Hello everyone, I'm Chia, a physician specializing in internal medicine and dermatology. Today I'd like to talk about oatmeal, a topic that has been coming up frequently on YouTube and social media lately.
You've probably seen posts about starting an oatmeal diet, how delicious oatmeal is, or how it's good for your skin. There are also many claims that oatmeal is highly nutritious, great for your health, and can help you lose weight. Plenty of tempting recipes have been shared online as well.
However, from a physician's perspective, I've noticed a lot of misconceptions in these posts. So today, I'd like to address some common misunderstandings about the effects of oatmeal. Please watch until the end.
First, let me give you the bottom line: oatmeal alone will not make you lose weight. In other words, an "oatmeal diet" is not particularly meaningful.
Why won't it make you lose weight? Simply put, oatmeal is a type of grain — specifically oats, which belong to the same family as wheat. Because it's a grain, it's essentially a carbohydrate, just like wheat. Carbohydrates are converted into sugar in your body, so eating too much of them can lead to weight gain.
Oatmeal does contain plenty of dietary fiber in addition to carbohydrates, which means it causes a slower rise in blood sugar levels. However, it is still a source of carbohydrates, so overeating it will lead to excess sugar intake. Eating oatmeal does not cause your body to burn fat. The idea that oatmeal burns fat because it is nutritious is simply not accurate.
So why do people say oatmeal helps you lose weight? Most likely, it works for people whose diets are quite poor to begin with — for example, those eating large amounts of rice or always ordering extra-large portions when eating out. For these individuals, replacing a meal with oatmeal could lead to weight loss. However, if you already eat a balanced diet and are at a healthy weight, losing weight simply by eating oatmeal is unlikely. Eating oatmeal does not automatically equal losing weight — please don't be misled on this point.
That said, does this mean there's no point in eating oatmeal? Not at all — it has quite a few benefits beyond weight loss. In fact, I eat it myself. While it won't help you lose weight, oatmeal offers several advantages, especially for women.
The first benefit is healthier, more beautiful skin. I eat oatmeal specifically for this reason. There are two key reasons why oatmeal can improve your skin: its abundant dietary fiber and its rich mineral content.
Let's start with dietary fiber. There are two types: soluble and insoluble — those that dissolve in water and those that don't. The most important type is soluble dietary fiber, which is found in seaweed and sticky foods like natto. Soluble fiber acts as food for the gut microbiome, helping to improve your intestinal environment.
When your gut environment deteriorates, waste accumulates and you become constipated. This leads to the production of harmful gases, which are absorbed through the intestinal wall and can cause skin problems. While the exact mechanism is still being studied, data also shows that a healthier gut environment leads to increased skin moisture levels. Think of it this way: a healthy gut equals healthy, beautiful skin.
Oatmeal's soluble fiber is particularly rich in beta-glucan, a compound that promotes the growth of beneficial gut bacteria such as Bifidobacterium and Lactobacillus. For anyone struggling with constipation or skin problems, oatmeal is an ingredient I strongly recommend.
The second key benefit is minerals. Oatmeal contains significantly more magnesium and iron than brown rice or wheat — two minerals that are especially important for women.
Magnesium deficiency is known to cause skin problems. It was once even applied topically in medications and cosmetics to treat rough skin through transdermal absorption. Japan's Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare recommends a daily magnesium intake of 350 to 500 mg, yet statistically, the average Japanese person only consumes about 250 mg per day. This means most people are chronically deficient by around 100 mg, which can be an ongoing contributor to skin issues. Oatmeal is one of the most efficient ways to boost your magnesium intake.
Iron is the other key mineral. As most women know, iron is essential for producing blood, and women are especially prone to iron deficiency due to monthly menstruation. While spinach is often thought of as the go-to source of iron, oatmeal is also surprisingly rich in iron and easy to incorporate into your diet. Improving your iron levels and correcting anemia enhances blood circulation, which in turn boosts skin cell turnover. Women in particular should make sure to get enough iron to prevent skin problems.
As you can see, oatmeal has many benefits. However, if you eat it for the wrong reasons, you might end up gaining weight despite intending to diet.
It's also worth noting that many oatmeal recipes include nuts, blueberries (which contain anthocyanins), goji berries, and other antioxidant-rich ingredients. While these are great for your skin, they can be high in calories and sugar, making them less suitable for weight loss.
I would not recommend eating oatmeal if your goal is to lose weight. However, if you want to improve your skin or relieve constipation, oatmeal is an excellent food to incorporate into your daily diet.
