Hello everyone, this is Arata Tomori. Today I'd like to introduce the latest peeling cosmetic product that lets you experience water peeling at home, so please watch until the end. Home peeling has become quite mainstream. Of course, products that reach deeper layers or use high-concentration peeling agents are safer and more effective when done at a clinic. But for those who find it difficult to visit a clinic every month, gently promoting the turnover of the surface stratum corneum, or removing just one clean layer, can bring transparency to the skin. By the way, skin turnover slows down as we age. The skin has a basal layer at the very bottom of the epidermis, from which skin cells are born, grow, and eventually become the stratum corneum. The skin's life cycle ends when the stratum corneum flakes off, but the time it takes to reach this stage slows down with age. Furthermore, the stratum corneum cells stick together, and once they become thick enough, the adhesive components holding them together are supposed to release, causing them to flake off naturally. However, in adults, these adhesive components become harder to release, causing the stratum corneum to accumulate more easily. This is one reason why adults tend to experience dullness and a lack of transparency in their skin. Even young people can experience disrupted turnover. Particularly when there's excess sebum production and pore inflammation, the inflammation causes the stratum corneum to thicken, which then blocks the pores, preventing sebum from escaping and leading to acne. In other words, even in young people, localized thickening of the stratum corneum can cause pore issues and acne, while in adults, the stratum corneum across the entire face tends to thicken. Please keep this in mind. This is why regular exfoliation care is so important. Many home peeling products have been available until now, and most of them use either AHA (fruit-derived acids like glycolic acid or lactic acid) or BHA (beta hydroxy acid, commonly known as salicylic acid). AHA compounds like glycolic acid and lactic acid are water-soluble, while BHA (salicylic acid) is oil-soluble, allowing it to penetrate deep into pores. This makes it effective for people with acne, where the stratum corneum has accumulated inside the pores. The conventional wisdom was: use mild AHA for surface-level exfoliation, and use stronger BHA if you're concerned about acne. However, recently, even in clinical treatments, peeling agents are emerging that can reach beyond the skin's surface into the dermis—agents that address dryness or boost collagen and elastin production. This is happening in the medical field, but new developments are also appearing in the cosmetics world. That's where PHA (also known as gluconolactone) comes in. It's like a cousin of AHA, but differs in several important ways. First, conventional AHA and BHA (glycolic acid and salicylic acid) have a low pH, typically around 3. Since skin is slightly acidic with a pH of about 5 to 6, a pH of 3 leans more toward the acidic side, which can cause stinging when applied to skin—making it difficult for people with dry skin to use. PHA, on the other hand, has an original pH of about 5, making it closer to the skin's natural pH and therefore much less irritating. Another crucial difference is that PHA has a larger molecular size, so it doesn't penetrate deep into the skin—it stays on the surface of the stratum corneum. While this might seem like a drawback, it means PHA gently removes only the surface layer of dead skin cells without penetrating further, making it gentle enough even for people who experience irritation from glycolic acid or salicylic acid. Furthermore, PHA has a remarkable ability to draw in moisture. Typically, after using a peeling product, your skin feels so tight that you immediately want to apply toner. But with PHA, this tightness is minimal—instead, you immediately notice a smooth, dewy texture. Today I'm introducing a product that combines this PHA technology with brightening active ingredients: the Clarifique Brightening Serum from Lancôme's popular Clarifique line. I previously did a deep dive into the lotion from this same series. That product contained a secret ingredient called Buna-no-me extract, which is also included in this new serum. Buna-no-me extract loosens the adhesive bonds between stratum corneum cells to promote turnover, and it also activates enzymes that increase filaggrin, a natural moisturizing factor. This was the ingredient featured in the brightening serum that won Best Cosmetics back in 2020. This new serum contains not only that same Buna-no-me extract, but also PHA and everyone's favorite ingredient, niacinamide. Remarkably, it has received quasi-drug approval for six different efficacies! These include: preventing spots and freckles, providing moisture, smoothing skin texture, preventing acne, balancing sebum, and protecting skin. Having this many approved efficacies is quite rare, and honestly, it surprised me. The texture is also fascinating. When you draw it up with the dropper, it has a watery texture, almost like water itself. When applied, it doesn't feel sticky at all—in fact, it feels rather plump and bouncy. It genuinely feels like moisture is being drawn into the skin, which is a really interesting sensation. The product reportedly contains 10% PHA, which might explain this remarkable moisture-drawing effect. In summary, this serum gently removes surface stratum corneum with PHA while promoting turnover with Buna-no-me extract. At the same time, PHA draws in moisture and Buna-no-me extract boosts filaggrin production, increasing natural moisturizing factors and preventing dryness. On top of that, niacinamide provides brightening and anti-inflammatory benefits. It truly feels like an all-around serum addressing multiple concerns simultaneously.
