Hello everyone. I'm Arata Tomori, an internal medicine and dermatologist doctor. Today I'd like to talk about a scary condition that can be caused by incorrect eye makeup application. This scary condition is actually an eye disease called meibomian gland dysfunction. I don't think many of you have heard of meibomian gland dysfunction, so I'll explain it in detail, so please watch until the end. Many of you probably think that dry eye is caused by a decrease in tear secretion, which leads to dryness, right? Of course, that can indeed cause dry eye. But what's actually more closely related is this thing called meibomian gland dysfunction. What is meibomian gland dysfunction? There are oil glands called meibomian glands. As the name suggests, when there's dysfunction, the function becomes somewhat abnormal. Let me explain what meibomian glands actually are. Meibomian glands are oil-secreting glands lined up a bit behind the eyelashes. The upper eyelid has about 50 of them, and the lower eyelid has about 25, it's said. When oil is secreted from these meibomian glands, this oil sits on top of the tears (the water/moisture). This has the function of suppressing the evaporation of tears, or moisture. Also, since the oil is on top, when you open and close your eyelids, it has the effect of making the movement smooth. So when the oil coming out of the meibomian glands decreases, the moisture, the tears, evaporate more easily. Of course, there's also the issue of decreased tear secretion, but the tears themselves become more prone to evaporation, which leads to dry eye. The function of these meibomian glands tends to decline as we age, but recently it's becoming more common even in young people. The cause of this is incorrect eye makeup. Everyone wants to do their eye makeup properly, right? You want your eyes to look bigger. Especially this year, since we're wearing masks, only our eyes are visible. So people tend to do their eye makeup more thoroughly than usual, and many people want to make their eyes look bigger, so for example, when you draw eyeliner firmly on the mucous membrane behind the eyelashes, or when you apply mascara and pull it up forcefully from there, without realizing it, you end up blocking the openings of these meibomian glands. When these get blocked, as I mentioned earlier, the oil can't come out, so tears evaporate more easily, leading to dry eye. So, try to avoid applying eye makeup on the mucous membrane area as much as possible. But I know many of you still want to do it anyway. In that case, please make sure to remove it thoroughly with a dedicated eye makeup remover. Leftover residue can block the meibomian glands, so make sure to remove it properly. Especially if you're using glitter or waterproof products, please be sure to remove them thoroughly with an eye makeup remover. In addition, if possible, there are products called eye shampoos sold at ophthalmology clinics these days, which are cleansers for washing around the eyelashes and nearby areas. Keeping the area around the meibomian glands clean helps ensure proper secretion. And there's one more thing - since meibomian glands secrete oil, and oil solidifies when it gets cold, warming the area around your eyes can actually improve meibomian gland secretion. So on days when you've done thorough eye makeup, wash it off properly, and additionally, you know how there are things like hot steam eye masks these days? Try using something like that to warm your eyes, or use a hot towel to warm the area around your eyes. Wash thoroughly, and warm thoroughly - if you follow these two things, meibomian gland dysfunction can improve, and you can prevent dry eye. How was that? On this channel, I explain things about beauty and health in an easy-to-understand way like this, so if you enjoyed it, please subscribe to the channel. Well then, see you in the next video. Goodbye.
