Hello everyone, I'm Arata Tomori. Today I want to talk to you again about how amazing hyaluronic acid really is, so I've made this video. When it comes to hyaluronic acid, you all know it's a common ingredient found in cosmetics at all price points, so you probably think it's just a moisturizing ingredient. However, hyaluronic acid actually does more than just moisturize—it creates skin transparency and prevents aging. We've also discovered how to maintain hyaluronic acid, so today I'd like to introduce the latest research and products on the importance and technologies for maintaining hyaluronic acid. If you want transparency, firmness, and want to address aging, this is a must-watch.
First, let's start with what hyaluronic acid actually is. Hyaluronic acid is produced in our bodies. It's a high molecular weight polymer made of two sugars—glucuronic acid and N-acetylglucosamine—linked together in long chains. You don't need to memorize this, but it has some viscosity and a fairly large molecular weight. When it enters the skin and holds water, it creates the moisturizing effect that you all imagine. Hyaluronic acid is found in many parts of our bodies—bones, eyes, joints—but it's said that more than half of the body's hyaluronic acid is in the skin. So maintaining hyaluronic acid is really about maintaining youthful skin.
Now, hyaluronic acid has something called a half-life, where it's broken down soon after being created. For example, collagen has a long half-life measured in years, but new hyaluronic acid is broken down by the next day and replaced with new molecules—that's how quickly it happens. However, the half-life gradually increases, so molecules created over 1-5 days get broken down, meaning our bodies are constantly creating and breaking down hyaluronic acid. So as long as synthesis and degradation are balanced, we're fine.
Young people have balanced synthesis and degradation abilities, but as we get older, synthesis decreases and degradation increases, reducing hyaluronic acid levels. Surprisingly, hyaluronic acid imbalance starts around age 30, and by age 60, hyaluronic acid levels drop to about half of what they were at 30. This is really scary. Of course this affects skin moisture levels, but the skin shrinking we'll discuss is caused by more than just water loss.
Recently, we've discovered that hyaluronic acid has abilities beyond just holding water. Hyaluronic acid in the skin exists in the stratum corneum, epidermis, and dermis. Most of the hyaluronic acid we talked about being in the skin is actually in the dermis. We often talk about increasing dermal hyaluronic acid for firmness, but today I want to focus mainly on epidermal hyaluronic acid.
Until now, epidermal hyaluronic acid hasn't received much focus, but research shows that maintaining epidermal hyaluronic acid might actually suppress dermal hyaluronic acid degradation, so I want to focus on epidermal hyaluronic acid today.
Epidermal hyaluronic acid exists between epidermal cells. Since it holds tremendous amounts of water, we apply hyaluronic acid to the skin for its moisturizing effects. But it also delivers nutrients to epidermal cells and removes waste. The epidermis has no blood vessels—the dermis does—so hyaluronic acid between epidermal cells acts like a water channel. When epidermal hyaluronic acid decreases, not only does moisture drop, but cell-to-cell communication and cellular energy also decline.
When epidermal cell energy drops, UV exposure triggers melanocytes to produce melanin and transfer it to epidermal cells. If turnover were normal, cells containing melanin would shed, but reduced turnover creates a dull, cloudy appearance and uneven skin tone. Rather than localized spots, this overall dullness and unevenness is likely related to reduced epidermal hyaluronic acid.
You might think we should just apply hyaluronic acid to the skin, but as mentioned, hyaluronic acid has an enormous molecular weight, so it doesn't penetrate easily. It mainly creates a film on the surface without actually penetrating. So far, increasing epidermal hyaluronic acid has focused on reducing molecular size for penetration. For example, Hadalabo developed low-molecular hyaluronic acid to penetrate skin, though low-molecular hyaluronic acid has reduced water-holding capacity. Hadalabo considers not just molecular size but also inflammation-reducing hyaluronic acid.
