Hello everyone! I'm Arata Tomori, an internal medicine and dermatologist. Today, I'd like to introduce five foods that cause chronic inflammation in the body and that you should try to avoid. In a previous video, I explained that aging is largely driven by chronic inflammation in the body, so it's important to prevent it. If you haven't seen that video, please check it out first. Suppressing chronic inflammation can relieve physical discomfort and also improve your skin. So what can you do? There are two approaches: preventing inflammation from starting, and actively suppressing it. The key to preventing inflammation is to avoid foods that trigger it as much as possible. Exercise and stress reduction also matter, but diet is truly the cornerstone of a healthy lifestyle. Continuously eating pro-inflammatory foods can quietly worsen chronic inflammation, leading to persistent fatigue, dull or dry skin despite diligent skincare, and a general sense that something is off. Let's go through each food one by one, so please watch until the end. The first is omega-6 oils. Oils generally fall into two categories: solid fats (such as animal fats and some plant-based fats like coconut oil) and liquid oils that remain fluid even when cold. Among liquid plant-based oils, the omega-6 type—known as linoleic acid—promotes inflammation in the body. To identify them, look at the oils in your kitchen. Salad oil and sesame oil are typical examples of omega-6 oils. It's easier to remember what is NOT omega-6: omega-3 oils include perilla oil and flaxseed oil, while omega-9 oils include olive oil. Omega-6 oils are dominant in everyday cooking because they are cheap to produce in large quantities and are stable under heat, making them common in processed foods such as cakes, snacks, chips, and instant soups. If a label lists "vegetable oil" (植物油脂), it is generally an omega-6 oil. Omega-6 oils promote the arachidonic acid cascade, a pathway that drives inflammation. Ideally, omega-3 oils would act as a counterbalance, but modern diets tend to be high in omega-6 and low in omega-3 (found in fatty fish as EPA and DHA), tipping the body toward a pro-inflammatory state. Consider switching to oils higher in omega-3 and omega-9—such as camelina oil, which is also heat-stable—and check product labels for vegetable oil content when buying processed foods. The second is ultra-processed foods. Let me share an interesting study conducted at a clinical center in Maryland. Participants spent two weeks eating ultra-processed foods (bacon, canned goods, potato chips, cream cheese, etc.) and another two weeks eating minimally processed foods (meat, eggs, vegetables, oats, and other whole grains). Calorie intake was matched between the two periods. Despite the same calories, participants gained weight during the ultra-processed food phase. Their satiety hormones decreased, while ghrelin—the hunger-stimulating hormone—increased. These differences appeared in the same individuals within just two weeks. Ultra-processed foods not only lead to overeating but also directly trigger inflammation in the body. A useful rule of thumb: if your grandparents wouldn't recognize it as food, it's probably ultra-processed. Cream cheese, bacon, and canned beer, for example, are all relatively modern inventions. Minimally processed foods are those you can eat close to their natural form—meat, eggs, vegetables. Since ultra-processed foods promote obesity and chronic inflammation, try to avoid them as much as possible. The third is alcohol. You may have heard the saying "alcohol is the best of all medicines," and moderate drinking was once thought to be beneficial based on the so-called J-curve theory, which suggested that light drinkers had lower mortality rates than non-drinkers. However, when the research was revisited, it turned out that non-drinkers actually have lower inflammation levels and lower mortality rates than even moderate drinkers. Excessive alcohol consumption stimulates the release of pro-inflammatory hormones. Giving it up entirely may be difficult, but be mindful of how much you drink. The fourth is high-fructose corn syrup (HFCS), known in Japan as ブドウ糖果糖液糖 (glucose-fructose liquid sugar). Check the labels of commercial juices and sweets and you'll likely find it listed. It was developed as an inexpensive substitute for sugar, and because it is in liquid form, it causes blood sugar levels to spike rapidly after consumption. When blood sugar surges, insulin may struggle to keep up, and persistently high blood sugar contributes to chronic inflammation. You might wonder whether the fructose in fruit is the same problem—but fruit also contains fiber and other nutrients that slow sugar absorption, so you would need to eat a large amount of fruit to produce the same blood sugar spike as HFCS. HFCS is essentially concentrated fruit sweetness without the fiber buffer. An occasional intake is fine, but when buying food and drinks—especially for children—check labels and choose products without HFCS whenever possible. The fifth is processed meat, such as ham, sausage, and bacon. Substances generated when meat is cooked at high temperatures, as well as nitrites added to preserve freshness and color, can cause low-grade inflammation when consumed in large amounts, contributing to chronic inflammation. You don't need to eliminate processed meats entirely, but if you eat them at almost every meal, you may be in a chronically pro-inflammatory state, so be mindful of your intake. To summarize, the five foods to watch out for are: ① omega-6 oils, ② ultra-processed foods, ③ alcohol, ④ high-fructose corn syrup, and ⑤ processed meats such as ham and sausage. All of these are abundant in modern life, so cutting them out completely is unrealistic. However, simply being a little more conscious when choosing what to eat can help suppress chronic inflammation, improve your overall health, and—as your body feels better—enhance your skin and appearance as well.
