Hello everyone! I'm Dr. Nitta from Tomisato, specializing in internal medicine and dermatology. Today, I'd like to share the secret behind the one thing female doctors would absolutely never do for beautiful skin. Have you noticed that doctors who work in cosmetic dermatology tend to have beautiful skin? You might wonder what they're doing to maintain it. To be honest, since they work in cosmetic dermatology, many of them use treatments like lasers and light therapy. I personally use these treatments at my own clinic as well. However, among all these beauty-conscious female doctors, there is one thing that every single one of them has in common — something they would absolutely never do. I'm confident no doctor would ever do this. What do you think it is? Simply put, it's getting a tan — sun exposure. In fact, 80% of skin aging is caused by UV-induced sun damage, known as "photoaging." No matter how good your skincare products are, or how many laser treatments you receive, exposing your skin to UV rays will inevitably lead to three things: dark spots, wrinkles, and sagging. UVB rays, which burn the surface of the skin, are easier to notice — you feel the heat and realize you're getting burned. They tend to show up as visible dark spots, making them relatively easy to detect and avoid. However, the truly frightening cause of aging is UVA rays. UVA penetrates deep into the skin and progressively destroys collagen and elastin — the proteins responsible for skin elasticity and firmness. This leads to deep wrinkles such as frown lines and marionette lines. Have you ever felt like your face looks bigger as you age, even though your weight hasn't changed? This isn't because you've gained weight. It's because UVA rays break down collagen and elastin, causing the skin to sag. This makes the facial contours less defined, giving the impression that the face has grown larger. All of this is caused by UV exposure. Therefore, to maintain beautiful skin, the most important thing is to never let yourself get a tan. In your daily life, this means applying sunscreen properly. Most people don't apply nearly enough. The recommended amount is 2 milligrams per square centimeter — roughly two pea-sized amounts for the face. Make sure to apply it thoroughly, paying special attention to the C-zone, the jawline, the area around the eyes, and down to the neckline. This will help prevent sagging and the appearance of a larger face. Of course, using quality skincare products is important, and visiting a cosmetic dermatologist is highly beneficial. But above all else, protecting your skin from sun exposure is the foundation of beautiful skin. On this channel, I share accurate, medically informed knowledge about skincare and health.
