Demand for hand creams is growing. As a dermatologist, I am often asked what kind of hand cream I use and how I choose one. With the spread of COVID-19, frequent hand washing and alcohol-based hand sanitizing have caused many people to suffer from dry, irritated hands. In this video, I will analyze and recommend hand creams based on their ingredients for everyday use. First, let me explain why skin and hands become rough. The skin has a barrier function, which consists of moisture held between skin cells (the stratum corneum) and a layer of sebum (skin oil) on top. When either of these is lost, the skin's barrier function deteriorates, leading to dryness, external irritation, and internal moisture evaporation. The barrier function is maintained by two key elements: "moisturizers," which retain water in the skin, and "emollients," which form a protective sebum-like film. When choosing a hand cream, since hand washing and alcohol sanitizing strip away both moisture and sebum, I looked for products that form an effective protective film, have a pleasant texture, and lock in moisture. Specifically, I focused on products that contain ceramide. Moisturizers generally fall into three categories: ① those that capture and absorb incoming moisture, ② those that hold onto moisture and retain it even when moisture levels drop, and ③ those that further prevent evaporation. Ceramide is considered especially effective at boosting moisture in the stratum corneum. Amino acids also play a role by attracting water to the skin. Together, amino acids draw in moisture while ceramide locks it in, strengthening the skin's barrier function. Vaseline (petrolatum) is included as an emollient to form a protective film. [Product 1: Ceramide-Infused Cream] Because it contains vaseline as a base, the cream stays on well. It spreads easily and is not overly greasy, though applying too much can cause some stickiness. Thanks to its ceramide content, it is particularly recommended for those with dryness caused by frequent hand washing. Since the product is labeled for both face and body use, it can also be applied in small amounts (about the size of a grain of rice) to dry areas around the mouth or eyes, making it a versatile two-in-one product. [Product 2: Urun Wrap Heparin Cream] This cream contains heparin-like substances, which are also found in the medical product Hirudoid. They promote blood circulation and increase moisture levels in the skin. It is well-suited for people who experience cold hands, poor circulation, cracked skin, or chapped fingers. It contains squalane and vaseline as emollients. The texture is light and refreshing with minimal stickiness, making it ideal for daily use. Applying it all the way to the nails can also help prevent hangnails. [Product 3: Q10 Gold Cream] This is a cost-effective option widely available at drugstores and supermarkets. It contains hyaluronic acid and collagen (moisture-retaining types) as well as glycerin (a moisture-attracting type) as moisturizers. Glycerin draws moisture in, while hyaluronic acid and collagen lock it in for sustained hydration. As emollients, it contains three types of cuticle oils — jojoba oil, almond oil, and squalane — providing strong water-repelling properties. It is particularly recommended for those who frequently do work involving water. Despite its high oil content, the texture feels surprisingly light and non-greasy. [How to Apply Hand Cream Correctly] ① Take about two pea-sized amounts of cream onto the back of your hand. ② Instead of spreading it immediately over your entire hand, start by applying it to your fingertips. ③ Carefully spread the cream to each individual finger, all the way to the tips. ④ Extend the application to your wrists, ensuring thorough coverage of the entire hand, not just the back. Since hand washing and alcohol sanitizing will continue to be part of our daily lives, make it a habit to apply hand cream after washing your hands, and take good care of your skin's moisture and hydration.
