feel kind of plain, but lately it's been showing up everywhere—like 'yeah, of course.' That's the kind of feeling it is. Alright, now for the top 3. What's your 3rd place? 'Sorry, let me go first—Rice Power No.11. Sorry, I know you love this too, Sensei.' Like dipotassium glycyrrhizate, foundational skincare tends to be seen as a plain, unglamorous type of care, but it connects to spots, wrinkles, dryness, aging—everything. When it comes to that, people tend to think 'use this ingredient for spots, that one for wrinkles,' treating it like a buffet of skincare. But there's a dilemma where wrinkles are hard to improve unless you use an ingredient suited to your own skin. Rice Power, though, strengthens your skin itself, and there's really nothing else quite like that—most ingredients just add something or suppress something. 'Right, it's not just about adding or suppressing—' Normalizing the skin's fundamental turnover sounds obvious but is actually quite difficult. 'There are so many great things about it, and there's so much research behind it, the data is amazing, right?' It really is. 'When I saw that data, I felt like I'd been hit over the head with it—I thought, I have to use this, there's no way around it. Yushin's Rice Power has all this data, and above all, Rice Power is a complex ingredient that produces effects through various combinations—I don't think there's anything else quite like it.' So that's your 3rd place? Yes, I made it 3rd. Let me share my 3rd place—tranexamic acid. 'I've heard you mention tranexamic acid so many times, Sensei.' As you get into your 30s and 40s—and for me, after pregnancy and childbirth—melasma, that hazy discoloration, became my biggest concern. Tranexamic acid has solid scientific backing for effectiveness, so we recommend both oral and topical tranexamic acid to patients. It helped with my hazy discoloration too, and I still apply it to areas I'm concerned about. Like dipotassium glycyrrhizate, it has strong anti-inflammatory action. You might think, then why not just use glycyrrhizate—but the fact that it can whiten, reduce inflammation, and suppress melasma all at once makes me really love it. However, the technology to make it penetrate properly is quite difficult. For example, Transino, and also that other brand, and I love Chanel too—the TXC in their Le Blanc line is a tranexamic acid derivative. It can cause facial swelling, and I often recommend it to patients, especially those with melasma. 'A well-deserved 3rd place.' Moving on to 2nd place. 'This one relates to my own skin type—it's azelaic acid.' That's surprising. 'Really? Once I used azelaic acid, I just couldn't stop. Because my skin tends to get oily and red, and of course I love tranexamic acid like you mentioned, Sensei, but when I used a high concentration of azelaic acid, the redness faded so smoothly it felt like I'd applied a primer. That's when I really felt firsthand that oil was causing trouble on my skin. In Japan it's a relatively recent ingredient, but in Europe and the US it has a long history, and it's finally becoming mainstream in Japan too—companies like Rohto have been researching it for a long time. People tend to associate oil control with younger people, like teenagers, but I really want adults to try it too.' That might be true actually. Azelaic acid tends to be marketed toward younger people except by Rohto, but it's actually perfect for people in their 30s and 40s whose T-zone messes up their makeup, but who also have some dryness under the eyes—if you moisturize heavily there, you end up getting acne or clogged pores. 'It also suppresses melanin production, and it's great as an anti-aging ingredient too, so I absolutely use azelaic acid every day, especially during this season.' True. So my 2nd place is Rice Power. Most people probably first learned about Rice Power through No.11, but for me it's actually No.6. No.6 suppresses oil production. Because I originally had that issue pointed out, and conversely No.11 was marketed more toward dry skin, so when I was young I didn't understand the appeal of No.11. Once I started using No.6 for oil suppression, I became really interested in Rice Power, and as I researched more, I realized No.11 isn't just for dry skin—it's something that raises water content, so I came to like it too. Then I came to like No.7 for balancing oil production. When I talked with Yushin's president for work, there's also No.101 I think, the drinkable one, for barrier care. Even though I might not look it, I'm actually a bit sensitive, and when my stomach feels uneasy, drinking it helps settle things down. I guess it also relates to mucous membranes, so when my throat feels sore or something, having it helps too. It supports me in so many different ways, so I feel it's an indispensable, wonderful thing—that's why I made Rice Power my 2nd place. Finally we have something in common. Both were pretty high-ranking for both of us. 'That's right.' Now, my 1st place is vitamin C. Sensei mentioned it used to be your number one until recently, and I actually thought that might describe me right now too, but vitamin C really is an all-around ingredient. Since it can support collagen production, there's really no one who wouldn't benefit from incorporating it—I feel like it's an ingredient that properly addresses your weak points. I love applying it topically, but I also love taking it as a supplement, and I make sure to incorporate vitamin C in some form. As you get into your 30s, oil production increases due to hormonal balance and stress, and vitamin C helps curb that, while also supporting collagen care at the same time—there are so many things I want to address. So when I think about what ingredient can cover all of that, vitamin C comes to mind. It addresses both oily pores and melasma care, so I made it my number one. And my number one is retinol. During pregnancy, my skin got a bit sensitive and I took a break from it for a while, and I noticed my skin lost its firmness. Since I'm also someone who does things steadily over time, when I started using retinol again, I noticed a real difference in firmness and glow compared to when I wasn't using it. Also, when I lost some weight and my neck got thinner, it started to look a bit wrinkly, so I started applying retinol to my neck too recently, and it's made a difference. So coming full circle, I landed back on retinol. 'So originally you used it for acne, and now it's more about firmness and glow, which makes you look more youthful.' In the end, since I'm 48 now and want to focus on anti-aging care, I sort of forced this pick, but it really is an ingredient I love, so I wanted to share it since I thought you'd understand. We turned it into a ranking, but really it's just that what you use differs depending on the season or your skin condition—these are all still solid, reliable ingredients, so I hope everyone will check them out too. This was fun. 'I was so nervous, but I ended up having such a fun conversation.' Let's do this again sometime—I said this was the last time showing your face, but since you already did it once, there's no stopping now. 'I'll do it proudly from now on—let's definitely do this again sometime, please.' Also, Usayoshi-san isn't doing YouTube right now, but she is active on Instagram, and it's genuinely so interesting, so please follow her there too. So, thank you so much for today, everyone.