Shiseido's Beauty Performance Skin Filler was trending a while back and I've introduced it on YouTube before. It has a 1st and 2nd formulation—you apply the 1st at night and the 2nd in the morning. It's incredibly innovative. Shiseido created compact hyaluronic acid that penetrates deep into the epidermis using their proprietary technology. Since small-molecule hyaluronic acid has less water-holding ability, you apply the 2nd formulation in the morning, which converts the penetrated hyaluronic acid into larger molecules. So it enters small but enlarges once it reaches skin depths—a unique Shiseido technology.
Initially, penetration was the trend, but since hyaluronic acid is created and broken down daily, boosting synthesis ability creates transparency and plumpness. Research is shifting toward how to promote hyaluronic acid synthesis. That's why retinol, which you all love, increases epidermal hyaluronic acid, so when you use retinol for wrinkle improvement, you also get a glow.
While companies like Rohto and Shiseido excel at reducing molecular size, it's actually Kanebo leading research on promoting synthesis. Kanebo is like the god of hyaluronic acid research. Researcher Yoshida has studied hyaluronic acid for years, continuously researching epidermal hyaluronic acid synthesis and inhibition mechanisms. As a side note, they also research the dermis—dermal synthesis and inhibition are understood. Kanebo created Aquacerin to promote dermal hyaluronic acid synthesis and discovered Karamogieikisu to suppress degradation.
Epidermal synthesis promotion is understood, but inhibition is still being researched. Since promoting epidermal synthesis increases epidermal hyaluronic acid, Kanebo researchers found something called natural Nagu. Kanebo's Ryu contains it, and an upgraded version released last year is this: Twany's Skin Oralogenic contains Nagu 2.0 and efficiently increases epidermal hyaluronic acid.
It gives a glow and firmness impression, and since epidermal hyaluronic acid is so important for this season's whitening, focusing on epidermal hyaluronic acid just before using whitening products might be good. Another 2022 news item—a paper on how epidermal hyaluronic acid might be falling into the dermis showed that caring for the basal membrane between epidermis and dermis could increase epidermal hyaluronic acid.
Regarding basal membrane research, Dior has researched regenerating skin cells with Capture, so the Capture Total Hyaluronic released in January contains low-molecular hyaluronic acid, but the key point is it includes ingredients that seal basal membrane holes so epidermal hyaluronic acid doesn't fall into the dermis, increasing epidermal hyaluronic acid through a suppression approach with new technology. It has a hyaluronic acid injection-like design. I think using products that increase epidermal hyaluronic acid before UV intensity increases is great for preparing your epidermis.
Another point: if epidermal cells don't undergo proper turnover, skin won't create hyaluronic acid. Skin increases hyaluronic acid and intercellular lipids through turnover, so addressing the basal membrane to promote turnover is crucial. This is where Rice Power No. 11 and 11 Plus matter.
For example, Miho used Rice Force's Wrinkle Ball Serum extensively, which contains Rice Power No. 11 Plus. While it addresses wrinkles, it acts on the basal membrane, promoting epidermal turnover and increasing epidermal hyaluronic acid. Rice Power No. 11 also works on the dermis, increasing dermal hyaluronic acid for wrinkle improvement and epidermal hyaluronic acid for transparency. Though this is an eye product, full-face versions should also contribute to skin transparency.
To summarize: hyaluronic acid isn't just moisturizing anymore. Increasing epidermal hyaluronic acid increases transparency. Since it transports nutrients to the epidermis, applying hyaluronic acid before UV exposure and melanin care is crucial. Whether you want whitening products, don't think you're dry so don't care about hyaluronic acid, or think drugstore hyaluronic acid is enough—hyaluronic acid research has advanced in delivery methods, synthesis promotion, suppressing loss, and promoting turnover, with many products addressing transparency and firmness. While hyaluronic acid seems common, I'd be happy if you understood that research is advancing.
How was that? Today might be detailed, but properly preparing your foundation makes future whitening care more effective. I recommend starting epidermal hyaluronic acid care before UV becomes intense. Thank you for watching until the end. If you liked today's video, please give it a thumbs up and leave comments. See you in the next video. Goodbye. Thank you for watching with subtitles.
