Hello everyone, I'm Dr. Tomori Nitta, a physician specializing in internal medicine and dermatology. Today I'd like to talk about five things you should never do when you have acne in summer. Summer is already a season when excess sebum production makes acne more likely to occur. With the added factor of mask-wearing, and having previously made a video specifically about mask acne, I'd like to revisit the topic more broadly — covering not just skincare but also lifestyle habits that can worsen acne, especially in summer. If you struggle with acne, please watch until the end. Before getting into the five things, let me briefly explain what acne actually is. Many people think acne is simply caused by an overgrowth of acne-causing bacteria, but it actually starts with clogged pores. When pores become clogged, C. acnes (the acne-causing bacteria) — which thrives on sebum — accumulates and multiplies there, eventually causing inflammation. So the starting point is not bacterial growth, but clogged pores. The key takeaway is that preventing clogged pores is the first step in preventing acne. 【#1: Using Scrubs】 You might think scrubbing can help squeeze out acne or clear clogged pores, but using a scrub on areas with active acne is a definite no. Scrubbing areas without acne — such as the T-zone or chin — to address rough texture or dullness is perfectly fine. However, scrubbing an area that already has active acne is essentially like sanding a wound — it adds further friction and irritation to already-inflamed skin, making the inflammation worse. Scrubbing for acne prevention or dullness is acceptable, but never scrub areas where you currently have active breakouts. 【#2: Staying Up Late】 Summer tends to invite late nights — watching streaming services or videos — but staying up late is also one of the factors that promotes clogged pores. It's well established that skin repairs itself during sleep. Ongoing sleep deprivation weakens the skin's barrier function, making it more prone to inflammation. It also disrupts the autonomic nervous system, which consists of the parasympathetic nervous system (responsible for relaxation) and the sympathetic nervous system (responsible for the fight-or-flight response). When you stay up too late, this balance is disrupted and the sympathetic nervous system can remain dominant. When the sympathetic nervous system is continuously activated, it stimulates the sebaceous glands and promotes the dominance of male hormones (androgens), which increase sebum production. If you want to prevent or avoid worsening acne, make sure you get adequate sleep. Note: The so-called "skin golden hours" were once said to be between 10 PM and 2 AM, but what matters most is getting deep, quality sleep during a consistent window — not necessarily that exact timeframe. Going to bed and waking up at consistent times is the key to maintaining a healthy autonomic nervous system. 【#3: Not Moisturizing Enough】 Because sebum production increases in summer, many people switch to lighter products and reduce moisturizing. While it's true that adding extra oil to already oily skin isn't necessary, neglecting water-based hydration is a mistake. When the skin lacks moisture, its barrier function weakens and it compensates by producing even more sebum — a condition known as "inner dryness" (combination skin). This leads to a vicious cycle: excess sebum → clogged pores → more acne. For summer moisturizing, opt for lightweight, water-based gel moisturizers or products containing moisture-retaining ingredients like ceramides and hyaluronic acid derivatives. Products containing sebum-regulating ingredients like Rice Power No. 6 or Vitamin C combined with hydration are also excellent choices. Always moisturize in a way that suits the season. 【#4: Overeating】 Overeating and excessive drinking can also worsen acne. While the type of food you eat matters (please refer to my separate video on acne-triggering foods), the key point here is simply not eating until you are completely full. The concept of eating until 80% full is well known for general health, and it applies to acne prevention too. Research has shown that when the brain senses that you are completely full, it sends signals that stimulate sebum production. This may partly explain why people who tend to overeat sometimes have noticeably oily skin. When combined with sebum-promoting foods like fried foods or sweets, eating to excess dramatically accelerates sebum production and pore-clogging. For both your overall health and your skin, aim to stop eating at 80% full. 【#5: Using Acne Patches】 Acne patches work by sealing the area off from outside air, but this is actually counterproductive for acne in many cases. C. acnes is classified as an anaerobic bacterium — meaning it thrives in low-oxygen environments. Under normal conditions on the skin's surface, it doesn't proliferate aggressively. However, when pores become clogged with sebum and the bacteria are cut off from air, they multiply rapidly. Placing an acne patch over a blemish further reduces air exposure, potentially creating an even more favorable environment for bacterial growth. This is also related to why wearing masks tends to worsen acne — not only due to friction and moisture-induced weakening of the skin barrier, but also because of reduced air circulation. The same applies to leaving sheet masks on overnight. If an acne patch is designed to allow air circulation, it may be acceptable, but as a general rule, keeping something tightly sealed over the skin for long periods is not a good idea. That covers today's five things you should never do when dealing with summer acne. I hope you discovered something new, or had your existing knowledge confirmed. I hope this was helpful to everyone. Thank you so much for watching to the end. See you in the next video. Goodbye!
